OstiaAntica··on Obamacare Website Violates Licensing Agreement for Copyrighted Software
Perhaps a contractor is defrauding the government, submitting an open source project as their own development work?
OstiaAntica··on Obamacare Website Violates Licensing Agreement for Copyrighted Software
The feds didn't negotiate anything, the article the company sponsoring Data Tables is planning to take action against the government.
OstiaAntica··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
Actually the shooter initially pled guilty. Dept. of Justice looked at these "questions" and concluded they are junk.

OstiaAntica··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
Mandarin is not widely spoken in Hong Kong-- locals speak Cantonese and Mandarin was not taught in school while HK was under British rule.
OstiaAntica··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
Costco is more concentrated in higher wage, higher cost states on the West Coast. They'd love to extend California wage rates to Walmart's red state operations.
OstiaAntica··on Rejecting industry dogma, Costco backs calls to lift minimum wage
Society's income, or capacity to work, isn't a fixed pie.
OstiaAntica··on Robot cars on public roads? California says yes
It isn't "fear" of change, it is that political systems get captured by status quo interest groups that fight against change.
OstiaAntica··on Paid Vacation? That’s Not Cool. You Know What’s Cool? Paid, Paid Vacation.
High marginal tax rates in Europe take away the incentive to create a startup, and the governments there confiscate much more of the winnings from successful companies. That, in turn, ensures that there is little venture capital to invest in the next generation of startups.
OstiaAntica··on Short-term rentals disrupting SF housing market
This practice is part of the problem. It is bidding up the cost of apartments for locals who need a place to live.

OstiaAntica··on Tesla investor Steve Jurvetson drives off in the first Model S
Actually, Daimler-Mercedes bought 10% of Tesla a month before the U.S. government announced the loan. U.S. taxpayers are going to get the downside if the company fails but the European automaker gets the upside if it makes it. Well played.
OstiaAntica··on Tesla investor Steve Jurvetson drives off in the first Model S
Look, Tesla is billed as being greener than traditional autos but it is not. Drawing power from the grid is amazingly wasteful, and is often COAL. Trading oil for coal is not an environmental win-- Tesla's basic premise is a fraud. It reminds me of ethanol, another big government effort for the "environment" which makes things worse.

Tesla gets crony capitalist, Solyndra-type loan with the worst terms possible for taxpayers: http://www.thecuttingedgenews.com/index.php?article=53001...

Coal is majority of the U.S. power grid: http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_energy/coalvswind/c01.html

Tesla batteries are cleaner than older versions, but they contain some Cobalt, and Lithium has many impacts and risks for humans.

OstiaAntica··on Tesla investor Steve Jurvetson drives off in the first Model S
A wealthy "investor" in a rigged game-- a company backed by half a billion dollars in taxpayer loan guarantees-- gets a new toy car. A car for which there is no market and is worse for the environment than regular cars, as it relies on toxic batteries and an inefficient power grid that is majority coal burning.
OstiaAntica··on Building Tesla
Tesla is a crony capitalist scam, they are burning though nearly half billion in guaranteed loans from the U.S. government. This car is WORSE for the environment than regular autos (inefficiently powered across the grid by coal power plants, uses toxic hazardous batteries) and there is no market here. Tesla's lobbyists and insider investors (including Mercedes) are already cashed out with the IPO. Taxpayers stand to lose their entire "investment."
OstiaAntica··on FB stock priced at $38/share on Thursday, raises $18.4 billion
GM is a ward of the U.S. Treasury, Ford never took a bailout. GM's bankrupt GMAC finance arm is another American state-run enterprise, the re-named Ally Bank.
OstiaAntica··on Hidden Epidemic: Tapeworms Living Inside People's Brains
This pathology is NOT caught from eating pork. It can come from any food prepared by someone atypically shedding eggs (most likely someone from Latin America.) In fact you are more likely to get it from eating raw salad than cooked pork.

"But sometimes tapeworms take a wrong turn. Instead of going into a pig, the eggs end up in a human. This can occur if someone shedding tapeworm eggs contaminates food that other people then eat."

