PonyoSunshine··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
We just purchased a brand new top of the line Bambu with all the accessories, only for it to be defective on arrival. Their front panel display uses such thin fonts, it makes it almost impossible to read without glasses, and their error codes just send you in infinite loops that make you want to pull your hair out. They really spin themselves as the end all and be all to turn key professional 3d printing, and the reality has been anything but. We are currently waiting on a new part from China that will show up when whomever knows and at best, and all they could offer us a minor credit towards spending more money that doesn't even equal an hours pay.

I wish I could talk better about them, but what a let down. I really hope someone really figures out how to put the screws to them over this GPL violation.

PonyoSunshine··on Over 170k Nonprofits Lost All Their Data. Is Microsoft to Blame?
I started with Microsoft in the DOS, Win 3.0, NT Server 3.51 days. I'll never forget Microsoft promising, writing books that promised, RAS would work on NT 4.0 Server. It was never stable, never consistent. I ended up losing my first job as a Systems Administrator over it. I will never forget being burned by them. Then, there was the joke known as Windows ME (Windows MFE (Multiple Fatal Exceptions)). By Windows 2000, I was over it. I eventually got begged into taking on a Windows Server 2003 / Windows 8 install and talk about a constant pain in my butt. Active Directory seemed so hostile to any external hardware controlling the network. I don't think I could ever miss it. I have been doing Linux and Unix happily for almost 30 years now and I am so grateful for the open source movement. What KDE has turned into today is nothing short of amazing. What Valve has done with Steam and Proton is also nothing short of amazing. It makes everything including MacOS seem like it is a decade behind. I have to use MacOS for my 3d modeling software, but there isn't a day that goes by that I hope to see the news that its finally been ported to Linux.
PonyoSunshine··on IPFS Maintainers Winding Down
I had such high hopes for IPFS. I learned about it really early on. Later, I started working at a certain blockchain company and started to work on a fork of it that extended our blockchain technology in the days right before Filecoin became a thing. I can't say I miss working out it after digging into the internals and finding its shortcomings the hard way. I hope it can evolve, but I really believe Bittorrent is the better solution for most of what it was trying to solve.
PonyoSunshine··on Over 170k Nonprofits Lost All Their Data. Is Microsoft to Blame?
Azure is Microsoft's attempt to get into the market that Amazon dominates with AWS. Microsoft traditionally was a software company. Microsoft today is a desperate company trying to make money and stay relevant in a world fed up with the bull crap that they have been peddling over the years. Windows could have been so much more and better, but it's now a sold out clown show, just like XBox, just like Office, just like every other thing they have ever made. In the 35+ years I have been around Microsoft products, I have never seen a product where they didn't over promise and under deliver. Frankly, that is their MO: Over promise, under deliver, and move on the moment they have squeezed every dime they can out of a product. They are not an honest company, they never have been.
PonyoSunshine··on Ask HN: Github Account Recovery after a 2fa loss
Recently, I moved my phone from its stock Android to GrapheneOS, I also had a laptop stolen that ate a lot of my credentials about 6 months before that. The backups that I made from the phone when it came to Google Authenticator failed. I am trying to get back into my personal GitHub, where it does have the email address right, I do have the right password, I don't have the 2fa. Trying to do the account recovery I made it as far as the picture in the URL, but now everything is greyed out and unclickable about its solutions and I don't know what to do. Where do I go from here to start unlocking this account?
PonyoSunshine··on Zed new terms required to be 18 years old
Tried Zed, never could get into Zed, I found it too slow and cludgy. These days I use Tabby, Neovim, with Lazyvim, and the Victor Mono Nerd Font. It works well enough for me. I have yet to explore connecting it to Claude, that might be an interesting thing. I don't think I'm ever going to be ok with age restrictions within an IDE.
PonyoSunshine··on Elevator Saga: The elevator programming game (2015)
I remember when I first saw this and tried to solve it alone. Quite a humbling experience. I think about Elevator Saga all the time and come back to it from time to time when I have a moment. I have never beat it, but I have made it quite a ways into it. I feel letting ai do the hard work here is missing the point of the puzzle, but it does make for a good litmus test of the models capabilities.
PonyoSunshine··on What Happened to Fry's Electronics
As someone that helped open the Renton, Wa store, I can tell you the biggest problem with Fry's was their ethics. They treated their employees like crap, they lured people to come work for them with promises like health care after 90 days, only to fire most of them on their 89th day. I still have physical scars on my feet today from my time working there.

