I would do some kind of computer vision to identify people, or count them and send that data instead, those operations should be easy on a microcontroller.
That said, I too wanted one in my teens, the problem was that I didn't ask for it, I just bought it, and alot of them.
I don't have a Pi 400 but I have a similar cyberdeck that has the addition of a screen with the keyboard and board. I use it as a swiss army tool on the go for managing my cloud servers. Its like the classic monitor and keyboard you have hanging on top of your rack, but portable :D
It will have different layouts and they will be set by the json, so basically the user only needs to supply a well structured json and boom! you have a virtual keyboard for any app.

Out of curiosity I learned myself playing with locks, its a matter of practice and feel.
If you want to go deep into it they sell transparent training locks so you can see the springs.
The best purpose was impressing friends and also emergency situations that I needed to unlock something that im allowed to (mine or friends).
He was probably refering to automatize the removal, with crawlers or so.
It has a pc-like bios.
I don´t know how appealing would be for non-slavs but most slavs would find it nice.
