Pent··on So Long, Reddit
I assert that your refusal to do business with Reddit sends a clear message that it should not be allowed to operate. Your actions are speaking louder than your thoughts here.

Is free speech not worthy enough to be blindly defended?

I think it is.

Pent··on Snowden Document Search
He had access to the NSA servers even after he fled using credentials from other employees. Sorry I can't find a citation but I read about it about 6 months after the initial leak.
Pent··on Ask HN: Anyone else planning to head back to Microsoft?
I find that you can get the same types of programs on Windows, but you have to deal with every UI being a unique snowflake and the (subjectively) high chance of malware from my experience.

Also the installing of CLI programs seems to be really hacky through powershell.

Pent··on “Your password should be committed to memory rather than using a password mgr”
Apple allows replacement keyboards as of iOS8
Pent··on EA Shuts Down ‘SimCity’ and ‘The Sims’ Developer Maxis
Can you expand on the idea of the third instalment syndrome?
Pent··on An unofficial alternative to the HN interface
This is the only way I use hacker news.
Pent··on Day 180: Finished
The entire journey is very inspiring. I wonder what she will do now that it's done? You could take this idea and run with it into other niches, like music or photography projects.
Pent··on Microsoft's Concept Videos From 2000: Why Didn't Ballmer Build Any of It?
Is evernote not a good replacement? OCR searching in notes etc
Pent··on This site is down because the owner stiffed the web designer
This is brilliant marketing regardless of the negative press
Pent··on Show HN: TextBlob, Natural language processing made simple in Python
I would be visiting lobsters if it wasn't invite-only, I am not convinced that a system like that guarantees quality content over something more elegant like weighted votes.
Pent··on Show HN: See what the best startups in the world are using
There is a typo on the Braintree company information page. Right at the beginning.
Pent··on Tools for Switching from Windows to Mac Development
You get really good at using cmd+q on everything
Pent··on Tools for Switching from Windows to Mac Development
I love it for visor mode. Basically in the preferences you can set it up to toggle the terminal (slides down from top of screen..) with a global hotkey. It manages themes nice as well.
Pent··on Never Say WordPress When Selling a Web Design Project
You are selling them the result, not how you got there.
Pent··on Foursquare raises $41 million Series D round
Anecdotally, myself and several friends use Foursquare fanatically. Though I've been waiting forever for Foursquare to do something more with the service itself.
Pent··on Gmail: 9 years and counting
I guess it's subjective then because I like the new compose and how I can refer to other emails/do searches in the same tab.
Pent··on Why Purdue should remove 'This is Engineering' viral video
The HN title is a much more interesting conversation than the articles
Pent··on Comcast injecting JS
Comcast is not available in Canada.
Pent··on When Game Development Stinks
obviously it was not gorgeous enough...
Pent··on Are We An Unjust People?
I think that when responding to these events, we should keep in mind that we all make mistakes. At this point I feel that Adria made a mistake, sometimes mistakes cause bad things to happen and I hope she moves forward and learns from her actions. Everyone is human and she didn't deserve all the snap judgements leading to hatred.
Pent··on Don't be mean, it's stupid
Good observations! Hacker News was indeed before Designer News, but there have been many iterations of this style of social news over the years.
Pent··on The best programmers are the quickest to Google
You can't be a good computer scientist if all you do is search for solutions using Google, but you can be a pretty good product shipper.
Pent··on John Carmack Argues Against Native Linux Games
Well to be fair, some data is better than no data, regarding how financially viable linux is for gaming.
Pent··on 2D Game Art for Programmers
I'm a big fan of sketching in Painttool SAI, it feels much easier to use than Photoshop http://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
Pent··on Evernote 5 for Mac
Windows 8 providing a better experience is pretty subjective as I don't think it does.
Pent··on Who inherits your iTunes library when you die?
An extension of this is, will we see more wills with login credentials to different services? Is that even legal to pass down to someone after you die? For example you include your lastpass/1password account in your will.
Pent··on Hackers Steal, Encrypt Health Records and Hold Data for Ransom
I'm assuming everything because the story is so vague. I'm thinking an employee accidentally opened a malware executable with ransom-ware and suddenly it's an elaborate personalized hack in the press.
Pent··on At Defcon, hackers get their own private cell network: Ninja Tel
The only thing I could think of when I read that article is; how long until Coca-Cola sends a C&D against them for likeness of Ninja-Cola? Very interesting otherwise.
Pent··on IAmA Patent Examiner on reddit
Valve's Steam games checkout. Does iTunes qualify as well?
Pent··on Real Tales of Learning Computer Science as a High School Girl
It took me awhile to figure out that I actually needed to click the photo to see the stories. I tried all the other links first.
