PanMan··on Show HN: Drop-in SQS replacement based on SQLite
This depends on your definition of few.. but SQS costs us more than the servers handling the messages… It’s cheap until you do billions of messages…
PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Quatt.io | Amsterdam, Netherlands | Full-time | Hybrid/ONSITE | https://quatt.io | climate tech

I'm head of Software at Quatt, a quickly growing startup/scaleup building heatpumps to help fix climate change. Heating and cooling is 50% of all energy used in the EU. Heat pumps save 10 times more CO2 for each Euro spent on them compared to electric cars. We're building the most accessible and smartest heatpump on the market. Our product is live, we have thousands of customers, tons of data, and I really like the impact we're having. I'm currently looking for a few roles for my department, as we believe having the best software will allow us to have the best product. Our backend and frontend is Typescript.

 * Senior Backend developer (Typescript)
 * Medior QA / test engineer
 * Senior app developer (React native)
 * Medior fullstack developer
Now is a great time to join, as the software team is still small but growing quickly. These and other vacancies are on our careers page: https://www.quatt.io/working-at-quatt

PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
We don't have many internships planned right now but do welcome open applicants.
PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Nope, sorry, not for now. That's the hybrid/onsite part...
PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Which canal? :)
PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Certainly! We have quite a few nationalities in the company, I think over 20. However, for these roles we look for hybrid people, so working part of the week from our (Amsterdam) office.

PanMan··on 10 > 64, in QR Codes
Cool article. What I've wondered, and the article doesn't touch on: In "normal" usage (not damaged QR codes), what's the best error correction to use, with a fixed output size (eg a sticker)? Using a higher level, results in more bytes, and thus a larger QR, which, when printed, results in smaller details. Is it better to have a low error correction, resulting in large blobs, or to have higher error correction, resulting in smaller details, which I guess will be harder to scan, but more room for correction?

PanMan··on Is Tableau Dead?
Thanks for the graph, but I'm looking for others that are "as far left" as heroku - eg offer db stuff (like elements), review apps, etc. I haven't seen that yet, but will take another look at Render!
PanMan··on Is Tableau Dead?
I agree.. but I'm surprised how little Heroku alternatives have popped up yet.. There is new contestants, mostly focussed on more global deploys, but no "Heroku but maintained" that I know of.. yet.
PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)

PanMan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2023)
We currently don't publicly publish pay ranges (but do have these ranges "public internally"). The range depends on the seniority, and can be discussed in a first contact with us. We do benchmark our pay ranges regularly to be competitive.

PanMan··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
It surprised me the hacking toolkit came in a JBL speaker - I guess they reverse engineered that as well, flashed it with custom firmware, and it had most of the hardware needed for this hack?
PanMan··on Show HN: Customizable, embeddable Chat GPT based on your own documents
Hi Bea, I have been experimenting with it just now. The add multiple urls behaves strange.. Sometimes it gets the urls right, but after the first 20 pages, it changed all my https urls into..

 212);">(URL WITHOUT HTTPS)

<span
I changed the url, but it seems something goes wrong in the https:// replacement - this prevents me to add more pages after the first 20 did work - I have already reloaded a few times, and it's strange that it did work for the first 20 pages (they are from the same list / url format)

Second issue: When I enable "use only my library" I get a server error from the chat. And without that, the answer wasn't specific enough - it was literally answered in the content

PanMan··on Augmented Reality Welding System
Obviously the high dynamic range is a challenge, but besides that: car reverse camera's cost a few bucks, I don't think this would need to be Way more expensive. It also doesn't have to be stereoscopic and 2048x2048 I'd say... - it would quickly be a step up from the current solution which only allows you to see the welding arc
PanMan··on Pirate Weather: A free, open, and documented forecast API
Just my 2 cents: It's on my todo list to look for a weather provider, but the "pirate" in the name at first made me discard this: I guess the pirate bay made the word pirate something less-legal sounding, not something I'd want for a business. Happy I did open it, and no problem to work with a pirate brand, but wanted to notice it might be negative branding. Personally I quite like the Bright Ground name joke (and I don't think it will cause legal troubles, but IANAL).
PanMan··on Developing a new app is unreasonable condition that Apple imposes on dating apps
As long as they keep the 27% fee, I don't see any apps switching, also if they don't have to build a second app.
PanMan··on Launch HN: Sieve (YC W22) – Pluggable APIs for Video Search
Like the concept, but especially for live feeds, seems expensive? at $3456/month/camera ? Is this not your use-case (it's the first one on your use-cases page)? Or am I missing something? Congrats on the launch!
PanMan··on Use deep fake tech to say stuff with your favorite characters
Not bad, but it seems to ignore newlines in the input. I pasted in newlines in the famous Pulp Fiction quote: https://fakeyou.com/tts/result/TR:d1yw37dftm42ayt34h17scy1n8...
PanMan··on UUIDs Are Popular, but Bad for Performance
I liked the article, but would also expect a version with an auto_increment integer ID, and an indexed UUID field. The ID can be used 'internally' - for joins and indexes, the UUID as external ID. Best of both worlds?
PanMan··on I assume I’m below average (2010)
When I was a student (so I thought I was smart), I got to pick up a bunch of desks at a moving company. How hard could that be... The (older) gentleman working at the moving company saw us struggle for a few minutes, then asked us to move aside, and he was WAY more efficient at packing the truck with desks, than we were... Was a nice lesson that experience can beat a lot of "smarts".
PanMan··on Show HN: Humans vs AI – A/B testing GPT-3
I'm not sure I would catch this in a human written paper: The result is the same: One group splits into two. Who splits from whom is then semantics, right?
PanMan··on New ‘Meow’ attack has deleted almost 4k unsecured databases
Most SAAS db providers provide their database over the internet, but secured with a login/pass. Eg all DB's on Heroku elements marketplace work like this.
PanMan··on Booting embedded Linux in 0.37 seconds on an ARMv7-A CPU at 528 MHz
But that makes sense, right? 0,1 Amps = 2,4 amps/day, many cars have a ~60 Ah battery, so that would be empty in 25 days (and probably in less than that doesn't have enough power to start the engine).
PanMan··on Apple adds 192-room hotel to plans of Northwest Austin campus
I work for a small hotel chain, and have often joked about the tech stack if apple would run a hotel (with no legacy)... Time to see how it will actually look! (Although I guess they'll outsource the management to a hotel chain)
