OuterVale··on Sober: We Ported Roblox to Linux
The name progression is fun. The original popular Roblox-on-Linux tool was built on WINE and so was named GrapeJuice. Then GrapeJuice gave way to Vinegar, which has since given way to Sober. There is also another tool named Cordial.
OuterVale··on OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News
You forget how many influential tech professionals are present here (especially those in Silicon Valley) and that Altman was president of Y Combinator for several years.
OuterVale··on Trump says US will henceforth call AI 'super intelligence'
The title I submitted it with was the title shown on the article when I submitted it, as evidenced by the URL slug. Reuters changed it at some point after I submitted it. No editorialising intended or done on my part.
OuterVale··on The worst spam emails: iLands AI agent hustle
Any evidence it is an iLands-affiliated person making those posts? My timelines have been full of people I know complaining about the emails, and they're certainly not affiliated with iLands.

Personally, I've been getting the iLands emails into my inbox too. It seems I might have entered onto the radar due to my posts being popular on Hacker News, as the message bodies reference my posts.

OuterVale··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
Keywords aren't (completely) dead (yet), unfortunately. https://bsky.app/profile/vale.rocks/post/3muylxyhg5222

OuterVale··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
The same will happen regardless in the case of content extending beyond the width of the viewport. With `initial-scale=1` it'll be a horizontal overflow, without it'll zoom out. I argue that the latter is preferable (https://vale.rocks/micros/20260908-1315) but either way should never reach users due to the usability fails and major accessibility issues.
OuterVale··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
I use them whenever I have an excuse!
OuterVale··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
Oh, that is so great to hear. Glad to provide it! While writing I was very much thinking about it from the perspective of stripping things out, rather than incorporating legacy code for legacy contexts. Really interesting to think about that line of usage.
OuterVale··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
You don't need both, but you should have the width set. From that page:

> A page fails the audit unless all of these conditions are met:

> - The document's <head> contains a <meta name="viewport"> tag.

> - The viewport meta tag contains a content attribute.

> - The content attribute's value includes the text width=.

I researched and tested this extensively the other day. `<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width">` is all you need. https://vale.rocks/micros/20260902-1350

OuterVale··on Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight (2025)
Also not to be confused with the 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John with a great soundtrack by her, Electric Light Orchestra, The Tubes, and Cliff Richard.

OuterVale··on Kumander Linux – A Linux Distro with a Windows 7 Desktop
It is Windows 7 reminiscent, but it lacks the glassy appearance of Aero which is the defining characteristic of the OS' visual identity.
OuterVale··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
In this case it is because the posting account has explicitly ticked 'Ask apps and sites not to show my account to logged-out users'. Of course, Bluesky is built upon the open AT Protocol, so you can still view the post by any one of a number of other means without requiring a complex workaround.
OuterVale··on Small, native web tricks worth remembering
They're not really 'tricks' as much of mentions of assorted features of HTML and CSS. You get to discover a similar assortment of things (with much more immediately available detail and many examples) just clicking around MDN.

OuterVale··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Hacker News has an 80 character limit for titles. The full title is 111 characters, so the submitter editorialised it to cut down the length to 77 characters.

OuterVale··on The Bit Player: My Father with Steve Zissou
To add to this, Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo's lead vocalist, composed the score for the film, as he has for many of Anderson's films.
OuterVale··on Atomic Clocks
Thanks for sharing this with me!
OuterVale··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
I've found it the case with many content management systems that they're quite rigid regarding where they'll output feeds and what they'll name those feeds. Lots of rss.xml switching to feed.xml or vice versa between platforms. Or moving to rss.xml under a /feed directory.

Not a reason not to have a redirect, but a reason that this happens.

OuterVale··on Framework discloses data breach via Metabase 0-day

OuterVale··on Framework discloses data breach via Metabase 0-day
The full email I received:

> Dear Valued Framework Customer,

> We are writing to inform you of a data breach at our business intelligence database provider Metabase that resulted in an attacker accessing customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses. Your information was in the database that was accessed in this breach. This breach did not include order or payment information.

> We have full details on the incident below. We are deeply sorry for this breach of information, and are reviewing and improving our methodology for data storage in external database vendors.

> We are also in the process of notifying the regulatory authorities in each region where relevant regulations exist. Note that while regulations in most regions do not require notification for breaches of names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses, we are sending this email to you regardless to ensure you have visibility and can take any actions needed.

> What happened?

> On August 6th, 2026 at 9am Pacific Time, Metabase notified us of a breach of their systems with the following email message:

> On Monday, August 3, we discovered that Metabase Cloud was attacked by someone utilizing an unknown (“0-day”) security vulnerability in versions 1.58 and above. We immediately blocked the endpoints used for the attack, then quickly identified and patched the vulnerability. We notified law enforcement, and we have engaged with a third party forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation.

> Your instance of Metabase was vulnerable to this 0-day. Therefore, to protect your company, we recommend you:

> Rotate the credentials for every database connected to your instance; and

> Review the admin accounts on your instance and remove anything you don't recognize.

> We also discovered that the attacker was able to gain access to your instance. We created a report on the actions we believe the attacker took on your instance, which includes log files, and which you can get from the Metabase Store at [removed url].

> (If you do not have access to the Metabase Store, are having issues accessing the report, or do not want to click on a link in an unexpected email, you can log into your instance directly and reach us at Help > Get help in the grid menu in the upper right hand corner. We'll confirm this message is from us and email you the report.)

> This report is based on our own application logs. We did not query or read the data in your connected databases.

> Depending on the jurisdictions in which you operate and kinds of data your instance connects to, you may have notification obligations under applicable laws. If you have concerns in this regard, we recommend you assess potential notification obligations with your company’s legal or compliance experts.

> We regret any inconvenience this incident may cause you, and we are here to support you. If you have questions, please reply to this email or email us at [removed email address], and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can.

> Sameer Al-Sakran

> Metabase

> We immediately investigated the logs Metabase provided to us and confirmed that our database instance was accessed by the attacker. We confirmed that the following information was accessed:

> - Full name > - Email address > - Login IPs > - Billing and shipping address information > - Country > - Address > - City > - State > - Zip code > - Phone number > - Company

> For Framework for Business customers, we are investigating whether the following information may additionally have been accessed:

> - Company > - Phone > - VAT > - EIN > - Billing Email

> No other personally identifiable information, order information, or payment information was accessed.

> Note that Metabase has additionally flagged:

> Important: This is a preliminary update based on our current knowledge.

> We are working with a third-party forensic investigation firm to understand the full nature and scope of the event.

> We are providing you this interim update in advance of completing our investigation to allow you to better understand any potential impact and secure your data.

> Our investigation is ongoing and the information shared now is preliminary.

> Please look at the application logs as well as the queries executed that are provided as separate files in the zip file for detailed activity and a potential timeline.

> We’re providing you notice of the breach in the meantime to ensure you have the earliest possible visibility. In the event Metabase notifies us of additional information that impacts you, we will send a follow-up email.

> What was done to resolve the issue?

> After we were notified of the breach by Metabase, we rotated credentials on all databases associated with our Metabase instance and confirmed that there were no changes in admin access or access to systems outside of Metabase.

> What steps have you taken to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future?

> We are evaluating the breadth and depth of data shared with business intelligence platforms, and scoping down their access to only the columns required for analysis.

OuterVale··on I am retiring from fulltime writing (& pseudonymity) to launch Guardian Angel
Of all the news I've heard of recent, this one has flipped my world upside down the most. Gwern dropping his pseudonymity isn't something I thought would happen.

I suppose we can't expect any more entries to his blackmail page: https://gwern.net/blackmail
