Pedro_Ribeiro··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
What is sad about this?
Pedro_Ribeiro··on The EU could be scanning your chats by October 2025
Clearly by installing a wrongthink iron dome around the world!
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Cursor IDE support hallucinates lockout policy, causes user cancellations
Is it just me or has there been a wave of delusional people on Hacker News completely neglecting new advancements in technology? The two most common technologies I see having this type of discourse are AI coding and containers.

Either everyone here is a low level quantum database 5D graphics pipeline developer with a language from the future that AI hasn't yet learned, or some people are in denial.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on Postgres Language Server: Initial Release
This is awesome. Does anyone know if it'll possible to integrate it with tools like SQLX (Rust's pseudo-ORM) to get type hinting when writing in-like SQL code within Rust, or just have it work when I'm writing SQL within a simple Python script? That would truly be next-gen.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Show HN: Seven39, a social media app that is only open for 3 hours every evening
I think you're just describing BeReal, which went viral but kind of died out.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Obscure islands I find interesting
Incredible site! Thanks for posting.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
It's pretty clear he wasn't defending the accusations and simply stating the other comment was clearly a strawman.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Does that include R&D?

If running ChatGPT costs $1B/y and they make $3B/y on it, tacking on the cost of R&D on top doesn't seem very fair.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on Ask HN: Are YC startups *actually* hiring?
HN has two moderators but the YC Job Opening ads are not just part of HN, they're part of YC as a whole.

I expect YC to do due diligence if one of their companies receives several reports that they heard no replies (it's not that many companies). If it's found to be more than hearsay, they lose HN ad privelleges.

---

I wouldn't do a startup but I certainly could see myself creating a bunch of fake developer profiles of varying skill levels and sending them to companies en masse. If they don't reply to anything even though they have had a job opening, they get placed on the (public) name & shame list.

Would also be interesting to automatically keep track of which job openings a company has and how long they've been open for.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on Ask HN: Are YC startups *actually* hiring?
Don't you think part of the reason companies prefer that you reach out to them is that they want people specifically interested in them? Though it could be the case that the job spam is so fucked that that no longer works as an accurate cutoff.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Ask HN: Are YC startups *actually* hiring?
I believe HN is a high quality forum that enforces high quality standards, there is no reason this shouldn't be a thing. Companies that advertise here should be held accountable.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Show HN: DeepSeek My User Agent
Now that I think about it, I don't think I had laughed at an LLM text yet. Non-ironically pretty cool!
Pedro_Ribeiro··on How to delete your Facebook account
And what is that? Maybe I'm not deep enough into HN to know about this.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
Aren't videogames where you consume drugs for gameplay boosts banned there? I always found that weird for a first world country.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Dear friend, you have built a Kubernetes
Can you elaborate on other things you think Kubernetes gets wrong? Asking out of curiosity because I haven't delved deep into it.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Dear sir, you have built a compiler (2022)
Having recently built 90% of a compiler by mistake, I felt like this post was written specifically about me. Hilarious writing, congrats to the author.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Hey, sorry I didn't see this comment earlier.

I think there are a few historical reasons:

- We are only 50 years out of a dictatorship

- We were late to industrialism

- Our main business sectors are bad (tourism, agriculture, textiles)

And a few law/cultural reasons:

- Lots of buroucracy and inefficiency + high taxes means making a business here is impossible (I've sold a company that I incorporated here so I'd know ahah)

- Bad education and lack of incentives for companies to be here means younger talent leaves for greener pastures across EU and the US. We call it "brain drain".

- Because all the young talented people keep leaving, the only remaining people are low-income workers or old people (we're a very old country). Old people keep voting the same corrupt parties into power so nothing ever changes.

- There's a big "crab mentality" about people who are wealthy being evil.

Extra:

The party that played the biggest role in getting rid of our dictatorship was the communist party (that's literally their name, Partido Comunista Português), so in Portugal communism is good, and capitalism is bad.

There's lots of talk about taxing the rich here, but the truth is that there are no rich. We only have ONE billionare. If were to tax 100% of our rich we wouldn't be able to run the government for more than a couple of weeks.

What are the advantages of using Django over FastAPI in 2024?
Pedro_Ribeiro··on US Senate to Revive Software Patents with PERA Bill Vote on Thursday
What do you mean by "things"? I don't believe patents have done any good what so ever.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Trump wins presidency for second time
In Portugal the same two parties have been consistentently fucking up the economy for the past 30 years with no end in sight. It's comically bad.

They then announce pensions for majority groups like the elderly and get voted into power by the same groups they are financing.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on EU AI Act is much worse than you think
This is more of a vent, but I can't focus on the implementation because it has never improved in my lifetime, so I'd rather the government get out of my way.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on EU AI Act is much worse than you think
The issue isn't with the systems not being able to survive those steps, it's how long they take - it's killing inovation and it's one of the reasons Europe stays behind. You can't expect us to have an AI startup boom if every minute thing must be passed through regulators and assessements and representatives (these things take months to years).

I've also had a startup related to compliance in the EU and it's mindboggling how poorly these regulations are actually implemented and checked. It also takes months to set up a meeting with the responsible authorities to clear up any doubts, only for them to tell you that they don't really know either.

Excusing entrepreneurship, we also take way longer to get features like the improved voice capabilities of ChatGPT. This is a smaller thing, but AI has had a major impact on my productivity and I'd rather not be 3 months behind American developers on everything.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on NASA freezes Starliner missions
Airplane companies are worth surprisingly less than expected for how crucial and important they seem at first glance.

The market is also not as big as you'd think.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on Sony, Ubisoft scandals lead to California ban on deceptive digital goods sales
The gaming industry is not ready for that discussion yet, but you absolutely should be able to.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
Is that all you got from the quote?

"was unfortunately complicated by the CrowdStrike incident, extreme weather and other unexpected logistical and communications issues"

"extreme weather"

"communications issues"

Are you doing this on purpose? I'm not even a fan of the guy but this type of out-of-context taking just hurts discourse. It's the type of thing I came to HN to avoid.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on Starlink U-turns, will block X in Brazil after all
In Turkey this wouldn't fly for even a second. He thinks he can make an example out of Brazil (and it's clearly striking a nerve even if it ends up not working out.)
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Starlink U-turns, will block X in Brazil after all
The representative was threatned with arrest, what did you expect them to do? Hire another one so they could also be threatned?
Pedro_Ribeiro··on Starlink U-turns, will block X in Brazil after all
He's in the wrong morally or in terms of following the law?

When the supreme court is the victim, the prosecutor, the law maker, and the law aprover all at once, the only thing you need to do to break the law is not do as they say.

Pedro_Ribeiro··on SpaceX Pulls Employees from Brazil, Discourages Travel There
The freezing happened BEFORE the block order, to my knowledge.
Pedro_Ribeiro··on SpaceX Pulls Employees from Brazil, Discourages Travel There
FYI SpaceX and Starlink were not involved in this feud at all until the judge froze Starlink's bank account just for the connection to Elon. In reality the one that decided to involve SpaceX was the judge.