OstiaAntica··on Hidden Epidemic: Tapeworms Living Inside People's Brains
Congress spends hundreds of billions bailing out banksters and auto unions, while easily solved issues like this are allowed to linger, destroying countless lives worldwide.
OstiaAntica··on Show HN: Beautiful Visualization of Agreement Groups in the US Senate
Political parties are the weakest they've been in 200 years. The driving factor in American politics are Internet-powered movements like MoveOn.org and the Tea Party...these groups are capturing the the traditional party structure, and they are highly issue-driven. Even in fundraising, the traditional party committees are outflanked by the new Super PACs.

There is more diversity of thought and action in the U.S. today than at any other time in our history.

OstiaAntica··on The third industrial revolution
Really? Car and housing prices have dropped significantly since 2008.

Food prices have dropped steadily for several hundred years (exceptions for misguided policy like the ethanol mandate, which spiked corn prices globally).

OstiaAntica··on NameCheap Overtakes Go Daddy In Google
I think US anti-trust law, and various promises that Google has made to the authorities in the past as part of M & A deals, prohibit them from crossing the line.
OstiaAntica··on Looking for constructive criticism on our Pingdom Killing Start-up
I've been a Pingdom customer for several years, with no plan to leave. Here's my perspective:

1. Our primary use of Pingdom is to show prospective clients our app uptime, as validated by a 3rd party. So Pingdom's main value for us is in marketing.

2. Because Pingdom has years of our data, we are really locked in.

3. Sub-minute monitoring is not appealing, I don't want that much load on my servers from monitoring.

4. The name Verelo does not convey what your service does.

5. I think Pingdom's $10/month price point is about right for our use-case. We'd probably drop it if they raised prices very much.

Hope this helps, good luck with your venture!

OstiaAntica··on NameCheap Overtakes Go Daddy In Google
Google is not permitted to allow the AdWord spend influence their search results.
OstiaAntica··on Preparing for civilization's collapse
Most of the folks stockpiling for the end-times are extremely well-armed and will have no problem defending themselves. There has been a related push to expand "castle" or "stand-your-ground" laws to permit the use of lethal force as well.
OstiaAntica··on Why the Clean Tech Boom Went Bust
Nearly every single American green energy program, from the 1970s to today, has failed, or is in the process of failing. Some, like massive ethanol tax subsidies and mandates, have significantly damaged the environment. Battery cars are a passing fad that are also bad for the environment-- they rely on coal-fired plants for electricity, and much of that power is wasted in transmission. And the batteries are hazardous.

The fact that DoD is a bigger waste of money is not a defense of Clean Tech.

The real solution is getting the big incentives correct-- tax pollution, and get the government out of the business of picking technology and playing venture capitalist.

OstiaAntica··on Why the Clean Tech Boom Went Bust
"Clean Tech" is a big scam...politically connected VC like Doerr ripping off U.S. taxpayers to fund crony capitalist boondoggles like Solyndra and Fisker. The VC get all the upside, and taxpayers have all the downside.

If the elites really cared about solving climate change, they would advance honest, technology-neutral policy solutions like a simple tax on carbon production. Instead, from battery cars to ethanol, Green Tech has been an excuse for a multi-billion dollar money grab.

OstiaAntica··on Defeating SOPA and PIPA Isn't Enough
Going after "money" in politics is treating a symptom. The disease is that the government is too big and has too much power. Limit the size and scope of government, and you'll reduce the influence of money in politics. One single reform-- a flat corporate tax, with no loopholes-- would eliminate half the lobbyists in Washington.
OstiaAntica··on Senator Marco Rubio drops support for PIPA
Actually, Sen. Rubio and his colleagues got played by the RIAA and MPAA. They were likely told that the "Internet" supported the bill (GoDaddy) and that the scope was limited to foreign sites. Further, incompetent and/or corrupt staff told him it was ok to support. The way it works, most tech staff on the Hill don't actually understand the technology, and also want to lobby for Big Copyright someday.

The result: "no controversy." But I think there's possible lasting damage for the RIAA and MPAA's reputation in Washington, people got burned by this bill.

OstiaAntica··on WSJ comes out for SOPA
True capitalists believe that government is a referee; government should not the bagman for losses or a source of investment funding.
