Peanuts99··on What reversing, modernising old games tells us about the economic impact of AI
I built a pen plotter and my biggest challenge was converting and previewing the GCode for plotter images. Recently though I've build a huge toolbox of tools with Codex using spare usage and it's an absolute game changer. Good use of it for sure.
Peanuts99··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Bit flips from cosmic radiation. Pretty common.
Peanuts99··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
If a small business is modifying the product and not telling the eventual customer they've done so how is that not fraud? I don't want to buy a Raspberry Pi with a memory chip from who knows who which might have not passed QA modified by people who may or may not do a decent job at soldering it to the board.
Peanuts99··on How to buy a good car for $1000
I think you greatly overestimate how many 8-10 year old EVs will actually require replacement batteries. Barring a few models with poor engineering choices, most cars will still have 80% of their capacity after 10 years and won't have the downsides of having a 10 year old ICE engine with a variable record of maintenance.
Peanuts99··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
Isn't this usually because people don't like big jets flying over their houses.
Peanuts99··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
Have you got any proof that anyone has been arrested specifically for a social media post?

The most common case is Lucy Connolly, who was arrested for inciting racial hatred and pleaded guilty to the crime which carries a prison sentence.

Or are you just a random non UK citizen who has been reading disinformation on social media?

Peanuts99··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Merchants aren't going cash only to sell your data, they're doing it because it's expensive to handle cash and makes their taxes a whole lot more troublesome too.
Peanuts99··on GPT-6 Astra on OpenRouter
If you've got access to an Azure subscription and you don't pay the bill personally.
Peanuts99··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
What's to stop someone spoofing a GPS signal during that fix?
Peanuts99··on Review: Chuwi's $449 Unibook laptop is a funhouse-mirror MacBook Neo
This is mostly a solved problem. My ThinkPad track pad is as good as any Mac.
Peanuts99··on Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac: The future of supercars is combustion engines
The difference being Swiss watches are elegantly engineered pieces of art whereas internal combustion engines of any kind are essentially just rube goldberg machines that we have collectively normalised as a society.
Peanuts99··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
A single bus journey is $20? That's insanely expensive.
Peanuts99··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
I didn't think they'd completed the move yet, it's only partially on Azure - which to be fair could be another problem in itself.
Peanuts99··on South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North
Perhaps driven by the very low likelihood of anything positive coming out of this.
Peanuts99··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
It costs money to campaign, it's not a seat any other party had a chance to win and it sends a clear message from the other parties that the whole stunt was a waste of everyone's time.
Peanuts99··on My server is a phone now
Some of those SFP cards can use quite a bit of energy on their own. They're not designed with energy efficiency in mind.

I've got an Optiplex with an i5 and two hard drives and that idles around 12W when idling.

Peanuts99··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
I take it that you'll be pleased when a data center is proposed to be built behind your house then yes?
Peanuts99··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
You might have poor quality incoming AC. Capacitors in the power supplies will be under more stress if you regularly have over/under voltages or small spikes and surges.
Peanuts99··on GDID Windows – Cut the tracker that follows you even under VPN
You can do the same with the GDID, it's stored in the registry.
Peanuts99··on DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16
Not in this case, but if you aren't building it to put humans in it at all, you can build it with higher requirements in mind. Traditionally there's no point building a plane that can withstand much over 9g.
Peanuts99··on Lobste.rs is now running on SQLite
I've got a few planks over a ditch in my garden. The bridge only needs to be designed for the load and then some. In this case, this seems to work just fine.
Peanuts99··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
I recently got a trial for the Google AI Pro subscription and it burned through a week's in a single prompt. Quite impressive for sure.
Peanuts99··on Goes-19 weather satellite enters Safe Hold mode
The counter to this is the UK.Gov website. Very simple and basic, modern (maybe) but very accessible. Government websites should put accessibility over everything else.
Peanuts99··on Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers (2022)
The more I learn about telegram, the sketchier it seems.
Peanuts99··on Why it's so difficult to produce American-made medical gloves
Every glove is tested for conductivity to ensure it's not got tiny holes in, you can't do that with 'glue gloves'.
Peanuts99··on Ask HN: Why isn't Google indexing information about the AT Protocol?
Doesn't DDG use Bing?
Peanuts99··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Are they actually worse than businesses though? The internet, jet engines.. in fact whole swaiths of technology have been created under governments not enterprises. This just feels like an economic concept people blindly accept.
Peanuts99··on Ryanair passenger sucked toward broken window after midair engine failure
Ryanair has a pretty high safety record, they fly modern, well maintained planes because their margins are lower and they make them up in volume.
Peanuts99··on President pardons 9 for Clean Air violations for 'fixing their car'
Buses can carry 100 people at a time so have a far larger social utility. Besides, most are going electric.
Peanuts99··on “Beyond the limit”: Satellites and mirrors in space pose threat to the night sky
But that's just what OP is saying, you can 'refuse' to be limited to nature, but nature will have other plans for you.
