I'd argue that chrome OS sounds a lot like it's an OS built around the browser and Web apps.
PhillyG··on Show HN: A hybrid messaging/photo message board
It's a fun idea and good beta, and it's easy to see how, with a few improvements, it could be useful for a few purposes.

More detail: 1)Sometimes when I'm messaging, I wouldn't want a picture taken - for example if it's first thing in the morning and I've still got bed-hair and I'm in my pyjamas. So for some messaging purposes, that would be an issue and I'd want to opt out of sending a picture, while still being able to send a message. The makeshift alternative is taking a picture of the ceiling or something irrelevant. I suppose denying the camera permission might work too? I guess if I where using this with purpose I'd try that. Taking pictures is fine as is for business or work related things, or anything else where its reasonable for all users to have an expectation of looking presentable. Though that does mean I feel it doesn't solve the annoyance of getting ready for a video chat when you don't look your best. 2)I couldn't see how to set up a private room if I wanted to - I saw it mentioned that that feature exists but it's a mystery how I'd access it 3)There's the age old issue for anonymous-ish public message boards with images - preventing misuse. You seem aware of this issue thankfully! 4)the mebeam keyboard looks cool but isn't as easy or efficient to use as a regular virtual keyboard. Personally I would just let users use their regular keyboard, rather than trying to create one just for this one service. 5) on my phone, whenever front or rear camera is mentioned it's referring to the opposite of how I think of front and rear. Holding the phone so I'm looking at the screen, if I choose rear camera my face is shown on camera, surely that would be the front camera? I can't tell if my cameras are getting switched round somehow or if I'm just wrong.

That looks pretty cool. An up to date link would be cool. Maybe do a show HN post for it when you're at the next update too?

8 lines of code total, 9 if you include the empty line at the end. I didn't know you could put so few tags and have it render. No <body> or even <html>, that's quite impressive

Glad to help!

1) ooh cool! I think simply having that default prepopulated at $1000 goes a long way to making decision quick- that value immediately gets me deciding if I need to go higher, lower or the same.

2) those changes sound like they'll really help. How about also having a badge on the public pages to show a project has done that step, and saying that on the admin page as a reason to do it as soon as possible.

3) maybe also a link to set up a wallet. I realise this is extra development and payment fees, but enabling regular card transactions would be great - maybe only have it for some projects where anonymity isn't useful. PayPal (or something similar) would be a good compromise.

Additionally:

In theory I could use this to a/b test completely different paths for a project to take, or a selection of different project ideas. It's so simple to upload, and I can do this without having a video demo. You might even be able to just take $10 as a flat upfront fee per listing once you've proven that good ideas get funding there.

PhillyG··on Show HN: Check if my startup ideas have legs
Backers on Kickstarter could also be chipping in more money than the person with the idea. Ks do have an optional spreadsheet that campaigns can fill in to check if money will cover their costs, with the incentive that it can potentially help their campaign get shown more prominently, and potential backers get shown a pie chart that is supposedly helpful. People on ks don't seem to give the amount of time or thought into decisions as you'd expect of an angel or VC investor though, so I'm not sure how worth it that extra aggro really is

So I just tried this for TeaRounder (my solo project I've been working on in spare time for a while). I did an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign for it a few months ago, so I can compare them from a project founder view.

Positives: -It was 20-30 times quicker to upload to ptwi, significantly less daunting and was hassle free. I literally did this in five to ten minutes, immediately after seeing this thread. Ks felt like an ordeal, and took the best part of a week to get set up, including multiple drafts, setting up screenshots just to fit their layout, filling out a spreadsheet that wasn't really aimed at the kind of project I had - not to mention their system for verifying payment details and getting checked for fit with their rules (they tell you to allow a certain amount of business days for someone to check it, and don't really make it clear that that's only done if they're automatic system flags something up)

