RCitronsBroker··on Intel's Humbling
i honestly don’t see what you are seeing in terms of taiwans future sovereignty. Of course, China would like to do something about Taiwan, especially now with their economy kind of in the dumps and a collapsing real estate bubble. But when you look at the facts of it all, there’s absolut ZERO chance chine can muster up what it takes to hold their own in such a conflict. Their military isn’t up to snuff and they are one broken dam away from a huge mass casualty event.

RCitronsBroker··on Reddit seeks to launch IPO in March
this is not a great time to IPO at all. At all.

Additionally, Reddit equity is a seedy investment in the very best of market enviroments. Reddits content AND audience is the antithesis of what makes a user base valuable for advertisers. Piracy, NSFW, tech-savy enough to block ads, notoriously stingy etc. pp. Its user base also has a long history of revolting against any sort of attempt to change this set of facts.

Reddit sharply declined in quality over the past years. the neverending attempts to change its nature, in an attempt of ad-friendly sanitation; executed with unrivalled heavy-handedness, nipped any chance of revival in the bud. This is in addition to the feefdom-ness of moderators and a long history of mismanagement by spez himself. Sometimes mismanagement as in censorship. I finally gave up on making myself miserable with Reddit and its echochambers on a daily basis after they priced their APIs to death. That is one stupid decision on a long list of similarly misguided attempts at trying to sweeten the rancid Reddit equity deal.

ain’t it crazy? I’ll be the first to admit i don’t get furry stuff, but i also don’t get just about a universe of other stuff people are seemingly very much into, and neither do i expect everyone to understand why i willingly risk my life skydiving just because it gives me joy. this is cyberspace for gods sake, have some self respect and stop being dicks to others to virtue signal, that’s just downright mean man
RCitronsBroker··on Thorium – The first browser to score over 600 speedometer points on a Mac M3 Pro
really? is it? this entire outrage felt petty, malicious and nitpicky to me from the get go. is it really that big of a deal? if minors are deep enough into tech to play around with an open source chromium fork, they have been exposed to far, far more and probably darker stuff than raunchy, anthropomorphized bunnies or whatever. this is someone’s pet project, probably someone rather young themselves. it entirely possible you even found use in this someone’s pet project. And now you’re coming after them because of a cringy Easter egg? That’s just f*ckin mean
RCitronsBroker··on Power over fiber
I have several lasers in that category somewhere in the depths of the electronics stuff i accumulated from hoarding and reselling it for years, including a surplus fiber laser i auctioned myself into owning. They can certainly start fires under the right conditions, but that requires the fiber end to be polished VERY well, otherwise, the beam isn’t focused enough to deliver the needed energy, bundled up on one spot. Still way enough to make you blind before you notice tho, nothing to skimp on in any case.

to be entirely honest, even that is beyond the point. Parachutes are dead simple things, pretty much all constructed from the same ZP ripstop nylon and built the same way.

Sure, there is a whole bunch of subcategories and outliers, but it’s all very mature technology if you aren’t pushing boundaries with things like full sail fabrics intended for paragliding wings, ultra fast and small cross braced speed machines and such. I’m not innovating here, i use the same designs, fabrics and processes, even the same sewing machines.

I also skydive with a commercial reserve parachute and a tertiary belly mounted emergency rig for good measure. The secondary reserve is rigged into a so called "automatic activation device" [1]. The chances of murking myself due to negligence, complacency or by pushing my luck with disciplines like relative work (flying formations) or free flying (acro) are wayyy higher than a fatal accident because one of three parachutes malfunctioned. Skydiving is a deadly sport, it says so on the waiver you have to sign, and if i don’t feel comfortable with the inherent risks, I’ll gift my gear to a newbie and call it quits.

[1] AAD - device monitoring velocity and altitude, fires a cutting charge, severing the reserve closing loop if still in free fall at set altitude. I use this one

I manage lol, being circumcised had a much worse impact on my gait for considerable time, oh, and i got my median sized nuts crushed by my leg straps once after deploying my parachute, that sucked
RCitronsBroker··on The surprising genius of sewing machines [video]
why not? I have a burning passion for aerial sports, i have various sports skydiving licenses and BASE jumped for a while, so i am somewhat experienced in piloting different ram air canopy type wings. I also have a parachute rigging license and I’ve repaired and serviced parachutes for some time now.

Additionally, i also have designed a variety of mods and paraphernalia, including DLC coated closing loop pins - friction has foiled attempts to deploy reserve parachutes in the past, as well as a self-designed, modded slider to be retrofitted onto a model produced by performance designs parachutes.

The reason for the slider mod? The oem one is too small to slow down the deployment sequence, breaking the bones of unsuspecting parachutists. They are far from perfect in many cases and have never been sued for it.

