QuiCasseRien··on "Fuck You" Companies
A very refreshing read after a long time.

I like the use of vulgar language, it hits way harder than all the blah-blah bullshit

I've been convinced by the power of "Fuck you" :)

QuiCasseRien··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
nice project very interesting

How do you switch from open source (1) to full time paid job (2) ? I'm curious cause I'm still stuck in (1)

Thank for your feedback

QuiCasseRien··on What Are Traces and Spans in OpenTelemetry?
> Metrics tell you what changed. Logs tell you why something happened. Traces tell you where time was spent and how a request moved across your system.

maybe the first time i read a crystal clear difference between metrics, logs and traces.

nice post.

QuiCasseRien··on Debian GNU/Hurd 2025 released
Is any new operating system is able to emerge nowadays ?

each week there are (in C, in Rust, in JS...)

What are their hardware support ?

at best they can run in a virtual machine

End of debate.

I love when people don't have to talk to explain how the hell they are expert in a domain.

This is a very good example, nice work !

QuiCasseRien··on Stop selling “unlimited”, when you mean “until we change our minds”
unlimited is a marketing word but once it turns to juridical, it sucks.

some say they have to define a huge limit and that's it.

Limits are sometime hard to define :

- they must be such huge, a user (human) finaly understand it's unlimited else he will compare to competitors

- but no such huge because the 0.1% of users will try to reach it

A fair word could be the one which categorize the type of use :

- human : human has physical limit (e.g: typing word to keyboard / per time).

- bot : from 1 arduino to heavyweight hardcore clusting, virtualy no limits.

QuiCasseRien··on Ask HN: Open source projects make money?
being backed by companies which use your product is often the golden ticket to making a living from open source.

think of why someone could pay for something you offer free :

- have some control over you : integrate feature, prioritize you backlog, influence the roadmap...

- have confidence that the project will be maintained and won’t be abandoned

- direct support from the maintainer

- visibility/marketing

- ...

- i'm scripting at best the full setup of my servers (mostly Nixos and some debian).

- daily backup locale + remote (blackbaze with 60 readonly retention strategy, separated bucket by service)

- monthly offline backup

- a preprod server where my users can restore entiere environment for testing purpose (CI)

in case of full house fire, i can be back online in an working day.

PS: i have only some TBs of data so quite easy to do.

QuiCasseRien··on The principles of database design, or, the Truth is out there
> A relation should be identified by a natural key that reflects the entity’s essential, domain-defined identity — not by arbitrary or surrogate values.

That's a very nice example of Theory VS Practice !

I agree, in Theory, PK should be identified by the natural unique key identifier of the domain. Your example with national_id is proper.

In practice :

- due to their varying underlying type, manipulating natural key identifier throught an application (passing values) is not always easy. UUID or INT are reliable and always works.

- sometimes, we want a "poor" anonymization when passing and calculting data. As the PK is the identifier of the tuple, having a personal data for PK can be problematic.

- last but not least : using PK that is subject to change is a terrible idea. An address mail, for example, anybody can be subject to change. When it's the PK, you are fuck to do or propagate the change.

And in this age of gods war, Practice always win.

QuiCasseRien··on Observability 2.0 and the Database for It
both.

It's opensource, there is a full feature docker-compose to host on your own. Or you can use their hosting service, highly available and with good prices.

30$/monthly for our 380Go + 30k timeseries. Perfect.

QuiCasseRien··on Hyper – Outperform React on every metric
Well,

I'm waiting for more real world production examples and not just the todo-list hello world.

I like the simpler/cleaner approach of Nue. Now one of the big difference will be the component and theming provided.

I'm a long term vue/vuetify user and i can build powerful and sexy web app in a small amount of time and effort.

I will definetely compare this point.

That's said, you've done an incredible work with your Nue project. i keep a eye on it.

QuiCasseRien··on Hyper – Outperform React on every metric
https://nuejs.org/blog/introducing-hyper/simple-table.html

With vuejs, the template code is very identical to your hyper version.

React is full bullshit mixing (JSX) code.

So what's about comparing to a cleaner code and separation like the vuejs.

QuiCasseRien··on Observability 2.0 and the Database for It
I discover it 2 years ago, it's open source and i currently use the SaaS offer : 30$ for 300Go and 30k timeseries.

The underlying database is clickhouse, quite all charts/tables are shown incredibly fast whereas 180Go are traces/logs/metrics in a 6 weeks rolling

I like the UI and how you can create or copy, everything is yaml based.

Contrary to grafana, the user experience is simple and it also proposes templates for most used metrics (host, service...)

It's one of the few to handle the three pillars (trace, log, metric) in the same product.

Monitor and alert are well design and easy to set up.

Try it and adopt it.

I am absolutely not related to uptrace, but their product solve a great issue for me.

It's my secondary daily critical tool, just after onedev (onedev.io) for dev.

QuiCasseRien··on Observability 2.0 and the Database for It
just one word : uptrace, https://uptrace.dev/

a very satisfied user : trace, metrics, log in a perfect way