They would go in and buy failed brands, and use their sales floor to push known faulty products on the wager that if they sold enough of them, and they made it past that 14 day window, they won. They knew what they were doing They would force people to peddle their shit brands, masquerading as a just another product on the shelf. In short, they deserved to die in a fire and the world is better without them. If you are going to feel about about any of this, feel for the countless unnamed employees lives they used and threw away like a dirty rag after constantly guilt tripping you for not being enough.

PonyoSunshine··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
I managed to make it through most of the UK, but I ran into an issue in Portsmouth. On the map, it appeared there were a whole bunch of shipping lane options, but when I tried both, one only had two cryptic options, and the other had none. Possibly, it would also be nice to have some sort of toggable pda that had an itinerary of all the tickets you have purchased, but haven't used yet.
PonyoSunshine··on Show HN: I built a macOS tool for network engineers – it's called NetViews
I talked to you last month when you posted this. I did end up buying a copy, and it has been somewhat useful.

Three things, it drives me nuts when it migates to the localhost interface, but doesn't migrate back. Either, we need to lock to an interface, or just have the option to remove one.

Two, constantly bouncing in the dock is incredibly annoying and distracting. We don't need more distractions, we need less.

Three, showing the wifi mesh info has actually proven to help, but it would really be even more helpful if you could expand that to rates and more wifi protocols.

PonyoSunshine··on What's at the Other End of 8.8.8.8?
Does anyone know what hardware Google is using to complete these requests? I hoping the article would go into that detail and I found it sadly lacking.
PonyoSunshine··on F-16 Falcon Strike
Woah what? Can you tell me more about Falcon 5.0? I used to play 3.0 back in the day and was a super huge fan of it.
PonyoSunshine··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I am in North Seattle, and I have a flock of nerds under me that would like to see real demonstrations of penetration testing via radio (Wifi and more). I have been proposing doing monthly meetups where we go up on a the rooftop of various buildings, bust out the tools, the antennas, and every other toy we have to scan and show how it's done. There are stories about others and me that the younger generation would love to see in action and then we teach what is going on, how we are doing it, and more importantly, when we find a vulnerable target, offer help to fix the hole. Kind of like white hat pen testing. So many of the younger generation wants to exploit things, but do not understand the ethics as to why and why not, and how to do good with having those sort of skills. I know this might be slightly off topic, but I think the real answer to the question here is who is willing to take the lead and step out of the normal club, party, con, meetup crap and get back to the old school groups like we had back in the 90s?

It seems a lot of you are in Seattle and I'm willing to try and host an event like this if any of you might be interested.

PonyoSunshine··on Show HN: AI in SolidWorks
Congratulations. I have been pondering myself if I could do something similar with Rhino. Is there any chance this can be adopted to other platforms like Rhino?
PonyoSunshine··on Show HN: PingStalker – A macOS tool for network engineers
I was excited see what this could do, but the moment I saw it was a one day trial, I was so turned off that I didn't even bother wasting my time even looking into it and just removed it.

If you want people to invest time investigating your product to see if it's a good fit, don't rush them. I know you are probably eager to turn this into a profitable product, but this is not how to approach people like me if you want to see any sort of return.

Maybe make a lite version that is free and make your paid option have all the extra bells and whistles in it, but please, don't do this.

Same problem for me. MacOS/Firefox.

PonyoSunshine··on Cloudflare has made it too easy to access your homelab on the internet
I once had a project where I had more than one person trying to play an emulated game online through a custom Dolphin Emulator build on the same LAN segment. Due to the nature of how the client was trying to use ports, port forwarding was not helping due to overlap (clients wanted the exact same ports open and could not be distributed). I eventually gave up trying to do port forwarding and instead had each person get a VM with an extra IP assigned to it in a local data center. Linux supports different network configs per application and I managed to use TincVPN as an Ethernet bridge between the VM's Ethernet and each local machine, where I assigned the 2nd IP from the VM to the end of the tunnel and created a custom routing table only for Dolphin to be started with that used the VMs routing configuration. Effectively, it looked like they were playing their games from inside the data center.
