PLenz··on Bill Ackman: The gov't has about 48h to fix a-soon-to-be-irreversible mistake
Let me sum this up for you, "Privatize the profits and socialize the costs"
PLenz··on Bank run on Silicon Valley Bank
A lost folks in general (and SV in particular) operate on the principle of "got mine f you". They're comfortable so now we don't need to do anything to make anyone else so. It's a symptom of the greater issue of a lack of empathy.
PLenz··on Deep learning for twelve hour precipitation forecasts
Weather prediction is the realm of relatively well understood differential equations based on physical properties. Where deep learning can play is in inference of what's going on between observations on the map and timeline.
PLenz··on Is remote work bad for the economy?
No, but it is bad for some rent seeking players with loud voices.
PLenz··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
We're well into the cargo cult layoffs. CEOs need to look good to their bosses and your job is a sacrafice they are willing to make. I'm sure there are some who will make their decisions based on real data and analysis - but they'll make thier decisions independently of other firms actions. Seeing all this clustered behavior suggests little analysis is really being done here.
PLenz··on Writing a Vector Tileserver for Osm2streets
It's come to mean interactive maps web maps, usually tiled image based. This is still a very specific thing in GIS where most published maps are still static documents - and often meant for printing on large format printers in the ALEC world.
PLenz··on NYC officials say they can't find EV garbage trucks powerful enough to plow snow
Manhattan used to have hundreds of miles of street level trolley - but mostly powered by underground center third rail because overhead wires just didn't work with the density of lines and equipment. When the system needed to be cleared after snowfalls they used horses and later ICE trucks to plow. See any book on the Third Avenue Railway system for details
PLenz··on Death to the death of poetry (2001)
Poetey is bigger then ever. We just call it pop music. Certain types of poetry are much less popular but that's because they don't have product-market fit.
PLenz··on SBF Arrested by Bahamian Authorities
He was being followed. The minute he boarded a boat the USCG would be enroute with a cutter to intradict and perform a thorough safety inspection in international waters, perfectly in line with their law enforement and maritime safety duties.
PLenz··on 1955 Union Pacific EMD E9 – The Last of the Classic Diesel Streamliners (2012)
The Fl9 came just a little bit later and ran in regular commuter service into the 2000s
PLenz··on As Carvana crashes, used car dealers, not buyers, stand to win big
The GM streetcar conspiracy basically gave dealerships to already politically connected individuals in return for killing off streetcars - the payoff being that the busses that replaced (poorly, hence encouraging private car ownership) would be bought via the dealerships. Car dealership owners are often car dealership owners because of adjacency to power, not the reverse.
PLenz··on World Cup Daily, Day 25
Most companies aren't big corps and tend to care about employees if only because there are fewer of them.
PLenz··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
About half of U.S. truckers own thier own rigs, europe has fewer owner-operators. Do you want to start by throwing out half the domestic market?
PLenz··on Ask HN: Why are slides used in talks instead of document scrolling?
It's a trust thing - the more trust the less it needs to be a meeting. Unfortunately most companies and client relationships are low trust and need facetime to build towards that high trust environment.
PLenz··on Ask HN: Why are slides used in talks instead of document scrolling?
You've made a key mistake. Slides are made of text and images but use the narrative language of TV and movies. Storytelling (and all slide decks are stories) using the tropes of written language results in terrible powepoints, the timing is all off. Whenever you find yourself in a situation where you have a deck that needs to be a doc you've found yourself in a meeting thay could have been an email.
PLenz··on Ask HN: In mid 40s. What non-tech job can I do?
If you have a ability to not work for a few months I would look at the Volunteer in Parks program with National Park Service.
PLenz··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
Next headline: Lufthansasa installs faraday cages in all their cargo holds
PLenz··on Vectors are over, hashes are the future
Hashes are just short, constrained membership vectors
PLenz··on Does Someone Know My Name?
As the agency that administers copywrite in the US, they can in fact do pretty much what they want to on the subject.
PLenz··on The Next Silicon Valley Will Be in the US Heartland: Steve Case
Tech jobs != Silicon Valley The jobs may come (_may_), but they won't be the same jobs you get in the valley. They will be the backroom, grunt jobs that companies want to make cheaper - cost centers. Profit centers will stay on the coasts.
PLenz··on Senior engineers are living in the future
The difference between 10 years of experience and 1 year of experience 10 times
PLenz··on All about QBasic and QuickBasic
I learned to code in isolation on QB back in the day - having interactive help right in the IDE was amazing in my pre-internet days. Later on I found the quickbasic version that let you compile executable (it may have been VB 1.0 IIRC) and from there on to FreeBasic (a qb compatible front end for GCC) and, well, here I am, doing this for a living from this.

I owe the great arc of my life to that program.

PLenz··on Shimano Forces Hammerhead to Remove All Di2 Related Functionality From Karoo
The correct number of bikes or bike thingies is always n+1
PLenz··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
Musk hates public transit
PLenz··on The end of big data
Big data didn't lose. It became so common that now what was once big data is just data.
PLenz··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
If a company has a terrible interview process it's probably a terrible company. Don't work for those companies.
PLenz··on The pop and rock greats who love model railways
The deals do exists - but at in person train shows and not online. But I overall agree with you and I see the increase in costs as coming along with the end of shake the box kits and the beginning of premade everything. A case of a market that mortgaged it's future for the a quick buck today.

That said, I think, model railroading will survive and return to it's roots of small basement and garage makers thanks to 3d printing.

PLenz··on S2: Computational geometry and spatial indexing on the sphere
I would probably use h3 for this which each polygon being reduced to a list of hex ids.
PLenz··on S2: Computational geometry and spatial indexing on the sphere
Depends on where the land is and size and shape of the polygons are
PLenz··on S2: Computational geometry and spatial indexing on the sphere
As a geographer turned DS it is my duty to remind CS people that all geo methods are compromises. No system, s2, h3, mgrs, even lat lon are perfect for every project and you must think carefully about what you are doing and pick your geo representation based on your givens and druthers.
