Rubyist, ex-noder, and hardcore polyglot. Stuck in the Central Valley; somebody please save me.

PLejeck··on TextTeaser – An automatic summarization algorithm
From a quick test, it seems to treat almost every bit of content on a page equally, even elements which are clearly smaller and next to an image.

Might I recommend taking CSS styles into account? Large text is usually headlines, <strong> text is usually important, and darker greys generally suggest a side comment. Would be much easier if everybody used <aside> and <h1> but even in 2013 that's too high an expectation.

PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
Anger is necessary, but rage is never good. Rage only leads to self-destruction and scope accretion.

Of course, in some places, rage is the only way to outdo the powers-that-be. But once you've outdone them, you must switch gears.

PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
I'm saying that the fact that, from his perspective (and somewhat from hers, self-deprecation has awful effects), she had lower standing than he did, probably helped fuel this. Even if it wasn't her gender that caused it, but her youth.

It's hard to not be ageist, but in this case I think there was some of that "she's half my age so why is she higher ranking than me" involved.

But you're definitely right that there's not much evidence here. I can still make assumptions no matter how much of an ass they make me.

PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
Progress in equality benefits everybody, no matter how much people try to claim otherwise. Diversity is an amazingly good thing.
PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
In all seriousness, it sounds a lot like he was just trying to get some leverage in negotiations. Claim you've got a better option and pretend to bail, then they come begging you (partially since you led them on so far that bailing so late would put them in a tough place) and you can get a higher salary and better position.
PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
It's often quite easy to attach beliefs to events in the past.
PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
Perhaps not intentional sexism, but I'd say this is very real. Though I think she might want a new coach who isn't going to jump to conclusions.
PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
I had the same thing happen! The expected action of a down arrow on a text-oriented site is scrolling, not "next." Betrayal of expectations is not a good UX.
PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
I think the article was not calling them out, so much as calling out the environment that caused her to be unable to lead.

Hopefully we don't get people trying to make it into something it's not (a vendetta)

PLejeck··on Why I Now Believe the Glass Ceiling Is Real
This is, by far, the most level-headed article on sexism in business and technology that I've ever read. The fight for equality didn't fail, we just haven't finished it yet. But the fight from here doesn't require anger or protests like it did in past decades. Now it requires leadership, and we need to switch gears.

As for anger, I'll be directing mine at the Wall Street Journal for making it so I couldn't scroll with arrow keys: I almost gave up reading (and I'm glad I didn't)

PLejeck··on Two-factor Authentication
Loving the app, get that logo in there fast!
PLejeck··on Warning: Google Authenticator upgrade loses all accounts
I'm just gonna point out that the previous update was somewhere around 2 years ago, and it's just now getting retina, so we should be glad there's even this much.
PLejeck··on Warning: Google Authenticator upgrade loses all accounts
Luckily I was still logged into all my accounts (my Dropbox account suddenly dropped from Google's app like a week ago)

Duo seems to be quite nice, I doubt I'll end up using the backup codes.

Incidentally, GitHub has it right - "download a text file of your backup codes" is much easier than "print this page nad hope you don't lose it"; I find find(1) outpaces my frantic drawer-emptying.

PLejeck··on Warning: Google Authenticator upgrade loses all accounts
This is not at all true. Both are generating your tokens clientside with no internet connection. Try disabling internet access, it should work.

As for the mobile number, I didn't have to type that into Duo Mobile when I installed?

PLejeck··on Warning: Google Authenticator upgrade loses all accounts
I actually just switched to Duo Mobile earlier today because of iOS 7 issues with Authenticator; this just cements my decision to switch.

Edit: oddly iOS 7 hasn't autoinstalled this yet.

PLejeck··on WebM for Internet Explorer
How old is this project? That's the old download page from Google, and the old YouTube design. And an old version of Windows.
PLejeck··on In many ways PHP is just now starting to come into its own
While it's certainly true that PHP is better than it was 7 years ago, that is primarily in the ecosystem and not the language.

The language remains as bad as it was 7 years ago, and they seem to be woefully unwilling to actually fix it.

PLejeck··on Show HN: my weekend project - Bookmarks made serviceable
Interesting idea, but I find that spatial systems are problematic for people like myself who end up falling behind on their organizing.

Personally, I use a tagging model because it's easy and quick enough to catch back up.

PLejeck··on How to solve the problem that the topmost comments get all upvotes
I always assumed that the best solution was the votes / age one, at least as a starting point.

Adding average karma is certainly an interesting system as somebody else mentioned.

Nice summary, but there's also QUEUE/YOU somewhere in there.

I think _why is watching us as we watch him.

The first three files had spool dates

   SPOOL/TEST 2012-12-09T14:12Z
   SPOOL/IDEAS 2012-12-13T23:26Z
   SPOOL/NOTES 2012-12-19T00:28Z
The latest?

   SPOOL/DESOLEE 2012-01-06T08:21Z
I suspect this may have been around for a month, while he waited for somebody to notice it. Then, when we noticed, he swapped in the new one.

Also, according to the converted DESOLEE (http://www.scribd.com/doc/119155590/DESOLEE) file, something's happening on April 18, "from like four o clock to lets say twelve"

Edit: Apparently there was also a SPOOL/YOU

No idea the timestamp on that one, but it seemed to be just before SPOOL/DESOLEE

PLejeck··on _why's site is back up
I loaded /SPOOL/DESOLEE, converted to PDF with GhostPCL

Here's the scribd: http://www.scribd.com/doc/119155590/DESOLEE

Transcriptified: This printer queue is going down for _MAINTENANCE_ but will shortly return for a day I believe it will be on the day of April the 18th from like four o clock to lets say twelve.

PLejeck··on IRecognition: I am no longer Apple's Target Market
See, my only thought at that was "Really? Ubuntu? C'mon, pick a better Linux Distro!"

As much as I love the idea behind Ubuntu, it really cannot compare to OS X (or, for development, a more nerd-centric Linux distro like Arch)
