PierceJoy··on Covid-19 Cases and Deaths by Vaccination Status
Can you clarify why people should avoid physical exertion in the 14 day window?

Also, is there currently any evidence that your immune system is generally less effective during that time?

PierceJoy··on After criticism, Apple to only seek abuse images flagged in multiple nations
It was not that long ago that Apple wrote this letter https://www.apple.com/customer-letter/.

> Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control.

PierceJoy··on The Good and the Limitations of Github Copilot
What’s with the editorialized title based on a single sentence in the article?
PierceJoy··on Apple buys a company every three to four weeks
If you were never trying to debate Apple's acquisition practises, then you probably shouldn't have participated in the debate about them. Someone else started it, yes, but you then replied to them. That makes it fair to respond to your reply and address the contents of that reply. You directly commented on how Apple assimilates their acquisitions, and implied others do not. That is what I am addressing.

I completely understand that's not what your top level comment was about, but I didn't reply to your top level comment.

I think you might feel insulted by my use of cherry picking. I apologize for that. I can understand why you might feel that way, but it was meant more in the sense that the examples referred to are not comparable, not that you did it on purpose out of bad faith.

PierceJoy··on Apple buys a company every three to four weeks
No offence, but this latest comment doesn't fit with the original comment I replied to. You were clearly commenting on what Apple does with their acquisitions, not the tone of the response, and that is what I was replying to. You said "What Apple does with the acquisitions I think is far more relevant" and then went on to detail how you thought they handled their acquisitions differently.

That said, I don't agree that the tone is different for Apple vs any other company. I would have agreed years ago, but it's not longer my observation today.

PierceJoy··on Apple buys a company every three to four weeks
That's a fair point, but I think you've cherry picked a few very notable examples and made an apples to oranges comparison. The other tech companies acquire hundreds of small companies and shut them down. Google is notorious for this. The examples you used were big companies with massive user bases before the acquisition. I suspect Apple's most notable acquisition to date is Beats, and it continues to operate under it's own brand today.
PierceJoy··on Apple buys a company every three to four weeks
Maybe years ago, but I feel like this is the opposite of reality today. I've seen far more hypocritical criticism of Apple on HN than baseless support for a number of years now.
PierceJoy··on Apple buys a company every three to four weeks
Is this a distinction without a difference? LinkedIn's tech is wholly owned and funded by Microsoft. If you are competing with LinkedIn, you are competing with Microsoft regardless of the name on the website. Since more diverse competition is the goal, I don't believe these situations are actually different.
PierceJoy··on Justice Dept files suit against Facebook for discriminating against U.S. workers
You said anything about being racist? I'm implying your comment is ridiculous, because you've used being racially Chinese as a proxy for not being American, which is clearly not valid.
PierceJoy··on Innovative universal flu vaccine shows promise in first clinical test
There's an assumption here that getting the flu is natural. What reason do you have to believe that? Many people, especially in lower density areas, go their entire lives without ever getting the flu. If you have some evidence that getting the flu can have protective effects, please present it.
PierceJoy··on Justice Dept files suit against Facebook for discriminating against U.S. workers
Is this a serious comment? First, skimming Linkedin is hardly an accurate way to see the racial makeup of a company. Second, Facebook has offices all over the world. Third, and most importantly, you know Chinese Americans exist, right?
PierceJoy··on Actively speaking two languages protects against cognitive impairment

PierceJoy··on 25th Anniversary of the Theatrical Release of "Hackers"
Hackers is probably a big reason I got into computers as a kid in the 90's. I wish I still had that same feeling of awe and excitement about them today.
PierceJoy··on [dead]
He was fined $900 the previous day and ordered by the police to stay in his hotel until continuing his trip to Alaska. They found him the next day at a sightseeing gondola. He claimed he was just out looking for food, when there was food available at his hotel. He deserves whatever he got.
PierceJoy··on Citigroup clerical error of $900M; a beneficiary refuses to hand back $175M
> Revlon's bank repaid Revlon's loan using money Revlon didn't have. Oops! But that's not clearly a reason for the lender to return the repaid loan.

