PufPufPuf··on The Egg (By Andy Weir)
18 years ago you wrote an essay which shares the general premise with this short story: https://charmonium.com/infinite-reincarnation/

What exactly do you mean by "plagiarizing" here? Sharing the basic idea?

PufPufPuf··on OpenAI adds MCP support to Agents SDK
Since I've worked with the official MCP SDK, I find this analogy quite accurate
PufPufPuf··on Gemma3 Function Calling
MCP is the wire protocol, it doesn't say anything about how the LLM output is structured and parsed.
PufPufPuf··on Devs say AI crawlers dominate traffic, forcing blocks on entire countries
In a "denial of service prevention" scenario, you need your cost to be lower than the cost of the attacker. "Delay on the server side" means keeping a TCP connection open for that long, and that's a limited resource.
PufPufPuf··on 4o Image Generation
Can it be tried? ChatGPT still uses DALL-E for me.
PufPufPuf··on Windows 11 updates are accidentally getting rid of Copilot
I am using macOS for about a year now and wow, almost any OS update breaks something. That was supposed to be a Windows thing, according to the memes, but here I go again convincing Apple that my USB network card does indeed still exist.
PufPufPuf··on A look at Firefox forks
Actually, some of the Zen features are lesser-known native features of Firefox: including the collapsible vertical tabs.
PufPufPuf··on Six mistakes I made in my dioramas-and-felt Steam game and one I didn't
Some games on Steam are truly "DRM-free", but the default way is to use the Steamworks DLL which tries to open the game through Steam if the exe was clicked directly. This "DRM" is trivial to remove with the right tools (if not accompanied by a real DRM), but still you'd be basically cracking the games you bought.

GOG (and also Itch and sometimes Humble) simply gives you an installer with no DRM at all, meaning that the games will continue to work even if GOG blows up.

So yeah, that's why some people prefer buying on GOG over Steam. That, and European patriotism, sometimes.

Creators are sometimes afraid of this model, sadly, due to the perceived increased potential of piracy. Even though CD PROJEKT RED have repeatedly demonstrated that they can sell their own games with zero DRM and still dominate the top selling charts.

PufPufPuf··on Cloudflare asks browser devs to sign insane NDAs before fixing browser blocking
Thank you for your input, Mr Cloudflare CEO
PufPufPuf··on A look at Firefox forks
Zen looks like Arc Browser, but Firefox-based and open-source. Exactly what I'm looking for!

The UX pattern for tabs in Arc is amazing. No, it's not just "vertical tabs". It's an innovative blend of the concepts of bookmarks and open tabs. Sort of like files: they can be open or closed, and live in a folder hierarchy.

But the development of Arc stopped half a year ago (except security Chromium updates), with a well-working Mac version, but Windows version which is barely usable and no Linux support. The creators decided to focus on some sort of "AI agent" browser.

So I came looking for alternatives that would be cross-platform, have working adblockers, and preferably be open-source. There are some "Firefox transformation" projects like ArcFox, but they are clumsy to set up and usually only copy the general look, not the actually useful features like nested folders. There are extensions like "Tree style tabs" but they work a different way than Arc.

PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
What gave you the idea that it needs Node?
PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
...or you could use a tool somebody already wrote, which even includes a security mechanism.
PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
I use Mise as a drop-in replacement for asdf. It's fully backwards compatible with .tool-versions and other config files, and unlike asdf it uses a PATH-based approach instead of shims.
PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
Ignoring the task runner stuff, Mise is great just as a "better asdf". It allows many more package sources (including pipx, go and cargo), and it puts the actual executables on PATH -- not shims like asdf, which has a tendency to break stuff.
PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
Having to manage Python / Ruby / Node etc. versions by hand is less complex?
PufPufPuf··on Mise: Dev tools, env vars, task runner
Your experience with "such tools" covers experience with Mise, or are you just making assumptions?

My experience with Mise is that it's a great tool.

PufPufPuf··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
You can reset it. But then, Factory Reset Protection kicks in and asks for the Google Account password.
PufPufPuf··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Flashing must be enabled in the OS settings. Without that, the bootloader can't be unlocked.
PufPufPuf··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
That's really an issue of you throwing the keys in the ocean...
PufPufPuf··on JSON Patch
You would need to somehow differentiate between absolute and relative paths, though.
PufPufPuf··on JSON Patch
Also the escaping uses "~" as the escape character, and it escapes "~" and "/" as "~0" and "~1" instead of "~~" and "~/". This whole spec feels like it was written by aliens.
PufPufPuf··on 200GB Free Cloud for Your Files
Both docker and podman support rootless containers. Podman is in no way "better" or "more modern" as you suggest, mostly everyone still uses docker.

What a weird take. There are just a few emphasized words in the commit message.
PufPufPuf··on Gaining access to anyones Arc browser without them even visiting a website
Yeah, I tried it, but it does a fundamentally different thing than Arc
PufPufPuf··on Gaining access to anyones Arc browser without them even visiting a website
As a person that recently started using it: it has something like "tree style tabs", and sort of a hybrid merge of the concepts of tabs and bookmarks. In other words, the tabs work more like files on disk -- open/closed, sorted into folders. I'm probably not explaining it well either, but I encourage you to try it if you ever wanted to experiment with alternative tab management (tree style tab, tab groups etc). It's a concept that clicked for me quickly once I started using it, and now I'm angry since I want to use Firefox for philosophical reasons but don't want to go back to regular tabs.
PufPufPuf··on Show HN: Container Desktop – Podman Desktop Companion
I'm a fan of k3s. Mostly because Rancher Desktop, but there are more useful features, like a full k3s distribution within a single docker container. It includes some nice QoL features, like pre-loading images from a mounted folder. Great for CI.
PufPufPuf··on Docker Desktop Alternative
Rancher Desktop is great, because kubernetes just works. Not only that, you can "docker build" an image, and then immediately spin it up as a kubernetes pod, without spending ten minutes googling the correct commands to correctly "load" the image.
PufPufPuf··on OpenAI threatens to revoke o1 access for asking it about its chain of thought
It doesn't rule out negotiation. That's what the part about a written agreement is for.

It merely rules out pulling prices out of thin air. Which is what OpenAI is doing here, charging for an arbitrary amount of completely invisible tokens. The shady part is that you don't know how much of these hidden tokens you would use before you actually use them, thus making it possible to arbitrarily charge some customers different amounts whenever OpenAI feels like it.

PufPufPuf··on .INTERNAL is now reserved for private-use applications
That's an LLM-automated spam comment if I ever saw one.
PufPufPuf··on Cosmic: A New Desktop Environment
People are just used to how Apple GUIs look like. I could do the same thing, look at the macOS dock and exclaim that it's ugly because the bottom margin is noticeably larger than the top margin. It's all a matter of taste.
