PerryCox··on Congress votes to make open government data the default in the United States
It seems like the solution here would be to have a government agency that counts how many government agencies there are. I believe that could be done with an executive order but correct me if I'm wrong.
PerryCox··on PSA: Firefox Nightly now with experimental Wayland support
Fedora made Wayland the default already. [1]

PerryCox··on Are Black Holes Actually Dark Energy Stars?
How likely is this to be the case over Black Holes?

PerryCox··on Shutting Down Google+ for Consumers
Good, the only time I end up there is by mistake when trying to do something else.
PerryCox··on Birds Can See Earth's Magnetic Fields, and Now We Know How That's Possible
I would love to see a simulation of what this type of vision looks like. I think that would be very interesting.
PerryCox··on Our Pungent History: Sweat, Perfume, and the Scent of Death (2016)
And any mention of Perfume wouldn't be complemete without mentioning the Nirvana song Scentless Apprentice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYPDJg9mz1g
PerryCox··on Extreme Bitcoin Mining Aids an Unexpected Revolution in Iceland
Even it's price is questionable. :P
PerryCox··on Coinbase Custody Is Officially Open for Business
Yeah but just because the stock market may have been a poor example, it does not invalidate the rest of his argument. The OP tried to pump and dump, now he's complaining because he got burned.

No such thing as easy money.

PerryCox··on Strapdown.js – Instant and elegant Markdown documents
I've been using this for about 2 years now for my own personal documentation. Now I've switched over to using VS Code and it's Markdown Preview function but if you want to quickly render Markdown as a webpage this is a great tool!
PerryCox··on Released and Certified: Qt Safe Renderer
> It's really incredible how the world of software developed by adults differs from the software developed by kids.

I don't really agree with this sentiment. JavaScript has become one of the better languages to work in these days. I'd much rather work in JavaScript than C++ any day.

PerryCox··on Released and Certified: Qt Safe Renderer
I've always been very impressed by the work of the Qt teams. I don't do much coding in C++ but when I have dabbled in it using Qt feels like a breath of fresh air.
PerryCox··on Michael Jackson Estate Turns the 'Fair Use' Tables on Disney
>Can we please figure out how we can have renewable copyright law which cost over $1,000 a year per copyright item.

No fuck Disney and their reshaping of America's copyright law. For one stupid animated mouse they changed how the entire Public Domain worked. It's not really possible to boycott Disney at this point, but if I could I would because of this issue alone.

PerryCox··on Fizz – experimental language and runtime environment
Yeah the design is really great. It's simple but still has enough color to have somethings stand out a bit.
PerryCox··on Walmart will begin offering to subsidize college tuition for its U.S. workers
I don't think this will have any impact on the price of tuition. The number of employees who will take advantage of these offerings isn't enough to make any impact for colleges.
PerryCox··on Show HN: JQBX – Social Listening Web/Mobile App
I'm using the Web app, looks like it was something on my end causing the problem. All good now, thanks for the quick response.
PerryCox··on Show HN: JQBX – Social Listening Web/Mobile App
I'm having an issue where songs will play but it randomly moves to the next song without finishing the current song. Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a Spotify setting I need to change?
PerryCox··on Adobe Photoshop 1.0.1 Source Code (2013)
Might be time to switch to the one true OS.
PerryCox··on California Opens Investigation into Tesla Workplace Conditions
NDAs are out of control everywhere. I understand they have a time and a place where they are useful, but most of the time they are being abused (ie. Stormy Daniels NDA, etc).
PerryCox··on WhatsApp photo drug dealer caught by 'groundbreaking' work
>Elliott Morris of Redditch, Worcestershire, was sentenced to eight and a half years for conspiracy to supply cannabis.

Great, just great. Let's jail someone for eight fucking years because they are supplying people with Marijuana. That seams reasonable.

PerryCox··on Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, and Apple Object to W3C Fork of DOM Spec
I think it's perfectly fine to post message threads on HN. I would much rather read the source then a summary written by someone else.
PerryCox··on Wall Street’s Big Banks Are Waging a Technological Arms Race
Yeah I really don't understand why Goldman should get a pass like this. They fucked up, they should lose money. Or better yet, errors like this should be reversed or safeguarded against better.
PerryCox··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Are you worried about the recently announced changes that YouTube will start showing more ads to people who only watch music videos? [1]

PerryCox··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
Having worked in a call center for 3 years I can assure you it doesn't take 1 month of intensive training. It takes a variable amount of time to get up to speed depending on how much you are asked to think.

In some call centers, you will be following a script about 90% of the time and that takes very little training. In others you actually have to think and troubleshoot issues, those take a bit more time to get up to speed on.

All that being said, I can assure you that you do not want to work at a call center. I'd take whatever programming job you currently have over the call center I last worked at. For whatever reason, call centers attract the worst kinds of managers in this day and age.

PerryCox··on Capturing Starman from 1M miles away
It doesn't have enough mass to do anything like that. It'll burn up in the atmosphere if it does come back to Earth. Currently projections of it coming back to Earth in the next million years are at 6%.[1]

PerryCox··on The Cost of JavaScript
We live in a world where everyone wants to make Electron apps instead of doing anything in a compiled language or anything other than JavaScript really.

Maybe it's because I've never been a webdev but I just don't understand the fascination with JavaScript. Personally I hate JavaScript any time I have to code in it. Give me literally any other language.

PerryCox··on Vitamin B6 and B12 Supplements Appear to Cause Cancer in Men
I have a feeling that a lot of these supplements are doing more harm than good. I really wish the FDA would step in and regulate the vitamin market the same way they do with normal medicine like Tylenol, etc.
PerryCox··on No, of that I'm innocent
Yeah I've never understood that kind of thinking.
PerryCox··on Chevy Bolt: the First Practical, Mass-Market Electric Vehicle
That wouldn't be a problem for me, the way most people drive and cut in front of me I would easily have one firm deceleration a week.
PerryCox··on Show HN: Resume Worded – Write impactful resumes
Step 1 of having a good resume: copy a good employee's resume. :P
