RagnarD··on Biology might not be quantum, but its math is quantumlike
So wearying to keep seeing people talk about biology, including the human brain, as though it were guided by Newtonian physics. No. All of the matter and energy in the universe is understood via quantum mechanics. Chemistry would make zero sense without it. "Biology might not be quantum" is therefore just ignorant at best.
RagnarD··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
What was your motivation for that, since Discord is open source?
RagnarD··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Translation: Tim Cook was caught off guard.
RagnarD··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
The former U.S. that was once the freest place on earth.
RagnarD··on Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents
Huh? https://docs.docker.com/desktop/setup/install/windows-instal...

Also, WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) has been baked into Windows for a long time and makes it very easy to play with Linux, as does using the Hyper-V VM system. Any developer unfamiliar with Linux because they use Windows, has little excuse.

RagnarD··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I suggest considering a different domain name before this gets too popular. Rightmove might call it trademark violation for the name being too close, if they get annoyed at the competition.
RagnarD··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I encourage you to turn this into a real sellable product.
RagnarD··on App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours
The most evil (yes) thing about the rejection is that the same stupid wrong misinformation about the app continued to be rubber-stamped as it propagated forward in what should be increasing levels of actual scrutiny and attention. They are lying to call it a review - it's mindless rubber-stamping either by design or because Apple employs people who just can't be bothered to do their jobs.
RagnarD··on An all-sky map of half a million supermassive black holes
I tend to assume that the obvious gridded point pattern is a sky sampling artifact - but it would be far more interesting if it's a real thing.
RagnarD··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
They arrested Mr. Buttle rather than Tuttle.
RagnarD··on Guy took Jupiter photo with Game Boy Camera, giant telescope, publishes tutorial
Would have been far more interesting to have an iPhone adapter, another very common device but with a worthwhile image sensor better justifying time on a massive telescope.
RagnarD··on GPT-5.6
Annoyingly, the new ChatGPT app which folds in Codex, no longer recognizes Shift-Tab to toggle plan mode. Irritatingly you have to enter /plan. OpenAI, fix this!
RagnarD··on 8086 Segmented Memory was a good idea
Yes, mental typo. 256KB.
RagnarD··on 8086 Segmented Memory was a good idea
Oops! 256KB, not 256MB. Sorry about that. It was on a dedicated image capture board plugged into the PC.
RagnarD··on 8086 Segmented Memory was a good idea
I had to use it to do image processing on a 256MB image buffer back in the 1980s in assembly language. It was absolutely hideous. Give me a flat 32 bit memory address space any day (e.g. MC68000 around the same time.)
RagnarD··on The notebooks Marie Curie filled with her research are still dangerous to touch
The notebooks should be scanned in color high resolution and then made available online. No need for close proximity after that.
RagnarD··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
I've had pretty good experiences with GTHost: https://gthost.com/
RagnarD··on How to earn a billion dollars
Those criticizing those earning billions of dollars think of money as some anonymous fixed pie that magically belongs to everyone. On that completely false view of production (and money), of course it would be offensive for people to grab so much for themselves.

If that's what production was about, humanity never would have left caves.

The ancestors of the fix-pie idea were the ones who would have sneered at the first hut built outside of a cave, at the first crops deliberately sown into the ground, at the first villages built up to provide better living conditions for groups of people including as a trade center.

Everything from 100,000 years ago to today is the result of productive human beings who made more of the world. It's an ongoing process.

RagnarD··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
$275 to restore a long-held childhood dream is cheap, I hope your husband wouldn't complain about that.
RagnarD··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
"... new policies like universal basic income."

Is the engine honest enough to reality to demonstrate failure?

RagnarD··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
The analogy I make is between airplanes and birds.

Birds are alive, are conscious, flap their wings, and fly. Planes are not alive, are not conscious, do not flap their wings - and fly.

Similarly, current AIs are not alive, are not conscious - but think.

All prior entities that thought, were human, so the only experience humans had with other thinking entities were other humans. The huge mistake now being made is assuming that because they think, they're alive and conscious as well. Current AIs are neither, and are therefore profoundly and qualitatively different than humans - even though they do think.

RagnarD··on Adafruit receives demand letter from Fenwick legal counsel on behalf of Flux.ai
Looks like Flux.ai got some publicity out of this. Maybe not the kind they wanted - after reading this thread, I'll sure never give them a dime.
RagnarD··on Microsoft builds MacBook Pro rival with NVIDIA-powered Surface Laptop Ultra
It feels hard to be excited by a DGX Spark stuffed into a laptop. It's still slow RAM (much slower than a Mac) and arbitrarily limited to 128GB. Can't they at least offer a higher end model with faster RAM and more of it? Sure it would cost a bundle, but there are still people who'd buy it for the local AI capability.
RagnarD··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
I hope somebody follows up to ensure that the kid isn't being punished for a completely unpredictable event involving a commercial device.
RagnarD··on The Eternal Sloptember
I think the irony is that the perception of being called a tool as an insult, is exactly your meaning of it.
RagnarD··on Enough with the AI FOMO, go slow-mo, says Domo CDO
Doh.
RagnarD··on NASA still maintains some of the Voyager spacecraft code from the 70s era
It's mind boggling that they didn't digitize every last scrap of paper around the project years ago, for starters.
RagnarD··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Really glad to see someone asking this question. After building a fairly significant AI tool using Python tools, I really wish AI/ML tools would all be rewritten to use an actually performant language - say, Rust - without transitive dependency hell on all the package versions.
RagnarD··on 1966 Ford Mustang Converted into a Tesla with Working 'Full Self-Driving'
Well, when there's a software created accident, possibly horrendous, I'm sure Tesla will be relieved that it's one case where they can point to it being a completely unauthorized system for which they reject responsibility.