I think the point about it being money Revlon didn't have is important. The money came from the bank's accounts, not Revlon's. The owner of that account (Citigroup) had no debt owed to Brigade, so I don't think the bill pay analogy is quite apt. This seems like nothing more than an accidental transfer, which happens all the time and are always reversed.

PierceJoy··on Former Zoox employees sue, alleging rival offer was better than Amazon's
What were equivalent players paid before the unions existed? Sports unions are responsible for the massive increase in pay over the years. Those top performers would have been making much less in the absence of a union, both at the start and in the peak of their careers. I personally don't view that as decreased individual leverage.

> As soon as the union-negotiated common salary time runs out, top players’ pay jumps several times.

That 'several times' level only exists because of the unions.

PierceJoy··on Former Zoox employees sue, alleging rival offer was better than Amazon's
Professional athlete unions are a strong counter example. Unions do what their members want them to do.
PierceJoy··on Former Zoox employees sue, alleging rival offer was better than Amazon's
The unions you are referring to are almost universally for blue collar workers. Most professional athletes are members of unions. Most highly paid actors are members of a union. Neither of those groups have decreased individual leverage. It's unlikely that a union for highly paid white collar workers would closely resemble a union for blue collar workers.
PierceJoy··on Low-cost measurement of facemask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets
Potentially a good thing to keep in mind for the upcoming ski season if people think their fleece face coverings will be effective.
PierceJoy··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
The point of my comment wasn't that mumble rap is good, it's that music is subjective. There is no good or bad music. There is only music that is good to some, and bad to others. Mumble rap is good to enough people that it propagated.
PierceJoy··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
I prefer good lyrics over mumble rap, but music is entirely subjective. You think it's a step backwards, but young people think it's a step forwards.

Mumble rap is essentially just natural selection. Some random rapper started doing it, people liked it, and so it propagated. If people didn't like it, it would have died out quickly. You just aren't one of those people.

> It's samey as hell and stagnant and lacks innovation.

I've said the same thing about metal since the first time I heard it. Metal fans disagree. Who's right? Does it even matter?

PierceJoy··on Proton pump inhibitors (heartburn meds) linked with increased risk of dementia
A very timely comment for me. I’ve been experiencing some throat/coughing issues for a couple months now. Doctor doesn’t think it was covid, but who knows. I did, however, stop taking a nasal steroid I had been using for a few years right around the same time the symptoms started. Maybe I’ll start using it again and see what happens. Thanks.
PierceJoy··on Concerns with that Stanford antibody study of coronavirus prevalence
If the sample was biased, then the results cannot be generalized to the whole population. The purpose of this study was not to find positive cases to treat, it was to estimate the prevalence in the general population.
PierceJoy··on US oil prices turn negative as demand dries up
But does this mean that the contract holder is paying someone to take their oil in the future? It feels significant that someone in the chain from producer to consumer is now paying to have someone take their product.
PierceJoy··on Bosch develops rapid test for Covid-19
> With the tests currently in use, patients must usually wait one to two days for a result.

Is that because it takes 2 days for the test to complete, or because there a 2 day delay from backlog + administrative time?

PierceJoy··on iOS now requires Sign On with Apple alongside other auth providers
Tap the Sign on with Apple button. Native dialog pops up with two sections. First section shows your name with an edit button. You can change your first and last name to whatever you want. Second section has two radio buttons, provide your real email address or provide a proxy address. Click continue. Done.
PierceJoy··on The Perils of Private Provision of Public Goods
Sounds good to me. I bet they don't, though. Regardless, their premise is still false. No one was forced to do anything.
PierceJoy··on iOS now requires Sign On with Apple alongside other auth providers
Good. It's 10x better than any other sign on system out there. The ease of use and privacy protections are incredible. This will force the other companies to up their game or get left behind as no user in their right mind would use something else if given the choice.
PierceJoy··on The Perils of Private Provision of Public Goods
> I can never support forcing a private business into offering a public utility.

So I suppose you support increase taxation to fund these public utilities?

Also, Starbucks wasn't forced to do this. They chose to.

PierceJoy··on How the Nike Vaporfly War Was Lost
This is admittedly not my area of expertise, but don't all shoes do that? Unless the rubber permanently deforms, any rebound at all is returning energy.
