Petefine··on Revolut confirms customer data breach through fake government requests
That's how chargebacks often work. Then they ask the merchant for evidence the charge was legitimate. If convinced, they will retract that initial quick refund.
Petefine··on Datasaurus: Never trust summary statistics; visualize your data (2016)
This might be a problem, but if you're careful to make use of transparency, axis scaling and random jitter (for integer or categorical values), the occlusion issue can be overcome.
Petefine··on R vs. Python for Data Science
For me the readability of tidyverse code is crucial. I like pandas and use it daily, but often it requires deciphering to understand what is happening, especially regarding indexing. But tidyverse code can be easily read, and that has been a big help in enabling collaberation amongst our data team.
Petefine··on Engineers Shouldn’t Write ETL
Do you have a forum or suggestions tool at all? Fivetran has been amazing for our new datawarehouse and we're very pleased with the service, but there are a few little (non-bug) things that would have made it even easier.
Petefine··on Ask HN: Data diff tool for tabular data?
Beyond Compare has a tabular data mode, where you set the key columns and it presents the differences in a nice interface. Works well for me. http://www.scootersoftware.com
Petefine··on Microsoft’s Bing uses Google search results–and denies it (2011)
They're weren't claiming that when you searched bing, they did a google search immediately in the background. Rather, they claim that they were collecting google's ranking and using it in their own ranking algorithms. They wouldn't have ever have collected data on hiybbprqag without their previous actions.
Petefine··on Ask HN: How and where can I publish my research on AI as a college dropout?
Could you link to your research here please? That would help us advise on routes to publication.
Petefine··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)
Hi, I'm afraid we're not able to do that for this position, sorry.

15gifts | Junior Data Scientist | Brighton, UK | ONSITE http://www.15gifts.com

15gifts' decision-engine technology powers some of the largest corporations in the UK including Virgin Media, EE, Sky and The Times, and we're growing rapidly. We are now looking for a talented data scientist to join our team and help shape the recommendation algorithms that underpin our product.

You'll be working on the algorithms that underpin our product, and will be responsible for interpreting large amounts of behavioural data to discover the underlying stories and opportunities. Then you'll identify, help implement and test algorithms and optimisations that drive real improvements to our product's performance. You'll work closely with other parts of the business to ensure that the whole product is focused on maximising the benefit of the algorithms that we develop.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with SQL and Python and/or R, have a firm grounding in Data Science principles as well as experience in analysing and visualising data sets. The process will start with a phone chat, and then an interview based around a dataset that we'll ask you to analyse in advance.

DATA SCIENTIST

15gifts' decision-engine technology powers some of the largest corporations in the UK including Virgin Media, EE, Sky and The Times, and we're growing rapidly. We are now looking for a talented data scientist to join our team and help shape the recommendation algorithms that underpin our product.

Our data science team is at the heart of the company and plays a crucial role in analysing and visualising customer behaviour - using the data to build statistical and machine learning models that generate highly tailored recommendations and drive the product forward through data-led optimisations.

We're looking for someone with strong analysis, statistics, machine learning and programming skills (we’re particularly fond of Python and R). It's a great opportunity to work for a small company (13 employees), while analysing data from some of the largest e-commerce sites in the country and beyond. Petefine··on Show HN: Listen to a playlist of bands coming to your town
this worked fantastically for me.

I didn't actually expect to use the site - I thought I'd just glance at it and close. But it was so slick that before I really noticed what was happening, Spotify was playing a list of lots of small bands playing around Brighton (UK) in the next week. Cheers for building it!

Would be great if you could filter by genre somehow.

Petefine··on Ask HN: Why is IE8 usage growing?
When I follow [1], IE8's numbers are (from Jan) 2.56%, 2.61%, 2.13%, 2.19%, 2.26%. So they don't look to have grown at all.

If anything they've declined a little, although this may be within the margin for error for the sample.

15 Gifts - London, Brighton (http://www.15gifts.com)

15gifts is changing the way people shop online through a unique and intelligent decision engine platform - learning from the buying decisions of like-minded shoppers to help customers quickly find their ideal product. We're growing rapidly and our technology already powers some of the largest corporations in the UK including Virgin Media, Orange, T-Mobile and The Times.

We're looking for an experienced Python developer. As an early stage employee (there are currently 5 of us), you will get the chance to shape the technology stack, as we develop a new python-based platform.

I'm happy to chat about our plans and the role. peter.fine@15gifts.com

Petefine··on From PhD to Data Scientist: Tips for Making the Transition
There certainly is an overlap. But for me, the difference between a Data Scientist and an Analyst is that the Data Scientist uses the data to build stuff (eg a recommendation engine, or a forecasting system). They can also use more technical skills to aid analysis (nlp, scripting, etc).
Petefine··on Google Maps has removed the collapsed I-5 bridge in WA
strangely, it's currently still there if you zoom in a bit though.
Petefine··on ‘Functional Programming Principles in Scala’ starts today
There are more details available here https://www.coursera.org/course/progfun .
Petefine··on ‘Functional Programming Principles in Scala’ starts today
Agreed. This course (my first into to functional programming) makes it hard to go back to working in Java. Things that can take a lot of code, such as grouping, filtering and aggregating data, can usually be achieved very naturally and concisely in Scala.
Petefine··on Show HN: ChargeBack.cc - Get your money back
In my experience as a merchant, disputes can be very time sensitive (i.e. travel cancellations). On one hand, finding out about a misunderstanding from you (rather than a chargeback fax two months later) may allow a much easier dispute resolution and be so be valuable to a merchant. But on the other hand, customers who cancel/complain by charging back instead of calling the merchant may therefore lose a chargeback because they miss an agreed deadline. Adding your service as a middleman could lead to further missed deadlines.

This is especially true since any good merchant privacy policy/PCI DSS would of course prevent them from discussing anything with you without direct approval from the customer first - and if they did that, they may as well discuss the issue direct anyway.

Lastly, the toughest chargebacks can take months to resolve. Help with that (as a merchant) would be very useful(and so I can imagine you providing a compelling service), but are you really committing to take on a potentially complex issue for the customer? And wouldn't it be a conflict to represent both parties? Still, a tool that eases the admin of chargebacks could be great for both sides...
