that reminds me of re-flashing a modded BIOS on my x230 thinkpad to remove their stupid battery and expansion card lock. Spent hours on semi-Russian speaking message boards and fiddling with Pomona clips to get that one working.
RCitronsBroker··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
have you actually read the EPA report? This has never been proven, the issues they found are more on the level of procedural scrutiny and unmarked waste buckets. That’s FAR from "releasing toxic chemicals into a residential neighborhood", which it isn’t, it’s industrial zoned land. The one apartment building is also literally built on a EPA superfund site, entirely unrelated to Apple. So even if the issues reported aren’t hypochondria or part of the myriad of other vendettas this woman had with Apple, it’s still just as likely that it may have something to do with the superfund site.

Personally, I’d prefer living next to a low vol semi lab to a whole myriad of other enterprises: petrochem, industrial scale chemistry, coal powerplants, GA airports using 100LL avgas, the list goes on. But hey, that’s just like my opinion man.

this isn’t a residential neighborhood, this is industrial zoning with ONE apartment building that got an exception. Probably due to the generally horrible housing situation over there. Nonetheless, it’s actually not that uncommon to find semiconductor labs in suburban areas, mostly low vol or R&D of course, but it’s far from unheard of.

things take longer to repair than to crush. There have been countless waves of anyone with the ability and means to leave leaving, the drug trade is engrained in a way it was, undeniably so, not before the Soviet invasion. The mismanagement and purposeful acceptance of disastrous consequences for Afghanistan did not end with the funding of the mujahedeen. It continued up to, and including, the US pull out. Which is by no means a long time ago. Leaving behind unthinkable amounts of arms in a situation as explosive as left behind isn’t much better in terms of stability.

Instead of talking about what ifs, why don’t you have a look at what has been. Pre-Soviet Afghanistan is truely worlds apart from anything you’d now connect with living in Afghanistan. If you so desperately want the afghans to be at fault for their demise, how did that happen?

Close relatives of mine try to reform and expand Kandahar university clinic and med school, they all have built a comfortable living abroad, they owe that to no one. Of course, there are more than enough elements in Afghanistan that have contributed to their collective fate, profited and now hinder progress. I’m not here to defend them, i despise them. But that’s nothing different to any other country, they just have wayyy more destruction and suffering to foster and grow. Germany just needed a few decades of, in comparison laughable, economic mismanagement, for new politicians talking about gas chambers[0] to emerge. Let’s not act like that’s a uniquely afghan reaction to misery of any sort. Still horrible from all perspectives, no denying that.

the outcomes of that branch were much better and worlds more secular before the country was invaded twice. Matter of fact, by that measure, how does a branch that just got over their eugenic fantasies[0] talking about "poisoned branches" fare?

I’ll refrain from judging your viewpoint, but I don’t think it’s controversial to interpret this as trying to judge cultures objectively, no? That inherently includes a lot of trust in one’s viewpoint and knowledge to judge off of. Just the snippet you posted here does not inspire a lot of confidence.

Being unable to discern between the product of a society and the situation after an exogenous power funded and armed the outer most fringe of deplorable religious extremism, under the delusion they would be fighting the commies and noone else, is not the good look you think it is.

But hey, I’m sure you regard your own opinion as something valuable and positive, it’s your own after all ;)

this feels like a mistype. if it’s not, unfortunately there isn’t much afghan culture left at this point, at least the lovely parts. blown to bits and driven into diaspora, infested with the drug trade and extremism to cope with the state of their country and lives. we still love to be hosts and cook for people tho, so there’s that. My heart still aches for a future where at least the poppies are of the pharmaceutical thebaine-kind. Things are downright horrible atm.

I wholeheartedly agree. Thank you for caring. Sincerely, an afghan.
RCitronsBroker··on The case for not sanitising fairy tales
that is something most parents can only ever dream of providing for their child. I don’t mean that in a demeaning way, that's something hugely desirable and probably positive in terms of development. But it’s sort of unattainable for a whole lot of people.

I'm afghan, so i can only talk about the caliber of US-cooperating, calling them anti taliban is a distinct misnomer, afghans I’ve met, and they are quite literally some of the very worst and amoral people I’ve ever met. They aren’t motivated by moral objections towards Islamic extremism, they have found a big daddy to lend them authority and maybe solves a few unrelated vendettas for them. Most concerning opium and warlordism. Let’s also not forget where the taliban got their supplies from. …and the fact that the sudden US retreat, and especially backtracking on guarantees of citizenship, killed more pro-US afghans than assange ever could have. People don’t hold onto a departing planes landing gear for nothing, that’s something you do with your back against the wall. Kandahar skydiving club it jokingly was called by US troops, how about yall don’t feign sympathy.
RCitronsBroker··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
Nothing in the report is actually of gravity. If that’s really the extent of mismanagement, it’s pretty tame for a R&D semiconductor lab.

RCitronsBroker··on Metabolism of autism reveals developmental origins
as someone who’s also autism adjacent and content with it, let’s still recognize that it’s not called spectrum for nothing. Yes, one’s norm of "functioning" can be more dependent on society than you’re own opinion, but I’ve witnessed several individuals on the "lower functioning" end of the spectrum who really didn’t seem like they were content with the way they’re living life. I’m not infallible, but it definitely seemed that way.

RCitronsBroker··on Insatiable: A life without eating
This is what pulled me out of an eating disorder as a teen. Got diagnosed with Crohn’s, also was put onto a mush-diet for almost half a year, and got so pissed over that timespan, that the primal joy of eating just straight up overpowered any sort of disordered obsessiveness i was fighting with before. Life is so damn strange.
RCitronsBroker··on Chemists Invent Drugs and Drugs Save Lives
that hits close to home. I had a search warrant executed on me after ordering small amounts of very ordinary lab chemicals that MAY be used for some more nefarious purposes as a Teen.

It’s what pretty much killed my passion for chemistry, i was admitted to undergraduate chemistry instead of my remaining years of high school thru a program offered here in Germany and stopped after my parents, somewhat pre-disposed to such things due to being afghan immigrants during the war on terror, ceased supporting me in my pursuits. I’m working on my biochemistry dissertation now, but "only" to get my German MD-ish (Dr. med.) and still regret it sometimes.

RCitronsBroker··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
you are absolutely right, that’s exactly my point in favor of Spotify being dishonest here. They are just looking for reasons to buy for less and sell for more, thats it.
RCitronsBroker··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
that’s BS and in no way solving their very real bot problem. This wasn’t reported on worldwide, but here in Germany, it got some press due to local hip-hop labels being involved.

Malicious labels use click farms to push up the numbers on their artists, either by manipulating all platforms or locking their artist into Spotify.

This, in addition to other forms of manipulation such as playlists-aaS, isn’t just a ploy to promote their music. As long as farming clicks is cheaper that the payout rate, they can get paid for laundering illicit gains that way.
