P4u1··on We just raised $400M in Series C
This is not crazy. What's crazy is one of their favourte stories, Viver de IA [Brazil], a company that uses AI to build an AI education company.
P4u1··on The Wright brothers invented the airplane, right? Not if you're in Brazil
While airplanes are catapulted from carriers due to the limited runway length available onboard, it's worth noting that they are fully capable of taking off from standard runways. On the other hand, a glider can only be launched using a catapult or by gliding off a cliff.
P4u1··on How to become a “designer who codes” (2019)
Just, don't.
P4u1··on Web Audio Modem (2017)
Genious! Great idea man.
P4u1··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I've always imagined what would it be like to have a modern version of Atari's classic "Hero" game.
P4u1··on Chilling Effects
Isn't a global warming usually what precedes an ice age? Just saying...
P4u1··on Tuna raises $3M to address complexity of e-commerce payments in Latin America
Hi I'm Paul, CTO and co-founder at Tuna. Ask me anything you want to know about the complexity of e-commerce payments in latam.
P4u1··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
Thanks, I was wondering the exact same thing!
P4u1··on The Hair Dryer Incident (2014)
That's amazing. Before I finished reading the article I thought one solution could be to throw the hair dryer away, and just use a towel or something(not ideal but beats being miserable I guess). But taking the hair dryer with her was way better.
P4u1··on Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom
I've been using Jitsi for a while, even though my company uses GSuite. Not going into details about the corporate use since many have already, but the other day it was my daughter's birthday, being on a quarantine and all and having family in different countries, I sent a jisi link to the family groups on whatsapp so we could all sing happy birthday together, everybody got in, it went all very smoothly. Better than the usual business meeting "can you hear me, I hear you, hello" routine. Thank you Jitsi team!
P4u1··on Feds Walk into a Building and Demand Everyone's Fingerprints to Open Phones
I was going to say the same thing. Likewise for iOS. Not that I have anything to hide, but if I didn't want to comply in such a situation, I would turn my phone off, game over.
P4u1··on How botnets are created with hijacked Worpess, fake Flash downloads and Node.js
The domain hosting one of the files seemed too legit to me, so I checked and it's an actual website of a Brazilian company,http://cjccontabil.com.br/, seems whoever built the website got a WP (free I assume)theme from somewhere which happened to include this malicious file(/wp-content/themes/Hermes/main1.js). I guess folks are downloading free stuff and hosting them at their websites without inspecting the content of all files, so if you think you're safe by just making sure your system is injection-proof, think again, are you using some theme or plugin downloaded from somewhere on the web and if so have you checked every single file included?
P4u1··on Commit messages are not titles
At our company we use a svn hook with Jira, so all commit messages must contain a valid Jira issue ID which contains a detailed explanation of the commit itself. So our messages are always like: PROJ-0001 I did this. IMO does the job and is much easier for the developers.
P4u1··on Clarkson fired by BBC
totally, but another channel will take him, we just have to wait
P4u1··on WhatsApp doesn't understand the web
Don't you get it? It's a mobile app, which performs really well(hence no cloud storage I guess) and is associated with your phone, your phone is and will be the most important thing for whatsapp, the web thing is just a convenience for while you're at your laptop or desktop, like working and stuff, I find it awesome, it's a lot more productive then picking up the phone. I don't mind it requires having my phone connected to the web, it is all times, that's the point o whatsapp.
P4u1··on You’ll Always Miss Being in the Basement
I miss the excitement but not the uncertainty. We did succeed into becoming a big company with huge revenues, but most startups never leave the basement, we knew that back then, maybe it's just me not missing those times, maybe because I wasn't such a kid anymore, I was 29 at the time we got started and already had my first kid on the way(2 years before that I was working at another startup that failed big time but I really didn't care back then). I loved the work and truly believed we would make it, but it was hard work, taking time from my family, specially from being with my newborn, so yeah I'm good now with being "just an engineering manager" knowing my job is safe, my future is safe. I still work hard but it's different when you don't have to wonder about the company's future I'm sure a lot of you know what I'm talking about. I might be alone here, but I don't miss a thing.
P4u1··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
I work in a tech company and most of our men are gay, seriously. Take a look around man, it might come as a surprise for you but gays are everywhere, IT included. By the way since when is this news(for hacker news)? Did anyone here not know he's gay(honest question)?
P4u1··on A Brazilian Wunderkind Who Calms Chaos
Unfortunately little to no reaction at all, and I don't think there will be more coverage, specially after a plane crashed today carrying a presidential candidate.
P4u1··on DashGum – Free Bootstrap Admin Template
Right, not the scroll, I just read it was laggy, and it was overall laggy to me.
P4u1··on DashGum – Free Bootstrap Admin Template
I think it's just that his website is under heavy load from HN users and it doesn't seem to be using a CDN.
P4u1··on Ask HN: What are the best April Fools of 2014?
I have a good one, open issue to migrate Apache Subversion project over to the git repo: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-7524
P4u1··on Show HN: I've been making one HTML5 game per week. Here's my 10th game
kudos man, your creativity is impressive, good work.
