Paianni··on Ask HN: What's your process for reselling your used hardware?
Even for motor vehicles?
Paianni··on Nokia to add open interfaces to its telecom equipment
Yep, MeeGo Harmattan was the original plan for replacing Symbian. Probably could have made it but they would have needed a partner (HP/Palm?).
Paianni··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
Surprised no one has mentioned the systems that, if opted out of, redirect users to a 'privacy policy' page and won't allow access to content without opting in.

Or the sites that don't bother with compliance and just show a message to the effect of 'this site operates under a jurisdiction that may have different privacy laws to your country' and leaves it at that.

Paianni··on Ask HN: Is Edge any better or worse than Chrome on privacy?
Wouldn't the EFF's extensions and uBlock Origin serve that purpose anyway?
Paianni··on Linux Sucks 2020 [video]
Because they are two separate operating systems.
Paianni··on If it ain't broke: Share your oldest working gadgets
It was never really anything more than a hobby and its now stored away as a sentimental value piece. When I was younger I regretted losing the serial cable for it and ruining a Dell tower that would have allowed me to sync it to a PC, this was back when I couldn't freely just buy stuff off eBay and space in the house was at a premium. I had a penchant for poking the original box with the stylus so that got tossed eventually.

A couple years ago I got an HP 2133 netbook and although the chipsets have a habit of frying themselves every once in a while (forcing the purchase of new motherboards) the form factor is close enough that it can take over the functions than the old WinCE handhelds and Psions had.

I like the 'robustness' of a lot of tech product designs from the early 2000s and prior. Plastic parts in particular seem to have become rather thin in the years since.

I have an Ericsson MC16 (rebadged HP 360LX) WinCE device from 1998. Was given it circa. 2003 when I was five/six. Despite abusing it for years, it still works today.
Paianni··on Windows Privacy Dashboard: GUI for Windows 10 Privacy Settings
Xfce doesn't represent all DE's and WM's. Chances are that statement came from a single dev anyway.
Paianni··on We Chat, They Watch
It took them forty years to deliver the democracy the 1947 constitution provisioned.
Paianni··on Ask HN: How do you manage self-study?
Finding something enjoyable that also earns a living is not easy for everyone.
Paianni··on LibreOffice ReleaseNotes 7.0
They've always gone .0 to .4 and then bumped the integer up, since 4.x.
Paianni··on An Android 8.0-9.0 Bluetooth Zero-Click RCE
It's all dependant on Linus' version being maintained.
Paianni··on An Android 8.0-9.0 Bluetooth Zero-Click RCE
Basically they could maintain the Android environment but it wouldn't mean much because the system's still not safe, and won't be unless the device gets a new kernel + rebuilt drivers.
Paianni··on An Android 8.0-9.0 Bluetooth Zero-Click RCE
The Pixel 1's kernel and drivers are no longer maintained upstream.
Paianni··on Vivaldi 3.0 is out – let us know what you think
Would use an OpenBSD-current binary but I suspect that would be hard to implement as it would have to be built on and scheduled around the Chromium port.

I appreciate they replicated the old Opera Mobile UI as well.

Paianni··on Plan for 5 Years of Lockdown
Five years is not realistic. More likely is one to two years of lockdowns broken up with periods of 'relief' to allow a degree of economic recovery.

The supply chain will just disintegrate otherwise.

Paianni··on It’s Time to Build
The way cities are talked about like utilities in NA seems utterly bizarre to me.
Paianni··on Running postmarketOS on iPhone 7
I'm not a great person, I get more satisfaction from feeling like I know more than actually being critical about learning.

Not sure how to purge that psychology.

Paianni··on Running postmarketOS on iPhone 7
They predated the SoC era, as did all the late Symbian handsets.
Paianni··on The Decline of Usability
Mainly PoS machines.
Paianni··on Privacy Not Included
It could backfire, people might perceive the complexity of the content is a reflection of how dumb a company thinks its viewers are.
Paianni··on The Decline of Usability
Tiling window managers are a pain without a keyboard.
Paianni··on The Decline of Usability
GNOME MPV (now Celluloid) seems like a bad example since it's not part of the GNOME project.

GNOME Videos gets away with the same UI choice as in that app, media is opened from the lists and not the menu.

Paianni··on Gadgets That Refuse to Die
The USB ports are full-size although the power output on them is a bit low. Realforce 87/88U is TKL but has no hub.
Paianni··on Gadgets That Refuse to Die
The outgoing HHKB Pro2 might interest you if it's within your budget. It's hard to find now as it's been replaced by the HHKB Pro Classic with no USB hub.
Paianni··on Rethinking OpenBSD Security
I'd say the opposite is true, there isn't enough evangelising, not enough people are discovering and accessing projects where security is prioritised.
Paianni··on Audacious 4.0 released, switches from GTK to Qt 5
Cross-platform toolkits are the lazy way. Good quality graphical apps are available in derivatives that match the interface guidelines and optimum toolkits/APIs of their platforms.
Paianni··on Coronavirus has caused a bicycling boom in New York City
Bike paths can be false security if they are poorly designed, which 99% of them are unfortunately.
Paianni··on The future of work requires a return to apprenticeships
My last apprenticeship was four days working plus a day of college per week. My employer...had little for me to do most of the time and I was restricted from finding things to get involved in outside our office (about 15 people). The structure of the department and the difference in qualification meant I had no one to work or learn with on a continuous basis.

At the end of the two-year contract there were no positions available for me so I moved on.

Paianni··on Google redraws the borders on maps depending on who’s looking
Borders should be drawn based on the states that control them. So oddities like Transnistria would be shown, even opposing sides in civil wars.
