PerfectElement··on Just how smart is an octopus?
Straw man. I never asked who is better, specially because that word doesn't mean anything on its own. Better than lions in which aspect?

Lions are much better than me at hunting, but on making moral judgements that aim to minimize harm, I think I am better.

If you go down the road of basing your morals on what lions do, you will end up trying to justify why infanticide is a good practice when a father dies. Or why might makes right.

I agree that humans are arrogant. That is pretty evident in the way they treat other species.

PerfectElement··on Just how smart is an octopus?
You are looking at the extrinsic value of a pig, but when it comes to ethics, you should look at its intrinsic value.

A pig wants to live just like a dog does. They want to avoid pain and suffering just like a dog does. They seek comfort just like dogs. The fact that they were bred for a certain human purpose, doesn't change any of that.

PerfectElement··on Just how smart is an octopus?
Are there any other situations where you look up to lions as the compass for your ethical conduct?
PerfectElement··on Just how smart is an octopus?
Are you saying that we shouldn't have any moral consideration towards beings that don't have the cognitive capacity to understand ethics?

If that's the case, do you think it's okay if a human sets a dog on fire just for fun? How about mentally challenged humans? Should their pain be disregarded?

P.S: I didn't down vote.

PerfectElement··on Just how smart is an octopus?
I agree. Some humans have lower cognitive capacity than farm animals, still we wouldn't think it's okay to use mentally challenged humans for food, vivisection, etc.

Focusing on cognitive skills to make ethical judgments is incredibly flawed when you think about it for more than 2 minutes. Specially when you add companion animals into the equation, given that pigs seem to have higher cognitive abilities when compared to dogs[1].

PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What are some non-essential things/habits?
> The "zero carb" community showed me that plants aren't necessary for health

Can you provide any long term studies that support this claim? From all I read about longevity studies, they seem to point in the other direction: high carb, mostly whole plants.

I know that low carb seems to be the popular way of shedding weight fast these days, but I don't see any evidence that they are more efficient than other restrictive diets, like raw vegan, potato diet, rice diet, etc.

PerfectElement··on I made my son cannabis cookies. They changed his life
Brazil alone must have had more than 150,000 deaths attributed to drug trafficking in the last 30 years.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
That's awesome. How much do you make out of affiliates? Was it worth the effort to set it up?

I'm thinking about it for my own business, but I'm on the fence.

PerfectElement··on Request for Startups: Water
Aren't companies like Hampton Creek, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods indirectly working on this? I'd love to see other types of innovation but it seems to me that the lowest hanging fruit is to decrease the demand for animal based foods.
PerfectElement··on COP21: Arnold Schwarzenegger: 'Go part-time vegetarian to protect the planet'
For those who are interested in reducing their animal consumption and need an extra push, I recommend this great talk by Dr. Melanie Joy about carnism, which is the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0VrZPBskpg
PerfectElement··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
Yes, people in Barcelona smoke, grill, have hobbies, bicycles, etc.
PerfectElement··on Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy is linked to autism traits in the child
Here in Canada it is not covered either. I pay $30 each time I want to have it tested.
PerfectElement··on New NIST password guidelines: don't require character types or rotation
Thank you for this. I was looking for something similar the other day.
PerfectElement··on DynamoDB cannot store empty strings
I recommend people look into Azure's DocumentDB. I've used Dynamo before and even though it was fast and reliable, development experience was a pain.

I'm slowly migrating a self-hosted MongoDB database to DocumentDB and things are going pretty well. The only thing missing for me is aggregation and transparent encryption, but they are working on those.

PerfectElement··on Telomeres – Too much of a good thing?
I could never get into it because of his personal beef against veganism (no pun intended).

I think it started when the guys who made Cowspiracy went to his show. After that he went on a mission to find every piece of pseudoscience or blog post that said the animal industry is actually good for the environment, or that plants have feelings, or that vegans were unhealthy, and then went on a Twitter rage against vegans.

It was pretty clear that his open-mindedness was quite limited. The sad thing is that a lot of people think he is a reliable source of information.

PerfectElement··on Parkinson’s disease ‘may start in gut’
I never know what people mean by "carbs". Are they typically referring to refined foods like white bread, white rice, etc? Or are they actually talking about the macronutrient?

When it comes to the macronutrient, high-carb populations eating whole foods are among the healthiests in the world (look at the blue zones, adventists studies, okinawans, etc).

PerfectElement··on Homeschooling as a right, and a needed practical alternative
If you could prove that homeschooling is unhealthy or even worse than public schools, then you could have a point. But now you are just stating your opinion and suggesting that your opinion should be reinforced by the government.

The data shows that homeschoolers perform better than public school students not only academically, but also on measures of social, emotional and psychological development.

PerfectElement··on Logojoy: AI-powered logo creator
At the time I started the project, there seemed to be a new article on top of HN every week telling me how Angular is bad and why I should learn React. Since I had been using Angular for a while on my day job, yes, Angular was the boring choice.
PerfectElement··on Logojoy: AI-powered logo creator
Exactly. I'm making 25k month with a SaaS that was built on boring ASP.NET+SQL Server+Angular 1 because that's what I knew. I host it on Windows because I know how to make it fast and secure. I'm happy I focused all my time on building the features that clients were asking for, instead of learning the latest frameworks or fighting an OS I'm not familiar with.
PerfectElement··on Let's Colonize Titan
> convince everyone on Earth to implement changes that are bad for them, like not eating animal-based foods, with only the promise of "maybe in 200 years your descendants, should your line not be extinct by then, will benefit" as compensation

There are millions of people who chose not to eat animals for different reasons (ethical, health, environmental). And this number is growing faster than ever before, as people become more educated about the issues with animal agriculture.

I don't know why you would classify it as "bad for you". It looks like you are projecting your opinions.

PerfectElement··on Stripe has raised $150M more at a $9B valuation
Perhaps now they will build an Android app?
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What are your thoughts on taking a career sabbatical?
Maybe because you are not being a good cog in the machine. Do anything unusual and you may be seen as a risky hire.

Of course, it depends on the company, but this is what I recall from my corporate years.

PerfectElement··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
I was following you, but the "my self included" part gave it a more serious tone.
PerfectElement··on Visual Studio 2017 Release Candidate
Thanks! I was hoping I would be able to get rid of ReSharper, but the lack of CamelHumps in navigation and in code completion will force me to keep using.
PerfectElement··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
Does it support ASP.NET MVC 5?
PerfectElement··on Quick, Draw
Who said it was supposed to be useful or amazing?
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: How do you handle the business structure and taxes of side projects?
I've been doing the same for a while. SaaS with most customers in the US, but the corporation is in Canada. The only hassle is that 10% of credit card charges fail because banks may block international transactions. So we have to tell clients to call their banks, etc. Not perfect, but better than dealing with cross-border taxes.
PerfectElement··on Team wants to sell lab grown meat in five years (2015)
I would compare it to how it became socially unacceptable to own slaves. The number of individuals who think it is unacceptable to treat animals as commodities, and use them for palate pleasure or convenience is rapidly increasing, and I believe it will hit critical mass in the coming decades; specially as alternatives become more accessible.
PerfectElement··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
How did you reach those people before social media?
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What important truth do very few (informed) people agree with you on?
Sentient animals should not be treated as commodities.
