Our_Benefactors··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
You don’t have to be from the city to read a crime chart. What kind of absurd gatekeeping is this?
Our_Benefactors··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
Yes, flock cameras basically solved the problem with San Fran car breakins.
Our_Benefactors··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
> pre-AI taste

You pretty clearly did say this.

Our_Benefactors··on [dead]
I’m confused by the premise of this. When my AI wants to change a few lines, it changes those few lines. It doesn’t rewrite the file. This smells like snake oil.
Our_Benefactors··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
This is what’s know as “cope”. People are not being hired on the basis of how well they know how to not use AI. That is the basis of what people were hired on before AI, because no alternative existed.
Our_Benefactors··on Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production?
If you don’t use the MCP Claude will default to taking screenshots of figma designs.
Our_Benefactors··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
Because it’s not a complete or compelling experience if the systems aren’t naturally exposed and taught over time in a progressive manner. This has been a cornerstone of good game design for over 30 years.
Our_Benefactors··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
Unlike dwarf fortress, minecraft is fun and engaging from minute zero, and exposes its systems to you naturally over time. Terrible comparison.
Our_Benefactors··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
It’s the games job to create an on ramp to understanding. It’s not mine to spend 200 hours grasping every concept before I can play “the real game”, that’s just shitty game design.
Our_Benefactors··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
“Friendlier” and still one of the worst UIs available. It’s nearly impenetrable and the game has no tutorial to speak of, no on-ramps for new players, and is probably the most overrated game I’ve ever had the displeasure of playing.

I’m convinced from articles about dwarf fortress that it’s a game that few actually play and enjoy, but like talking about as if it’s fun. The promise of dwarf fortress is far more interesting than the actual gameplay.

EDIT: To people who are rebutting this by saying “it’s just not for you” - that’s entirely my point. Few people enjoy it. I am the majority opinion here.

Fun! Just wished someone a happy burn.
Our_Benefactors··on Techie lured out of retirement to support software only he remembered
“This story has a bittersweet ending, because Roger told us that as he worked on the project, he realized the income would complicate his own tax affairs”

Do they not have accountants in the UK? Seems bonkers to come out of retirement for a lucrative payday and then give it away on account of some extra paperwork.

Our_Benefactors··on I finally did it, I forked WordPress
It says right at the top of the page “Pre-release: DMPress is at 1.0.0-beta.80 and is not yet recommended for production use.”
Our_Benefactors··on RTX 2080 Ti Memory Upgrade to 22 GB
0 AED = $0
Our_Benefactors··on Apple seeks U.S. approval to buy memory chips from blacklisted CXMT
Interesting. I know corsair already uses CXMT chips in their memory products. It would be hard to believe the govt would tell Apple no in light of this.
Our_Benefactors··on RTX 2080 Ti Memory Upgrade to 22 GB
Considering the price is listed at $0, it doesn’t inspire confidence to do business with this enterprise.

The 2080ti is what, 8 years old at this point? Upgrading the RAM is throwing good money after bad.

Our_Benefactors··on Couple pay >$800k for a gene-editing therapy for their daughter. She died.
It’s been ended officially but due to social pressures to “put all your resources into one child” as the parents were accustomed to, having just one child is still a strong cultural factor. The CCP can’t just flip a switch and suddenly the whole culture aligns with having many children.
Our_Benefactors··on Which streaming service was that on again?
It really was. Hulu was seen as “the worse netflix”, was launched significantly after netflix already had a critical mass, and its launch was seen as the beginning of the end for streaming as a one stop shop.
Our_Benefactors··on TSMC eyes price hikes of up to 25% on chip production services in 2027
TSMC doesn’t really make RAM. They’re a logic foundry.
Our_Benefactors··on The creepiest 'sales demo' of all time
The GDPR is an overreach as evidenced by the OP kvetching about why a foreign country does not comply with his country’s regulations regarding cookie use.

What’s the corollary for the patriot act? AFAIK, its provisions would only affect immigration and travel, which happen inside a country’s borders.

Our_Benefactors··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded

Our_Benefactors··on My car’s OTA update broke Android Auto
> It's good that there are some companies, that ban android/apple car since that's an ugly experience for the user

Hello, Elon

Seriously this is so wrong. I love being able to carry all my preferences from my phone directly to the car without any additional configuration. Before this, we had to do stupid stuff like entering individual contacts in the cars system.

Our_Benefactors··on How to Build a Minimal ZFS NAS Without Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS (2024)
What size discs are you using? This post is kind of hilarious, 24TB is achievable in literally a 2-bay NAS nowadays.

Our_Benefactors··on If your product is Great, it doesn't need to be Good (2010)
Not a solution. Something like “shutdown after n hours of inactivity” would fix it though.

Our_Benefactors··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
They’re not equivalent devices in almost any dimension. I got a pizza at the grocery store for $6. It has no bearing on raspberry pi being a joke or not.
Our_Benefactors··on What it feels like to work with Mythos
> despite the fact that 90% of people would be able to make do with a Macbook Neo.

Myth. Total myth! I recently had to beg for more RAM after continually hitting swap space which causes tools like dictation to stop working, failure to load certain websites without rebooting, and so on. Devs do in fact need powerful machines and the ~$500-1000 an employer saves upfront in machine costs is dwarfed by productivity losses.

Giving your engineering employees new machines in a 2-year cycle that are between the middle and high end is one of the cheapest ROI decisions that a tech org can make.

Our_Benefactors··on What it feels like to work with Mythos
The only thing they’ve overtaken is arguably batteries, and even that is questionable if the quality is as good as Korean manufacturers. I think it’s more likely that the Chinese chip industry overtaking competitors will remain like nuclear fusion, forever “just 5 years away”
Our_Benefactors··on All the Ways Europe Is Ditching American Technology
They’re immune as they are not responsible for actually administering and maintaining the systems. That’s the burden of whoever runs the lab
