QuiDortDine··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
> I don't prefer one state over the other. Both are transitory.

"I don't prefer burning or not burning my hand. Both are transitory."

QuiDortDine··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
> AI text generation has a similar flavor of danger. Imagine a world in which everyone has a personalized better-than-human text-generating AI. People will have no incentive to read anything other than what it writes (why read Shakespeare when you could have Shakespeare-tailored-for-you?) People will have no incentive to broadcast their own words over those of their AI.

This is what I call the "Spotify fallacy", or the "goddamn AI stop trying to seduce me problem". I don't want to know what it thinks I want to hear. I want to hear what others have liked and seen, and music that resembles that, not music that resembles me. In short I want to share an experience, not jerk off intellectually, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. You can't share an experience that's been created just for you.

I'm scared and I hope government intervention will be swift.

But on the artistic side... new tech makes possible new ways to be creative. And there are still acrylic painters even though Photoshop exists. And there are still human races and sports even though machines are faster/stronger. So I'm thinking people already recognize there are different kinds of performers, and by and large people haven't been cheating much that anyone could tell (though ghostwriting and such already exist).

QuiDortDine··on I had ChatGPT write a Decemberists song and recorded it
ChatGPT can't do better than experts in terms of analysis because it doesn't have a theory of mind. In other words, it's not actually thinking "what would experts do", and try to do the same or better. It's normal that it can produce mediocre results, because that's what it does, in a way: It produces "normal-looking" text. I don't know enough to say if it could do better if specialized (?), but I doubt it, as it cannot actually have an original idea, and knowing what is original is part of what makes an expert.

That's a good rule of thumb, but I just don't have time to cook everything from scratch.

Haven't you heard? In startup land you don't need to be profitable as long as you're famous. All you need is investors to keep that runway going. Line goes up!

Is this not... a terrible idea?

Do you really feel like this is a real contribution to the conversation? Agile coaches help stabilize software development, and meditation teachers teach a valuable self-regulation skill. You not wanting or valuing something doesn't make it "snake oil".
