Pirate-of-SV··on Don't use Git rebase
By rewriting commits and using `git rebase -i`, `git commit --fixup` you can avoid the garbage and still have smaller commits that passes tests and are easy to review.
Pirate-of-SV··on Vagrant 2.0
Docker performs much better on a VirtualBox VM than the VM used by Docker for Mac
Pirate-of-SV··on Show HN: Compare local Docker images with ones in registry
What you say is true for container images and putting an ELF binary as the only file in an image doesn't make much sense if your only purpose is to run it without any other requirements.

However don't forget that Docker also gives the user an interface for running processes in a namespace and cgroup!

Pirate-of-SV··on Read This Before You Build Uber for X
"Uber for X" became the Uber for analogies and it's definitely not used as much today than a few years ago due to their current situation and issues.
Pirate-of-SV··on Manage Kubernetes Clusters on AWS Using Kops
If you're using (or want to use) Terraform and consider running k8s on AWS take a look at tectonic-installer[1] and its `vanilla_k8s` setting. My opinion is that it's far better than kops `-target=terraform` output. It's also using CoreOS rather than Debian which seems reasonable.

Pirate-of-SV··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
I did that as well! The outcome was an improved way of working.
Pirate-of-SV··on Footgun Prevention with AWS VPC Subnetting and Addressing
NAT Gateway support bursts up to 10 Gbps[1] and t2.small something like 125-200 Mbps [2]. For production use cases this can make a huge difference.

Pirate-of-SV··on About pull request reviews
An option of having a variable number of required approvals would be nice.

Or something to enforce: "One person creates pull request, another reviews, a third merges."

Pirate-of-SV··on Can Sweden tackle the throwaway society?
> Does Sweden not have garbage disposal fees?

We do but for the kind of garbage like tires and dishwashers the importing/producing/selling party is required to also take care of the costs related to the product after its life-cycle.

Effectively this trickles down to the consumer of course so you've already paid for the disposal indirectly.

Pirate-of-SV··on OVH automatically migrates expiring paid SSL to Let's Encrypt certificates
Then you should probably renew the expiring cert.
Pirate-of-SV··on Ask HN: Any good resources for finding software jobs abroad?
For Sweden: LinkedIn and Stack Overflow Careers will take you pretty far in the job search.
Pirate-of-SV··on Python 3.6 dict becomes compact and keywords become ordered
Across processes perhaps? But hash(a) == hash(a) and hash(b) == hash(b) so a dictionary that with a and b inserted will yield the same order every time.

    d1 = dict()
    d1['a'] = 1
    d1['b'] = 1
    print(d1.keys())

    d2 = dict()
    d2['a'] = 1
    d2['b'] = 1
    print(d2.keys())
Pirate-of-SV··on Python 3.6 dict becomes compact and keywords become ordered
Deprecating it won't affect that code since it's more of a flag to indicate that future use should be limited to ensure forward compatibility.
Pirate-of-SV··on Python 3.6 dict becomes compact and keywords become ordered

    dict_keys(['c', 'd', 'e', 'b', 'a'])   # random order
> random

Maybe I'm nit picky but I find the misuse of that word annoying. My experience of CPython is that dicts are unordered but deterministic. Not random.

Pirate-of-SV··on Docker not ready for primetime
Where can I read more about the container patterns you mentioned?
Pirate-of-SV··on Show HN: Dependency CI – Continuous testing for your dependencies
Would be cool if it could support Puppet modules.
Pirate-of-SV··on Dark side of a Valley software engineer

Pirate-of-SV··on Dark side of a Valley software engineer
One of the quotes in this article was written by me on Quora. At the time of typing my response was intentended to be more of a semi serious rant.

Just thought this would be worth mentioning.

Pirate-of-SV··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
I tried to find some more information about this. Seems like the article is referring to a request that was made in March 2016 [1] by the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

Their timeline of "The Assange Matter" in Swedish is a bit more detailed [2]

Pirate-of-SV··on Show HN: Tag – instantly jump to your ag matches
Cool but I'm not a big fan of the idea by storing "state" in aliases that later commands can reference. (It's better than environment variables though.)

For source code I've had a really good experience with ctags[1].

Pirate-of-SV··on Show HN: Arc – secure file archiver
Cool! I usually use gpg-zip for this purpose on machines where I have gpg installed.

  gpg-zip --symmetric --gpg-args --cipher-algo=AES256 --output backup.tar.gpg file1 file2 file3
Pirate-of-SV··on Ask HN: What's the biggest risk you took in your career that paid off?
How do you do this exactly? Do you threaten to leave if you dont get X in salary or is it more implicit that you quit and the next company give you a salary that is closer to X than the previous?
Pirate-of-SV··on Blue Ocean: a new user experience for Jenkins
CI is about the automation of testing code changes before they are merged into the main branch of development. CD is about deploying changes automatically in a live environment.
Pirate-of-SV··on Show HN: TLS cert expiration dashboard
I would really appreciate if browsers could implement some kind of Javascript API for retrieving Cert information of the current page. (In my opinion it would make more sense than the Battery Status API [1])

Pirate-of-SV··on Make Your Own Programming Language (2015)
Type declarations are similar to Haskell's. Haskell is also whitespace dependent.
Pirate-of-SV··on AWS X1 instances – 1.9 TB of memory
MongoDB's In-Memory storage engine would be pretty sweet to try out with the X1 instance :)
Pirate-of-SV··on Git Tips
Since interactive rebase was mentioned I'd recommend taking a look at its --autosquash flag and the --fixup flag of commit. With autosquash the interactive rebase will move fixup commits to where they belong:

  git commit --fixup=<commitref>
  git rebase -i --autosquash HEAD~5
Pirate-of-SV··on Google CDN Beta is already one of the fastest CDNs
Would be cool if you could add an image of the table with average measured times by country for the selection of european countries. (Marked with double asterisk in the post)

I guess the difference between these countries could be noticeable.

Alternatively you could post it here. I'm mainly interested in the Swedish numbers.

Pirate-of-SV··on Managing dotfiles with GNU Stow
Do you remove all files from the directory before cloning or have you found some other way to get around "fatal: destination path '.' already exists and is not an empty directory."?
Pirate-of-SV··on Managing dotfiles with GNU Stow
That's a really nice solution actually, letting git do the magic. I'm definitely gonna try it. At the moment I use a python install script that backup already existing files and set up the symlinks.
