Panini_Jones··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
> Apart from Quest being a standalone device, it was just an iteration on the original Rift

In that it's a VR device, yes. But it's a standalone headset with Inside Out tracking. Many people didn't think this was possible.

> And it was another company they bought, and I'd be more inclined to give credits to the Occulus team than to Facebook.

A significant amount of FB employees developed this headset. It is Oculus is Facebook now.

Panini_Jones··on Fortnite seems to have been removed from the Play Store as well
Quick question: Do console developers like XBox and the Switch take ~30% cuts of every game sold for their platform? Genuinely curious.
Panini_Jones··on Fortnite seems to have been removed from the Play Store as well
> Epic did not design their own hardware, their own silicon, build entire global supply chains, design UX, etc. Apple and Google did. Do they not deserve a cut?

Where did the $1k I spent on my phone go?

Panini_Jones··on Uber and Lyft ordered by California judge to classify drivers as employees
I think Uber can also 'terminate' you if you choose to work for a competitor. IANAL, but if I work for Google, Google most certainly wouldn't let me work at Facebook as well even if I was spending 8 hours a day working for each.
Panini_Jones··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
Facebook came out with the Oculus Quest last year which is hugely innovative.
Panini_Jones··on Google to keep employees home until summer 2021
I am not a fan of WFH. One thing I do wonder though is, now that I've bought thousands of dollars worth of home office and gym equipment, why would I want to forfeit that? I suspect many employees who sprung for the HM chair and the standing desks won't want to leave those unused at home very easily.
Panini_Jones··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
> I don’t know why reddit insisted on that.

It's likely that they discovered through A/B testing that they could improve their metrics and monetization strategy this way better than the original UI. Reddit doesn't exist to satisfy us, it exists to make money.

Panini_Jones··on Int. students may need to leave US if classes are 100% Remote
Moreover, some classes use online services like GDocs. GDocs aren't accessible from certain countries.
Panini_Jones··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
How does an ISP do ad injection? Where are the ads shown that originate from the ISP?
Panini_Jones··on Facebook Novi: Wallet for Libra Digital Currencies
Can you elaborate on the consequences? Genuinely curious.

Panini_Jones··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
I wonder what the previous CFO is thinking right now. I believe he tried to take it to an IPO earlier but Chesky disagreed with him. This is rumor of course.
Panini_Jones··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
Doesn't Airbnb use Ruby because Twitter uses Ruby?
Panini_Jones··on Libra still needs more baking
Hmm. That makes more sense now.
Panini_Jones··on Facebook, Google to be forced to share ad revenue with Australian media
That's what their comment said.
Panini_Jones··on LightSpeed: Rewriting Messenger’s codebase for a faster, smaller, simpler app
You should call Facebook and tell them to fire the Messenger org because you have a great 5 person team that can do it for them.
Panini_Jones··on Waymo’s Hiring Binge
How are you measuring this other than the hours-spent-at-desk metric? Quality and quantity of what output?
Panini_Jones··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
> 3. The EU will lose at-least one more member nation after the United Kingdom leaves.

Why?

Panini_Jones··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
Facebook is? What rate does Facebook pay and how much are these Cognizant employees getting paid?
Panini_Jones··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
> Their initial equity grant has no cliff and the signing bonus was massive for somebody two years out of school: $75,000 cash in first paycheck.

* Google got rid of the cliff too. * The $75K sign-on bonus is nothing new. These are not signals that we're having trouble hiring now.

> However I ultimately turned it down because of ethical concerns about working there combined with a sense that people would not approve of my job choice. I.e. even if I don't find what they're doing ethically questionable (and I do, although I don't think they're so bad), I didn't want to have to explain myself or defend them to everybody when I mentioned where I worked. Just my two cents as somebody who was one of the 50% of candidates who turned down the job.

Honestly, working at FB as a SWE is awesome. Like beyond awesome. If impressing other people is what you're optimizing for, you do you, but just know that you're missing out big time.

Panini_Jones··on The humble receipt gets a redesign
I'm actually not certain what behavior it's meant to incentivize in the 'useful' case.
Panini_Jones··on Facebook shares shoot up after strong Q4 earnings despite data breach
.. Are you serious?
Panini_Jones··on Toronto adds more tech jobs than Silicon Valley in past 5 years
Facebook doesn't have an engineering office in Toronto.
Panini_Jones··on Facebook Gave Some Companies Access to Additional Data About Users’ Friends
> With this and previous revelations, we now know that those claims are completely false.

I don't see how Facebook is selling data. What do you mean?

Panini_Jones··on What makes us Red Hat
The software is free, is it not? Red Hat's business model is subscription based.
Panini_Jones··on DOJ Cautions Employers Seeking H-1B Visas Not to Discriminate Against US Workers
> H1Bs are used as a cheap source of labor and nothing more.

Really? Even at companies like Google and FB?

Panini_Jones··on Programmers should not call themselves engineers (2015)
Can you link to the U of T job with the cert requirement?
Panini_Jones··on Programmers should not call themselves engineers (2015)
> The intention is, that when someone calls them self an engineer, you can have confidence in both their technical ability and moral obligations.

I thought the intention was that, even if someone didn't have confidence in both their technical ability and moral obligations, it didn't matter. An engineer is a person whose technical decisions are literally protected by law - if they decide to not sign off on something, they don't have to convince anyone and can't face consequences for it (ahem, Quebec bridge[1]). What you're suggesting is just a byproduct of confidence in the system.

Panini_Jones··on Top Hat Raises $22M to Go After Pearson, McGraw-Hill
My negative comments on the reputation of the company come from 3rd hand sources (possibly even more hands). I'm glad you're finding your experience to be fruitful; I will add it as a datapoint to my understanding of the perceived reputation of the company.

Do U of T students like the software TopHat produces?

Panini_Jones··on Top Hat Raises $22M to Go After Pearson, McGraw-Hill
They have a reputation for being a bad employer for interns (culture/mentorship) and also producing bad software. Apparently, many of the students (not including myself) have actually used the software and not enjoyed the experience.
