But you didnt finish the joke:

Then one day a new prisoner arrives.

Later that day when everybody is at their cells some other guy yells: "194". And,as usual, all people laugh.

Another one says "315". Even more laughter. Another: "873", the place is a mad house.

Emboldened and wishing to fit in, the new guy yells: "242".

Total silence. Not even a little chuckle. Embarrassed the new guy turns toward his cellmate and asks him: "What did I do wrong?,Isnt 242 a good joke?". His cellmate says: " it is indeed a good joke, it is hilarious. But you see, son, a joke is not just the story, the most important part is the way you tell it"

Ostrogodsky··on Self-improvement is embracing your messy, imperfect life
It's not (at least not to an absolute degree) but I dont know if you are aware of the shtick of this author: "All self-help books suck, except mine because I tell you to dial down any hope and be happy with your mediocrity". Big meh.
Ostrogodsky··on Self-improvement is embracing your messy, imperfect life
No. That happens since you are born, you leave the comfort of the uterus, then eventually you cannot suck more your mom's tits, a new baby comes in and you are not longer the smallest one, you have to go to kindergarten, etc, etc, all those are pretty challenging/traumatic events when adjusted by age and then the changes keep coming. By all means not all changes are bad or even difficult but constantly through life you will have plenty of them. One thing I have learned in life is that you need to control very carefully your comfort and pleasure, too little and life is miserable, too much and you become indulgent, weak willed, afraid of change and you stagnate. Most humans live in the "too comfortable" spectrum (this not only means being materially comfortable, it may mean not trying to change, playing it safe, not daring to do things), so one or two whips courtesy of life could work wonders.

Ostrogodsky··on Firefox 96
That's fantastic in theory, not so much in practice. Visual studio code crawls into a halt and the only way to "get it back" it is restarting Firefox, even if it had just one tab opened.
Ostrogodsky··on Firefox 96
I love Firefox over Chrome in almost every single aspect....except, I cannot shake the feel it still leaks memory like crazy. Open several tabs, then a couple of youtube tabs (you know how people are), eventually the machine is slow as molasses, you close 50% of the tabs (including the youtube ones) and you get back like 10% of the memory, so you need to restart the browser. That gets old, fast.

Fantastic, thanks. Streissand effect at play, I would have never checked this repository otherwise.

Meh, Stross has some interesting posts (although too verbose), I cannot stand his fiction and this post has nothing interesting to say.

Saying nobody expected the COVID 10 years ago it is like saying nobody is expecting a big quake in the west coast of the US.

Wow, that was a trip down the memory lane! haha, I have totally forgot about segfault. Poor Slashdot is not the same.
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: What defunct websites would you love to see revived?
Hey thanks for the offer, I am checking out your site and I really like what I am seeing, we are definitely on the same wavelength. I will contact you along the way if you dont mind. Sooner rather than later.

I am getting a redirect to their new site. Can you link here where are you getting the original site?
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: What defunct websites would you love to see revived?
https://neocities.org/

This is part of a book I am planning about the "other internet". Neocities pages, minimalist non JS sites, "notebook sites", in general, modern websites that try to be as far as possible from the "walled-gardened" internet which is sadly the norm now.

Ostrogodsky··on Marie Kondo and the craze for minimalism (2020)
I used to own a lot and now I have almost nothing (not by choice), and I still prefer it that way. Money, big properties, even cars bring lots of headaches and worries that I am not so sure are really compensated by the upsides. I am not trying to be edgy here, of course having money is better than starving but I am pretty sure that most people could cut their "ideally fuck you money" amount down to 20-25% and still be very happy, saving the time and miseries of trying to get the other 75%. I was there, I risked a lot trying to get that other 75%, lost almost everything and now I realize I could have perfectly retired with what I originally had, by just implementing a few POSITIVE lifestyle changes. I am not preaching here, every life is different but that has been my experience.
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: What defunct websites would you love to see revived?
Let me be petty for a minute. I was going to mention it because I really liked it but I got peeved because the owners decided to ask the IA to remove the site. I can understand the need for a refreshment and to preserve the ownership but totally removing the access of an archived site seems petty, especially because a big part of the site consisted to links to other places. Ah, what the hell, the site was called The Modern Word, but you wont find it anywhere now.
Ostrogodsky··on James Webb is fully deployed
Yeah, I think that will depend on the scientific quality of the observations provided by JWST:

- Hubble/COBE level. Refuel it!

- LHC level: Meh, let it rot.

Tbf it is less about the device (and the people working on it) and more about what kind of fundamental changes to our understanding of the universe is provided by its observations. BTW I am pretty bullish on that front.

Ostrogodsky··on Ultraconserved words point to deep language ancestry across Eurasia (2013)
History and society in western countries is absurdly Euro-centric, it sounds like an oxymoron but it should not be. You must be aware enough to realize what is an absolute truth and what it is just relative from your POV. The other day I had a discussion online mocking the concept that "Aboriginal Australians are so unique because they split from the Europeans first" as if they cannot say exactly the same.
Ostrogodsky··on Quit Your Job
Hahahaa, gotta grant it to the author, he has the rare talent to induce in me uncontrollable laughs with every single paragraph. The other "author" who comes to my mind now with that exquisite skill is Eliezer Yudkowsky, hell, I would pay some amount of money to watch a conversation between that pair. Not even 20 seasons of South Park would be that hilarious.
Ostrogodsky··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
Yep, bet on an unchanging human nature, keeping things from the past around, some social progress in certain areas but not as fast as you would like it and that the world of 2122 will be less alien to a 2022 person than the 2022 world to a 1922 person.
Ostrogodsky··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
So did (even to a greater effect) the doctors washing their hands. Between 1822-1922, only in Physics humanity discovered/developed, the laws of Electromagnetism, the laws of Thermodynamics and their microscopic extension: Statistical Mechanics, the special theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and the General theory of relativity.

The last 100 years have been about doing things in large quantities in a cheaper, faster way. Of course there has been great progress (the era of the PC/Internet by far the most important one) but the rate is significantly lower.
