Cofounding Terminal 1. We're the the only full-service recruiting agency in Hong Kong where every recruiter has deep industry experience. That means 10+ years of experience implementing everything from distributed databases to ensemble machine learning models.

Poleris··on Atrium Raises $65M
Hi Justin,

I noticed that you've scaled the business quite quickly since inception a year ago, growing to around 100 employees.

I see a lot of advice saying to keep growth to only ~2x FTEs per year to preserve culture. How do you reconcile that with your hyper-scale financing and hiring trajectory?

Thanks, really appreciate your thoughts.

Also in the same field, eng turned recruiter. Would love to connect and share experiences if you have time. Email is in my profile.
Poleris··on Ask HN: Any good resources for finding software jobs abroad?
I'm part of a recruitment firm that specializes in overseas jobs, mostly Asia as we're based in HK. (Our name is Terminal 1 even.)

Please contact me (email in profile) if you're interested in moving out here.

Data Scientists at Asia Miles, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways in Hong Kong. Email in profile.
Poleris··on Ask HN: I will help your startup in exchange for food and a place to stay
Hong Kong is also an option. Relatively lenient on the work visa as long as you are skilled. Similar with a growing number of startups and big corps hiring lots of developers.

Shoot me an email (in my profile) if you need help / are strongly considering HK.

Poleris··on Show HN: "Who is hiring" mapped
Part of it is the source code. It specifically scans for keywords such as SoMA and associates it with SF. Other countries / states / cities get no such special treatment.

Made me sad as my company in Hong Kong (and all others in Asia) doesn't show up.

Kites (Hong Kong) http://kites.hk

Kites is a POI data company focused on Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. We aggregate data from individual merchants, scrapers, human sources, etc. and syndicate to many publishers.

We've been around for ~1.5 years and have 7 amazing people.

We're looking for a senior dev / architect. You want to deeply understand the customer and business model and drive the technology roadmap. You should be whip-smart technically and ideally have a solid theoretical CS background. Experience leading a technical team a big plus.

This position will especially appeal to hackers interested in gaining foreign experience. :) We'll help you relocate. Email in profile.

Poleris··on Oxford announces new degree in Computer Science and Philosophy
I would deeply appreciate advice from you or anyone who has thoughts.

I did a double major in CS and Business during my undergrad at CMU ('09) and focused very much on practical learning (read: programming/web apps) and corporate/startup endeavors. However, I was always drawn towards studying the relationship between minds and machines on my own time. Mostly triggered from Godel's theorem, reading GEB/AI books, and some obsessive impulse to learn about my own mind.

Now that I'm working my first job, this impulse is stronger than ever. I find myself reading papers/books on philosophy, anthropic mechanism, AI, etc. during what free time I have. I suspect that I should study a PhD in this subject, given this impulse doesn't seem to be going away.

However, I have absolutely no research experience and had little contact with professors during my undergrad. Would you advise I seriously pursue this intellectual interest as a PhD (versus during my free time)? If so, do you have any thoughts on how I should go about applying? Given that most applications require research recommendations, I was thinking of contacting professors of papers I admired, but am not sure how well that approach would work.

Thank you for reading! My email is in my profile if that works better.

Why not just edit Gabriel's? As far as I can tell, it's a wiki.
Poleris··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
There are some cool things being done in virtual cooperation/teamwork explorations. Make a robot in virtual space and see how it interacts with other robots!
Poleris··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
I really like the concept behind this Ask HN, especially the "help someone else in the thread with their goals." I'll definitely try.

Goal: Launch a non-profit student apprenticeship program in partnership with a few corporations.

Roadblock #1: While doing my 9-7 job.

Roadblock #2: A few of my web applications are finally reaching the "need to incorporate" stage. Have very little clue about law and accounting.

Roadblock #3: Have some of the clients/partnerships down, but getting the right students and professionals involved is difficult.

Poleris··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
It might be interesting to just learn how to be a great information architect and product manager. Head a team of offshore developers to make your ideas happen.

Just an idea...

Booz Allen (http://www.boozallen.com), a large government consulting firm in Washington, DC is on a serious hiring spree right now because of a new flexible recruiting model.

I work with the Diplomacy and Intl. Development (DID) team in IT strategy, but I can put you in touch with the right people if you want to do something else. We do everything from public policy to systems development. Basically, a great way to get some consulting experience.

Great job on Shapado! A question: how long did this take you in development-hours and over how many months?

Poleris··on Stackoverflow clone using Rails, Mongomapper and Mongodb
Out of curiosity, what other StackOverflow clones are there out there and how does Shapado compare to them? Is this the most mature out of them all or simply notable because it is built using Rails?
Poleris··on Why Networking Sucks for Introverts (and one way I'm trying to fix it for us)
I wonder how much of what he ascribes to the extroversion versus introversion (EvI) struggle should actually be ascribed to the sensing versus intuition (SvN) conflict. (See Myers-Briggs for descriptions of these dichotomies.)

Software engineers have also been shown to be very high on the N scale and have classically been placed in the NT temperament. (For anecdotal evidence, see past MBTI surveys on Hacker News and Reddit.)

Main point: communication style discrepancies, by Myers-Briggs definition, should be attributed to SvN, not EvI.

Poleris··on Ask HN: Who's hiring (take 3)?
If you work at the Times, do you mind sharing your email so I can shoot you some questions?
Poleris··on Ask HN: What APIs do you wish existed?
I'm actually working on this problem. It's remarkable the amount of content we actually generate and the number of services/mediums we generate them on. Simply fetching all the data and hosting it centrally is a large enough problem, let alone indexing all of it.
Poleris··on Ask HN: Are these personal projects worth open-sourcing?
Hi Jacques,

re: 1, do I just put it on github and hope people find it by themselves? Do I advertise it? If so, how?

Thanks for the interest, I'll work on cleaning it up now.

- Edwin

Poleris··on Ask HN: Are these personal projects worth open-sourcing?
That is exactly why I'd like to open-source my work. My concern is more about the practical question of how and/or seeing if I persuade someone to walk me through the process.
Poleris··on Minimalist Gmail by Matt Constantine
I just installed it and the largest problem I'm having is with access to search. Hitting '/' no longer focuses the search box and hitting the arrow is cumbersome. Anyone have a workaround aside from enabling the clunky header?
Poleris··on Student Loans are the New Indentured Servitude
That was a very interesting article and brought up a couple of tools I wasn't aware of. I'm unsure of your intended audience, so take this with a grain of salt: your writing style tends to be verbose and you could do without much of the introduction.

That said, I'll be looking forward to part 2!
