PaulsWallet··on As an artist I am concerned about AI image generation
There is a response to this tweet where someone says "stop gatekeeping art" which while I understand the gist of what they mean, seems like a weird thing to say to console someone who is concerned they are about to be automated out of a job.
PaulsWallet··on Ask HN: Any way to ban GPT-4 and others from harvesting my content and data?
I believe most people respect robots.txt on your site. If they don't I don't think there is anything you can do about it but in general most companies do. At least most companies I've had personal experience with.
PaulsWallet··on Will Intel's AXG division survive Pat Gelsinger’s axe?
I have to believe that Intel's GPU division will be fine just because I refuse to believe that any executive over at Intel is short sighted enough to believe that Intel was going to leap frog AMD and Nvidia or even make a profit within the next 3-5 years. It took AMD years to get it right with Ryzen and AMD still hasn't had a "Ryzen moment" with their GPU. The fact that Intel's GPU can even compete with AMD and Nvidia is a feat of engineering magic. Intel should just take the L and make it a loss leader and grind it out for the long haul.
PaulsWallet··on I Stopped Reading Hacker News Comments
What does this even mean? The average blog post I read on the front page has much more effort put into it than the average hacker news comment.
PaulsWallet··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
I absolutely use SMS. I use Android and don't have Facebook or Whatsapp so if you want to text me you are gonna use SMS.
PaulsWallet··on Learning to Love Myself
If people loved their parents more than they loved themselves they would never move away.
PaulsWallet··on Learning to Love Myself
> Being ok with rejection, well more than that, accepting that rejection is a mechanism that guides me out of situations that aren’t right for me

I think this an important but incomplete statement. Rejection means that situation wasn't right for you but the question I have to ask myself every time is was it because I wasn't ready or good enough? If I get rejected from a job I really wanted, it would be easy to pat myself on the back and say "it wasn't a good fit" but the reality might be it wasn't a good fit because my skills weren't up to snuff. This is where having a kind inner voice helps. Don't avoid the reality that you need to improve but don't berate yourself.

PaulsWallet··on Capital One enters enterprise B2B software, new data management SaaS
Surprising that a bank is going in this direction but not surprising that it was Capital One. They have historically been pretty technology forward in comparison to other US banks. They are one of the only US banks that provide pretty pain-free APIs to the public.
PaulsWallet··on How I regained concentration and focus
If you are talking about default subreddits then sure but there are some great communities on reddit that I think are great pieces of the internet. A lot of which I'm sure exist because people don't need 100 different forum accounts to access them. Also generally, I see no difference between reddit and Hacker News except Hacker News drips with a unique brand of elitist smarm you can't get elsewhere.
PaulsWallet··on How far can you go by train in 5h?
You are assuming you only have 2 choices, single-family home or apartment. That's a very American perspective because most of America only allows those two but in a proper city you have townhomes, duplexes, casitas, bungalows and many more options that aren't just apartments. However, most of American is zoned exclusively for single-family homes and not mixed-use so like the parent comment said, you don't get benefits of proper density which includes many home types.
PaulsWallet··on How far can you go by train in 5h?
> you can't play your own music

Wear headphones.

PaulsWallet··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
This is such a weirdly aggressive comment. I'm not saying you have to trust Facebook but there are much better ways to shake Oculus users down for money than risk getting caught watching people on the toilet through their VR cameras.
PaulsWallet··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
I talked to someone who used to be at Facebook's reality lab and they said they have very VERY strict controls on user data and no one just has remote access through Oculus cameras including devs but reputation is hard to shake when tied to a company like Facebook.
PaulsWallet··on Self-Dialogue as a Journaling Strategy
I highly recommend the book "Your Head is a Houseboat" to anyone who wants to start journaling but doesn't really know how to get into it. It is a very approachable, almost child-like introduction to your brain and the voices in your head.
PaulsWallet··on Coding Mistake Made Intel GPUs 100X Slower in Ray Tracing
> Launching with broken drivers certainly did not help.

I get what you mean but people seem to be forgetting that Ryzen launched in an absolutely abysmal state and it took them a few iterations to get to the industry leader that we have today. I think Intel taking the loss leader perspective on this and essentially using people willing to buy as beta testers will pan out for them in the long run. They have been more transparent about it than AMD was with Ryzen or than Nvidia has been with literally anything which I appreciate.

PaulsWallet··on Coding Mistake Made Intel GPUs 100X Slower in Ray Tracing
I'm not one to shy away from dunking on Intel and they very often deserve it but I feel that Intel is getting a lot of undue shit in regards to Arc. I'm actually very excited for Arc and will probably buy one to play with if the price is right if for no other reason that Intel's Linux support has in the past been pretty solid.
PaulsWallet··on Zettelkasten 101 Series: What Is a Fleeting Note?
I'm going to disagree. All of my fleeting notes go in 1 place so I can look at them all later. Having them in my phone, notebook, napkin in the kitchen, etc etc is not ideal. I'm certainly not going to forgot what I need to write down if I just need to go to the other room and grab my notepad.
PaulsWallet··on /dev/null: Anti-Cheat Kernel Driver (2020)
Because games are generally thought of as harmless. Most people aware a rogue piece of productivity software or something can cause them issues. Games, for whatever reason, don't get that same consideration.
PaulsWallet··on /dev/null: Anti-Cheat Kernel Driver (2020)
> This isn’t giving us any surveillance capability we didn’t already have.

I think this is an important line. Regardless of how people feel about anti-cheating efforts, I don't believe many people realize how much access games already have to their system to the point where it's kind of a miracle there aren't more malicious games out in the wild.

PaulsWallet··on South Carolina bill outlaws websites that tell how to get an abortion
> You're conflating a lot of things here, none of which are really related.

Speaking of things that aren't related. I don't see how those things being legal is even somewhat related to making abortion illegal or making it legal to bounty hunt women. You're going to have to explain that connection to me a bit more.

PaulsWallet··on Casio F91 smart watch reboot
> Why spend a ton of resources supporting every operating system and hardware combination...

Making it so Android users can update their bluetooth headphones is not supporting every hardware combination. Adding a OSD to your monitor so people don't need OS X specific software to change their monitor settings is not supporting every operating system or hardware combination.

PaulsWallet··on Casio F91 smart watch reboot
> As a side note why won't apple make it's watch work well with android

This is the way Apple works. You don't own enough products so you aren't worthy of full functionality. Last time I checked you can't update Airpods firmware without another Apple device nor can you change settings on the pro XDR display without a device running macOS.
