Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Will chatbots trigger a AI winter?
I think OP meant AGI, defined as

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to the hypothetical intelligence of a machine that possesses the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can. It is a type of artificial intelligence that aims to mimic the cognitive abilities of the human brain

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: How to deal with overly-confident-sounding team members
Also if you do these things and get no where, talk about it with your manager in your 1:1, cause that sort of behavior really reduces a teams effectiveness, youre all working together so if you have concerns they’re not your own vendetta, they’re a desire for your team to be more effective and to improve work satisfaction
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: How to deal with overly-confident-sounding team members
I usually try to say things like “that sounds like a promising idea, there’s something I’m confused about though”. Or “I really like your insights on this, one thing I have a knowledge gap on though is…”

Basically if someone has an ego, make them feel like you’re not saying they’re wrong and you’re hoping they can teach you, and through that slowly guide them to the points they’re wrong about. If you get to the topic, like say they argue AWS EMR is cheaper than a lambda for doing some small simple process (insanely dumb idea) and you mention that you’d thought lambda pricing was cheaper and they say “no it’s not” to shut you up or stop the debate, I’d recommend having a small 1 point research spike to get pricing differentials just to make sure, since it’s small effort and it can help with cost estimates in the future either way.

Basically avoid saying they’re wrong, treat everything like a knowledge gap, and an opportunity to explore something to build team knowledge

Quixotica1··on 200 Chemicals Linked to Breast Cancer Found in Food Packaging
it’s so frustrating trying to find ways to be healthy. It’s easy to end up feeling powerless against all of this. Even high end health food stores likely use these packaging materials
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: HN comments changed from majority libertarian to majority socialist?
That is hilarious and makes my day, thanks! There is something that’s both humbling to know I am so unoriginal that I would think something so common it was included in the rules (which I obviously never read, my bad!) and flattering that I would converge on a thought that must be incredibly common after seeing behavior on here that would make me unprompted remember Reddit. I won’t mention it again and I’ll take the title of noob for having thought it :D have a great day and thanks for sharing!

(I hope this all comes off as sincere because that’s my intention, I appreciate your replies!)

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: HN comments changed from majority libertarian to majority socialist?
A better way of looking at it might be that comments became Reddit.

Sadly I just think this is what happens to anything good the larger the user base gets, but maybe I’m jaded

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Starting a masters in AI, what should I read to stay up to date?
Congrats on graduating! I will check out that thread, appreciate the guidance!
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Starting a masters in AI, what should I read to stay up to date?
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it and I’m going to do this now
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: How to tell if a job candidate is using a LLM to cheat on a coding test?
This is someone you’re going to be working with every day, if it seems like they are very difficult to work with, don’t take direction, aren’t willing to cooperate with a team, and they do things that seem suspicious, I think it’s fine to pass on the offer and maybe provide feedback to them so that they understand how they can perform better in the future. Whether or not a person solves some hacker rank problem isn’t really the determining factor on whether or not they pass a coding interview IMO

Quixotica1··on Japan begins releasing Fukushima wastewater into Pacific ocean
> Nuclear power plants worldwide have routinely discharged water containing tritium for over 60 years without harm to people or the environment, most at higher levels than planned for Fukushima,” Tony Irwin, an honorary associate professor at the Australian National University, said.

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: How do you stop letting your work performance affect your overall mood?
Sounds corny but this book has a lot of practical advice on how to process emotions and build healthy habits. It’s written by a psychologist and it’s a lot of CBT with explanations of the stoic origins of the current recommended CBT practices. Helped me out.

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Are you a digital nomad while working full time? how do you do that?
I was working full time for a company for 4 years as a digital nomad, and they knew.

They didn’t care as long as I performed well

Quixotica1··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
I try to exercise 3 days a week and can say it dramatically improves my mental performance as well as my overall disposition. Always find it sad when people are against exercise and at the same time seem like they could really even fit from the emotional psychological boost

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: How to deal with after lunch fatigue?
I skip breakfast and have a lighter lunch with a coffee or tea without sugar. The bitter flavor helps suppress my appetite. I have a big dinner after work everyday and maybe a snack in the evening.

Avoid sugar IMO, I notice when I have a lot of it, I get hungrier sooner and with greater intensity

Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Do I have “imposters syndrome” or am I just bad?
I’m also self taught and two things that helped me are, ok well 3

1. Read clean code 2. Read clean architecture

Or at least find someone summary of the books. They helped me feel more confident in the code I wrote, the way I wrote it, and helped me justify why I wanted to write it the way I did

3. Look up DDD - domain driven design. I think that starting to learn about different architectural methodologies will help to understand bigger projects better. It’ll also help you to see where the projects went wrong, and sometimes that’s reassuring too because it shows even senior and principal devs don’t always really know exactly what they’re doing

This is a good GitHub repo for DDD. Definitely look into others as well, not saying DDD is the answer to all problems or the best for any, but I just like it lol

Quixotica1··on Gen Z never learned to read cursive
I think the push back is really just based around the feeling that by not spending a few hours a week for part of a school year, kids will never be able to read something. So I think in general it’s just a weird feeling like if they decided learning any math after basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division wasn’t necessary and removed it for more relevant topics. It’s easy to argue that long division will never be useful for most people, but it also feels weird deciding what future generations can be ignorant about it
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Do you care about my daily updates?
Agreed. I was working as an engineering manager and found that after we started doing stand ups, the team became more cohesive as a group and people started reaching out to each other for help/advice. It really improved our efficiency, but not because it was necessary to know what everyone did everyday, but because it builds trust to tell people around you what you’re doing and what you’re struggling with
Quixotica1··on Ask HN: Anyone went into CS through an unconventional path?
I was a Math Statistics major.

My first job was in COBOL since I had no programming background and desperately wanted a job after finishing college.

From there I made a few new friends who were actually into coding and I learned PHP and JavaScript by meeting up with them at night after work. Did that for a year and a half or so and then got a freelance job writing JavaScript and Laravel. Did that for a month and a half and burned out (70-80 hour work weeks suck!)

Quit my crappy COBOL job, moved to Japan, got in touch with a recruiter there, thought I would stay but ended up starting a small web dev company with a friend, traveled for a few years, company kind of died, got a job remotely with another company and kept traveling. Still traveling 7 years later. Now doing devops