- your website name makes my intentions more clear. With Kickstarter there's often this impression people have, that the campaign is the main or only source of funding for a project, which can be downright harmful to projects. I remember a game console Kickstarter getting lots of flack for asking for an amount that people thought wouldn't be enough to make it work. When you only need a little bit or nothing at all, it's not helpful to have to inflate the amount you're asking for, on an all or nothing form of funding. (To me now, crowdfunding is basically a "vague acquaintances and people in the same online communities as me" round)

Negatives: 1)I couldn't change the amount I'm asking for in total. It might be because I'm on mobile, but even with zooming in, it didn't seem like that was even an input box. $1000 is way more than I need to prove that it's worth continuing on that route. I'd be happier doing $200 but on just a few days of the ad being live, since the next stage is only really a $5 per year thing. (Edit: 5$ per year is roughly what I'd want to charge each user for a basic level subscription)

2) the message about paying $10 to show I'm not a spammer. That is shown once the page is live and it's rather confusing. I don't know your brand and in my experience in the UK most companies that check if you're real by taking money and then refunding do £1, so being asked for $10 on that basis makes me nervous. Makes me question why there wasn't a captcha, or email verification, or restriction to one upload. It took me writing this up to realise posting projects to ptwi is anonymous. That also explains using cryptocurrency and having to save a specific link to administer the page. Feels really odd but kind of cool.

3) I've never used any cryptocurrency before, and I also wouldn't want to have to explain how to use it to people I share the link with. Ideally I should be able to just send the link to people with a short warm intro and leave them to it

Here's the shareable page that I got:

PhillyG··on ADHD-resistant sticky note that changes color and font often to not disappear
I think procrastination from ADHD effects is a really tiny part of it. Reasons for me not making ADHD tools or for my general symptoms so far in life:

1)I get tonnes of ideas to work on, far more than I could ever create. 99% of them aren't obviously anything to do with symptoms or ADHD at all. The projects that could help with ADHD have to compete for my time with ideas that solve some other thing I think of solving. 1b) there have been some problems that with hindsight where magnified because of poor working memory or other symptoms, but since I hadn't realised that's why they bothered me so much, I'd talk about them to other people and the ideas would be shot down or tweaked for mass-market usage. Since I want to solve problems, and get paid for it at some point, if I'm told "yeah that's just you, nobody else has that problem" it's easy to think "okay then, I'll move on to my next favourite idea even though I really want this one to exist". 2) it's hard to get non-adhd people to get excited by products that solve ADHD issues (needed if you want to do any kind of funding, even family and friends round). For starters ADHD is really badly misunderstood by the general population. Many symptoms look like we're not trying hard enough in some area of self care or organisation plus the acronym is straight up a terrible representation of the condition - it highlights only the most noticeable traits it shows as in young patients - not the areas that negatively effect people in working life. Also lots of big pain points for ADHD sufferers are felt to a much lesser extent by non-adhd, and so there are tools that are able to solve it for non-adhd but don't quite work for us. A quick look or even a bit of usage can make a tool look like it solves the problem when it really doesn't for us

Probably more reasons but this is getting long and I need to end this comment at some point

PhillyG··on ADHD-resistant sticky note that changes color and font often to not disappear
I've got quite a few of the symptoms, though not a full diagnosis yet. Am making TeaRounder.com which on the surface is about ordering drinks, but to me it's largely about ending an awkward part of normal life for me - forgetting lists in social moments that most people would be able to remember. I do wonder sometimes if it would be worth me just pursuing the ADHD and "chronically forgetful" side of it.
PhillyG··on I used to build stuff all the time, then I got a job
ADHD doesn't mean you can't ever focus. It means you have much less control over what you focus on. ADHD people can even have a tendency to hyperfocus on things that interest them or give them a constant dopamine drip. Hyperfocus can lead them to forget to eat or stay up very late without even noticing, simply because they're focused so hard on the thing they're preoccupied by.

Oooof I was assuming it was a different Maddie. But yes that's the most famous Maddie in the UK. Might be a coincidence though. It feels like it was over ten years the Maddie you're thinking of disappeared while on holiday

(Edit: looked it up) Maddie McCann disappeared in may 2007
