Quiza12··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
One additional benefit (or at least an unproven, theoretical benefit): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdbJJ8UhM1I
Quiza12··on Satellite Tracker – Live Map of Starlink and 30k Satellites
Seeing them "slowly" move (but in reality incredibly quickly) reminds me of reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_(novel)
Quiza12··on How to read more books
Street Libraries are the best! +1 from Aus
Quiza12··on What is Bending Spoons? The little-known AOL and Vimeo owner that's now public
Same - what's funny is that if they'd lifted prices 20-30% I might have stayed, but they went with the big bang of 85%.
Quiza12··on Setting Up a New Windows Laptop in 2026
Like many IT-inclined folk, I was recently tasked with setting up two new laptops for my father and brother, who run a mortgage broking business. Bog-standard Office 365 apps, OneDrive, Chrome over Edge, Outlook set up and all that. Given all the commentary I've read about the decline in quality of Windows, I was interested to see how frustrating the set up would be and how much bloatware and unasked-for installs were weighing it down.

Bit of fun too because it coincided with Australia's first World Cup game!

Quiza12··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
I agree. I'm in Sydney and certainly the next phase of development going through my suburb is duplexes. Suddenly you've doubled the amount of cars on the same block, and the garage is 50/50 used for one of the cars or not.
Quiza12··on Out of Office//Pass the Parcel
The fate of all emails in and around Christmastime.

Quiza12··on Show HN: Onlyrecipe 2.0 – I added all features HN requested – 4 years later
Hahaha - I made my own website to mock these ones: https://matthewquerzoli.com/#/projects/internet-recipe
Quiza12··on Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI?
Not forced yet, but we have a lower risk appetite than your average firm. If it is used, instructions are clear that the output should not be treated as gospel and verse. Haven't heard of any major issues as a result of unfiltered, unreviewed AI dumps (yet).
Quiza12··on Making the video that made Gorillaz
Aside from the numerous So Fresh instalments, Demon Days might have been the first CD my brothers and I played to death. Timeless.
Quiza12··on You don't have to pay the Microsoft 365 price increase
Same tactic for the Evernote increase. Finally dumped it for Joplin and haven't looked back.
Quiza12··on More than 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023–more than any year on record
"Suicide's for cowards he said

While sat drinking himself to death"

Quiza12··on How to write a novel using the snowflake method (2013)
You are correct - John Irving writes his endings first.

https://www.backwordsblog.com/single-post/2016/04/27/john-ir...

"People have commented – sometimes with irritation, sometimes nicely – on the amount of foreshadow that there is in my novel. Well, yeah, it’s not that hard to foreshadow what’s coming when you know what’s coming…I write endings first. I write last sentences – sometimes last paragraphs – first. I know where I am going. I write collision course stories."

Quiza12··on The Password Game
This is great! I built a very similar thing a while ago - https://www.funnypasswordchecker.com/ Definitely not in the same league but it was a lot of fun!
Quiza12··on I measured the pollution from my gas stove
Agree with it all. Although I'll add that I miss charring vegies over the naked flame, as well.
Quiza12··on Pig War (1859)
Reminded me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_War
Quiza12··on I put my whole life into a single database
Very cool! Love you work.
Quiza12··on Ask HN: What is your favorite piece of entertainment of the last three years?
Absolutely agree with The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. Re-read it a few times now.
Quiza12··on Medium is not the home for your ideas
That's me in a nutshell. I've built a regular audience for my writing over the years. As the author suggests though, it might be a good idea to have a mirror.
Quiza12··on 'Doomscrolling' breeds anxiety – how to stop the cycle
This is a big one for me. Not so much the bringing the phone into the room to scroll through before bed, but working from home physically leaving it in another room so I can't instinctively reach for it and be distracted by it.
Quiza12··on Ask HN: How is your mental health?
I second the writing. Having it on page, whatever the worry/worries, makes it tangible in a way that can be "solved."
Quiza12··on Apple Music Web Client
About time!
Quiza12··on Cobol Still Powers the Global Economy
No extra onion sauce for you!
Quiza12··on Ask HN: Recommend one book I need to read this summer?
The World According to Garp by John Irving. To me, it's the perfect tragi-comedy. Gotta have a bit of both.
Quiza12··on A History of Singapore in 10 Dishes
I never thought I'd see the day where Chinese Noodle House gets a run on Hacker News (albeit in a comment). But can definitely second this for dumplings - my favourite place to go after uni.
Quiza12··on Medium is a poor choice for blogging
Ditto. Absolutely dreadful. It's like they sort of tacked it on without much thought of how to do it.
Quiza12··on Leonardo Da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3M, Shattering Auction Records
It will look good on the wall of a safe.
