Prunkton··on Estimates of plant CO2 uptake rise by nearly one third
>used new models and measurements to assess GPP from the land at 157 petagrams of carbon per year, up from an estimate of 120 petagrams established 40 years ago and currently used in most estimates of Earth’s carbon cycle

>One petagram equals 1 billion metric tons, which is roughly the amount of CO2 emitted each year from 238 million gas-powered passenger vehicles.

this sounds pretty significant. Any particular reason why it hasn't been updated for the last 40y?

Prunkton··on Ask HN: How to approach first days on a new job as a senior PM?
Since you may not have seen it in your previous career: be aware of politics in companies (that size). Especially when you are interacting with other departments, PMs and positions generally above yours.

I'm not saying its the most important thing or specific to the first days. But getting the dynamics early on will benefit you, your project and the people involved.

Also more specific to day one: have fun and be excited :) good luck!

Playing wow on Linux for a while now. 4k/60fps, max detail. works just fine
Prunkton··on Show HN: High-frequency trading and market-making backtesting tool with examples
to give some examples:

- you can trade crypto 24/7, this sounds obvious but on the other hand side this also means, there is no pre-market trading and all the obscure things attacked to it

- before blocks are being created, transactions are usually collected in so called mempools. (Way oversimplified) block proposers or miners, who are selected to create the next block, can choose which transactions to include, as space is limited. They can also determine the order of these transactions. All of this is publicly visible and opens a lot of opportunities to harvest slippage etc. (lookup MEV-bots)

- generally speaking, there is no robin hood or other intermediary, that can block you from trading

- in crypto, you essentially have access to all available financial products without any barriers to entry compared to traditional finance

it looks like this repository is using Binance APIs for trading. So my statements are no entirely true for this case. But you can use trading bots like this on decentralized exchanges or DeFi products like curve finance without being dependent of an intermediary

Prunkton··on NZ’s biggest data breach shows retention is the sleeping giant of data security
I understand that this may not be the point you are trying to make, but it's important to note that deleting data can result in fines. As mentioned by others, regulated entities such as banks are required to retain data for a certain period of time. For example, a bank regulated by the EU needs to store most data for 10 years, which includes all emails sent by the bank, except for sensitive customer core data that is no longer needed.

So what happens if a bank employee accidentally deletes an email in Microsoft Exchange? This is can not happen due to the policies in place. All emails are stored in a hidden folder for as long as necessary, ensuring that no data is lost.

Prunkton··on NZ’s biggest data breach shows retention is the sleeping giant of data security
Data retention is one of the pillars of the GDPR.

You can be charged for storing more data than is actually needed. For regulated entities like banks, it is important to have processes in place and demonstrate them during your annual audit. In case of non-compliance, you may face fines or even lose your license temporarily until the issue is fixed.

Prunkton··on Game Over: Steam won’t Run on Windows 7 and 8 after January 2024
and best thing: you don't have to setup stuff for hours, it just works (yes, not ALL the games). Same goes for the framerate, just check youtube for your favorite game to compare Linux/Windows framerates. There is a good chance fps are even higher on Linux.

Same goes btw for battle.net (even Diablo 4 seem to work)

I'm on Linux for work related stuff since years now and switched recently entirely to Garuda / KDE

Prunkton··on AMD releases a new flagship CPU for consumer market with 128M of L3 Cache
in like 2 weeks it will be the 10th anniversary of the PC. The GPU is a nvidia GTX(?) 1060 aka already oversized for the 3. Gen i7 setup, so: nope :D
Prunkton··on AMD releases a new flagship CPU for consumer market with 128M of L3 Cache
the Linux test leaves me quiet confused how to pick my next linux gaming cpu.

On the one hand side Gamers Nexus is making a point [0] (there are on/off performance charts later in the video) why it is super important to install the latest windows drivers + special windows gaming software to make use of the heterogeneous architecture. On the other hand side the linux tests are much better then I would expected since it can not know out of the box what core to pick. Maybe the 50/50 pick is good enough for how the charts look...

Prunkton··on Ask HN: EU Bank with Good API?
This^ Banks (based on their products/license) have to provide PSD2 APIs by law. Last time I checked (~3y ago) the quality of the implementations differed a lot so these aggregators made kinda sense to deal with the APIs details. Just think about the different MFA implementations banks are using. Another one for Germany is finapi.io
Prunkton··on This Voice Doesn't Exist – Generative Voice AI
The text to speech function at the top of the article is the actual product but they are not going the extra mile and record it again for the other speed multiplier like x.7 or x2.0. You can clearly hear the mp3 struggling, especially at 0.7 speed.

It would have been interesting how they perform in comparison. The fact you are able to adjust the voices is even one of their selling points. I really wonder why they haven't done that
