PunchTornado··on Titans: Learning to Memorize at Test Time
If this was that good, why would Google release it?
PunchTornado··on The Aging Programmer [video]
Good luck. Hope your sight will hold until they discover a cure.
PunchTornado··on My Favorite Book on AI
this is from Mustafa Suleyman, don't bother opening the link.

If people don't know him, he is the classic impostor who just goes by contributing nothing to the field, but investing big in pr and bots.

PunchTornado··on Can LLMs write better code if you keep asking them to “write better code”?
tell this to half the devs out there who view this as clean code because uncle bob says so.
PunchTornado··on 30% drop in O1-preview accuracy when Putnam problems are slightly variated
isn't it weird that they didn't test gemini?
PunchTornado··on Journal that published faulty black plastic study removed from science index
I reviewed articles and never verified their calculations because it is not part of what a reviewer should do. A reviewer should never try and replicate the experiment or crunch numbers. It should look at the methodology, background, significance, possible enhancements etc.
PunchTornado··on Ideas from "A Philosophy of Software Design"
I view that some of his principles are against what uncle Bob is preaching. And I agree with him, especially on the focus to reduce complexity. Uncle Bob preaches modularity and encapsulation over everything and you end up with a thousand 2 liners classes and methods.
PunchTornado··on Guide for the perplexed – Google is no longer the best search engine
Certainly seems like it. I hope the mods remove it
PunchTornado··on Maximum likelihood estimation and loss functions
I took stats courses and didn’t see that notation before. And yes, looks cryptic.
PunchTornado··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
His electoral campaign posts weren’t marked as electoral material. As a voter I thought they are not paid but true opinions of journalists/ influencers that I respect. It turns out that they were actually paid and not marked properly. So he broke the rules. Now I am going to change my vote.
PunchTornado··on ‘With brain preservation, nobody has to die’
I view death as the saviour of democracy and the most democratic aspect of life.

Without death, our fragile democracies will die. Tyrants will be in power forever.

PunchTornado··on DynaSaur: Large Language Agents Beyond Predefined Actions
I agree. And I view it as intellectual imposture. Instead of saying something really simple which can give good results, you obfuscate it a lot to make it sound more intelligent. Reviewers shouldn't accept these kind of papers and I'm thinking that we need a Sokal moment in AI research.
PunchTornado··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
they can be bought by another company, other investors, for a different price.
PunchTornado··on Trump wins presidency for second time
if Biden will sign a decree to welcome everyone and every migrant would be legal, people still won't like it. people want to reduce immigration, legal or illegal.
PunchTornado··on Trump wins presidency for second time
the message is: we don't want immigrants, we don't want to help other countries at our short term cost (even if it is a long term gain for us). like it or not, this is what people want.
PunchTornado··on Microsoft said it lost weeks of security logs for its customers' cloud products
There were comments here about how msft is more enterprise friendly than google because they don't lose any data. msft is the opposite of reliable.
PunchTornado··on The AI Investment Boom
if you were to invest in datacenter stocks (AI datacenters builders), what companies would be good options?
PunchTornado··on 200GB Free Cloud for Your Files
"may" is that English word that non-natives learn too late that it actually means "will".

I remember when I first moved to England and my boss told me I may work on x and I thought that it is optional so I did something else.

PunchTornado··on Were RNNs all we needed?
To me this is further evidence that these LLMs learn only to speak English, but there is no reasoning at all in them. If you simplify a lot and obtain the same results and we know how complex the brain is.
PunchTornado··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
would a python developer with javascript and reactjs qualify?
PunchTornado··on Data Science Agent and Code Transformation
looks great, but it is only available in usa.
PunchTornado··on It is hard to recommend Google Cloud
I guess people will rant about any cloud provider the same way. The tech needs to mature. Wait till someone starts an azure thread, God I wish i never have to touch azure anymore in my life.
PunchTornado··on SpaceX Pulls Employees from Brazil, Discourages Travel There
the judge can be wrong or not, but Musk is so hated at this point, that anything done against him will be welcomed by the masses.

my mind almost works like this now: Musk said something? the opposite must be true then.

And it's Musk's fault for this hatred.

PunchTornado··on What Life Means to Einstein (1929) [pdf]
I am surprised to find out that Einstein was so convinced in the non-existence of free will.

> I claim credit for nothing. Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible player.

Meanwhile, I believe, that you can also be a determinist and believe in free will.

PunchTornado··on Diffusion models are real-time game engines
Interesting talk about the brain, but the stuff she says about free will is not a very good argument. Basically it is sort of the argument that the ancient greeks made which brings the discussion into a point where you can take both directions.
PunchTornado··on Waymo now serves over 100k paid trips per week
I work in map annotation for waymo for europe and a lot of work is coming lately. they pay good bonuses for overtime. I suspect this is just the beginning of the scaling process.
PunchTornado··on Ask HN: How are you finding the job market in July 2024?
uk -> deadish
PunchTornado··on Overleaf: An open-source online real-time collaborative LaTeX editor
last time I remember I spent 1h trying to install latex on my mac, then decided to use overleaf.
PunchTornado··on Zuckerberg disses closed-source AI competitors as trying to 'create God'
just putting weights on hug is not enough for a model to be open. it is like sharing the binaries of a software.

they should put their entire code on github and show how it was trained, architecture and everything else.

also, the most important thing about a model is not it's architecture, but the dataset it was trained on. that is the "it" in a model.

PunchTornado··on We went solar and here are the real numbers (2021)
I don't get it either. Maybe they are training LLMs. We're a family of 4 and we use ~90kWh per month.

No difference winter/summer because we have gas heating. Maybe that's where the difference goes.
