Paul_S··on National Center for Home Food Preservation
Both. Especially fermenting often resulted in barely edible pickles. Nowadays the only fermentation I do is alcohol. I leave the rest to my wife who's picked it up more successfully than me. I help with pasturising although there's not much to do now we bought a pasturising cooker.
Paul_S··on National Center for Home Food Preservation
I have wasted an obscene amount of food trying to preserve it. This is the kind of skill that used to be learned at home when you were a kid but as I was growing up this was only passed onto daughters - us boys were taught different skills and my wife grew up in the city. Trying to learn this from books is terrible. Most of the time I call up my mom to teach me over a video call but some things are easier taught in person, especially ones that require manual manipulation of things.

I worry that enormous amount of nuance is lost when transmitting skills through written down form instead of in person.

Paul_S··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
That's exactly what I meant. If people agree to the rules you don't need to waste resources policing them.
Paul_S··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
Yes, plenty of cameras on motorways. I set my cruise control on motorways and ignore them so maybe that's why it didn't spring to mind. But the article is about local roads and at least where I drive I never see any. I drive in Europe occasionally and I think they have more cameras on local roads but again, it's my experience and not stats. I don't drive around London so maybe my experience is not representative.

I have only seen a mobile speed camera van once in my life. Even that was signposted. If you want to avoid tickets and keep speeding it's super easy. I don't see people speeding. Again, I imagine it might be different around London but isn't everything different over there?

Paul_S··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
I should clarify, there are cameras on motorways but hardly any on local roads where the 20 speed limit is used. Also, all cameras are signposted and there are obvious lines on the road so you can see exactly where the measurement is taken.
Paul_S··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
Wow, do I feel silly now but in my defence I'm talking from experience, not having checked the stats. Maybe all those cameras are in London because wherever I drive I only see speed cameras on motorways.
Paul_S··on Wales' 20mph speed limit: How has the first month gone?
UK over the years has been destroying something immensely valuable that you can't get back quickly. For example, there are barely any speed cameras on local roads in the UK (compared to other European countries) and yet almost everyone drives under the limit. It's the same with police not needing guns. I think people just don't understand how valuable (and unusual) this is.

Edit: As has been pointed out to me, there are a lot of speed cameras in the UK, but half of them are in the London area where I don't drive (and the rest are mostly motorways) which is why I had that impression.

Paul_S··on The Diorama Engine
They conceived, built and delivered production units, all the while pyra has been "almost there" so I think they did OK. For a super niche product I think they did great.
Paul_S··on Microsoft CEO testifies that Google’s power in search is ubiquitous
I think Google is not going to keep its monopoly.

Last Saturday I was searching for something on Google and not getting anything and just for laughs I tried bing. I have been using it for second opinion since. And I don't think bing got any better, but my god has Google got a lot worse.

Paul_S··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
That is literally what we've been doing in the UK for decades. It works!
Paul_S··on Investigating intentional cranial modification in 3rd to 7th century CE Japan
How does a flat head help you to trade? They obviously flattened their heads in order to be able to squeeze through narrower cracks. At least that's my engineer's interpretation.
Paul_S··on UK flight chaos could last for days, airline passengers warned
Any idea what happened to the traffic control system? Have they "modernised" it?
Paul_S··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
I found it curious that you can ask chat gpt to talk to you in toki pona.

Explain in toki pona what is toki pona.

ChatGPT: toki pona li toki pi toki lili. ona li pali e nimi mute lili tan toki mute. ona li jo e nimi luka wan e nimi tu. nimi luka li jo e nimi tu lon toki mute. nimi mute li ken toki e sitelen sin sama nimi luka. nimi lili mute li pona tawa toki pi toki pona. sina ken toki e ni: "toki pona li toki tawa pi toki lili."

Can someone who speaks toki pona tell us if he's doing a good job?

Paul_S··on I would rather see my books get pirated than this
I would rather have your books done this to them (whatever the "this" is) than have a popup jump up at the me after reading 10 lines before I can even figure out what you're complaining about.

And I already have ublock origin enabled so congrats on defeating its filters.

Paul_S··on Tim Hunkin (Secret Lives of Machines)
I love the website. Sometimes simple is enough.
Paul_S··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
That's not what the data shows. You can't compare lifetime partners of people who lived their full lives to teenagers. If you compare number of partners in the last year (prior to survey) then promiscuity had been steadily increasing since it began to be measured.
Paul_S··on DOJ drops Campaign Finance Charge against SBF
We are getting close to communism levels of cynicism about the system. Under communism, at the end of it, no one believed in it, especially the ones in power. The problem is, the next step is when you stop pretending you believe in it and it collapses.
Paul_S··on Google Web Environment Integrity Is the New Microsoft Trusted Computing
I think I have become a web accelerationist. I hope this newest bit of mendacity succeeds and we abandon this flaming disaster that the modern internet will become. The tiny (just depressing how tiny) subset of its useful functionality can be reimplemented in any other system that might come take its place in minutes.
Paul_S··on The Rise and Fall of the Chief Diversity Officer
How do the companies justify spending money on diversity executives to their shareholders? Genuinely asking. Do they say it will make them more money?
Paul_S··on Diablo
Back when Diablo was released it wasn't uniformly praised like it is today. Aside from caricaturised RPG fans' scoffing there was a lot of criticism of its what we call today streamlining and what we used to call dumbing down. Interestingly back then there wasn't yet the research or even the vocabulary of addictive dopamine hit mechanics but there was already a not very well articulated feeling of a hamster wheel experience.

But yes, I did play Diablo 1 to completion. With all 3 characters.

Paul_S··on Chiptune.app
I had a look again and you are right. What I was listening to was a mod remix of a sid tune. Do I feel silly now.
Paul_S··on Chiptune.app
The folder structure is such a mess that I thought it only does midi but I used the search bar and was amazed by the crisp SID rendition. Should add a filter toggle to remove all the midi spam.
Paul_S··on AMC Says More Than 20k Have Booked 'Barbie'-'Oppenheimer' Double Features
Just get a dolby Atmos sound system for your living room and save money in the long term. You can watch any movies you want back to back at any time. Get a big enough couch and you can invite your friends.
Paul_S··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
This could work if it was community run and not for profit. A business running this has the wrong incentives.
Paul_S··on Sleeping through the technical interview (2022)
Sleep sort - invented by 4chan.

The rest of the short story also reads like it came straight from r9k

Paul_S··on Goodreads has no incentive to be good
I never understood that concept. What is wrong with having your own library? I have about 200 books on my shelves I haven't read and any time I want to I can find something interesting. It's s luxury but not anything I'm embarrassed about. Makes more sense than keeping the books I've already read on my bookshelves.
Paul_S··on Ask HN: How much do you work, what's your salary and how experienced are you?
Just use levels fyi or glass door - the self reported salaries here will be the self-selected top of scale. And given how vague the question is the information you get here will be useless for anything but reinforcing whatever you already thought.
Paul_S··on Goodreads has no incentive to be good
Goodreads is only good (eh, decent?) as a database of books you've read. All the other functionality is pointless and or broken. The recommendation system is a joke and is obviously used to promote nonsense instead of giving you personalised recommendations.
Paul_S··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive – Enclosure
I didn't realise this was marketed to general public. Every distro and their dog supports arm.

Anyway, I thought Windows runs on arm now? Although honestly, nowadays general public runs everything in a browser - why do they still need Windows?

Paul_S··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive – Enclosure
No ARM option? Also, the battery compartment is tiny. Put the two together and I'm guessing this is not going to run for long.

Love the idea though. If I ever buy a laptop again it will be one of those.