Here’s another scary case in point if you’re interested in going down that rabbit hole. But I’m getting off track, I’m just having fun and I’m aware of the risks I’m taking by pursuing this. You’re risking your life on potentially badly designed gear either way, i just only have myself to blame lol

same here. I got it in the process of sewing my own skydiving parachute, still working on that.

RCitronsBroker··on Two pharmacists figured out that oral phenylephrine doesn't work
fellow german and medical student here. the reason is twofold. The first part is pretty obvious, it’s a great way to make money for pharmacists and physicians, it’s pretty much unregulated, has huge margins and is often paid by the patient instead of the gesetzliche Krankenkassen.

The second part, why they are getting away with it, is that naturalistic and pseudoscientific healing BS has a long, long history in Germany. Schulmedizin, at least somewhat, had the image of being perverted by Jewish influences. "Völkische Medizin" the OG Heilpraktiker in some sense, started most of the Quack stuff you see today. The same circles are also still infested with nationalist and anti-jewish sentiments á la "the globalists" to this very day. It’s a crazy, crazy world if you take a closer look.

yeah, i think they are pretty standard for demo work around the world afaik. Very interesting, Germany tends to be hellishly strict on building codes and such, but PPE is seriously lacking over here. It bred the mother of all toxic cavalier attitudes.
RCitronsBroker··on Australia to ban engineered stone
just saying, Germany enforces speeding laws DAMN strict. We have radar cameras ("Blitzer") and random police patrols with handheld or mobile equipment.

The only thing different here is that we don’t have a general speed limit, if sections of the autobahn meet the safety requirements, they can be marked unrestricted. You can drive as fast as you want there, but the majority of sections are limited to 130km/h due to steep(ish) curves, visibility, traffic and noise pollution guidelines.

That said, we do love our Autobahn and there ARE quite a few unrestricted sections left, my favorite is the A30. All open, starting at the NL border up until Osnabrück.

RCitronsBroker··on Stealthy Linux rootkit found in the wild after going undetected for 2 years
oh yes, it does. Good catch. False-Flagging your actions as commercially motivated doesn’t strike me as a hard to construct alibi, either. Certainly not beyond the scope of sophisticated, state aligned actors, except maybe the north-Koreans, that guardians of peace Spiel was entertaining tho.

This awakens memories of GCHQ attacks on Belgian(?) telecom providers; they really are inherent gold mines for dragnet surveillance, stealing database, offensive cyberattacks and probably lots more. There’s a reason Huawei is subsidized for offering cheap 5g infrastructure to international clients, it’s a real nice thing to have backdoors to. Not saying the west is much better in this regard, Cisco has been more than compliant in similar shenanigans just to name one.

RCitronsBroker··on Apple to move key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam
i feel like this is largely motivated by growing qualms over being highly dependent on China. They are not alone by far, but Apple truly is an extraordinary case of being enitrely at the mercy of china playing their role. COVID was the event that lowered the tide enough to, painfully so, expose whos swimming naked. Now, add growing concerns over IP protection plus political volatility, and you have a situation that makes shareholders and executives queasy when rethinking their current position. China also isnt as cheap as it used to be, has economic troubles and faces an impending population collapse. Thats one hell of an uncertain future, soon-to-be superpowers dont tend to suddenly stop providing key metrics regarding their population and economy. Lets see how they handle their own personal 2008, Evergrande aint lookin too good either.

one case that consoles me is that harry markopolous, the quant who blew the whistle on madoff and his feeder funds-of-funds, despite rigorously not being listened to and almost being railroaded by an SEC coverup, at least got some sort of payout for his pain and suffering that went on for years. I cannot recommend his book enough.
RCitronsBroker··on New legislation proposes to take Wall Street out of the housing market
This is a paper tiger. just by banning "Hedgefonds" (misnomer of the decade by the way, they do anything but hedge these days), or, more precisely investment funds structured as limited partnerships, from owning residential real estate you do absolutely NOTHING to mitigate what happened in 2008.

hedge funds are just an easily hated scapegoat, because they ARE insufferable in many cases, but they are not at fault here.

The real problem is the moral hazard that is growing exponentially with every increase in distance between the ones dishing out the money and the ones who are liable. If you can repackage mortgages into more and more complex derivatives you can sell to other people, and you also figure out a way to game rating agencies into a triple A rating by misleading them with thin-file FICO scores and faux diversification, you can profit from deadbeat customers and make someone else the bag holder at the same time. That’s the archetypal moral hazard.

The institutional clients don’t understand that correlation increases with volatility, they are consoled by the ratings and don’t realize they are part of a time bomb, waiting to drag the whole economy down with it.
