OsrsNeedsf2P··on Kalshi and Polymarket bets on clinical trials criticized as 'ghastly'
Given how much pressure there is to rig results with these markets, I see this going well.
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Moving the Microsoft Edge extensions ecosystem forward with Manifest Version 3
> With 95% of the top MV2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons store already moved to MV3

What percent of users are still dependent on extensions that use MV2? You can pry uBlock Origin from my cold, dead hands

OsrsNeedsf2P··on Muse Code and Muse Spark 1.2
I tried following this page, and it's certainly a lot more complex than what Meta is offering. Different price tiers, opt-in configurations, usage based availability.. I'll take the 10x discount for flipping a param switch over this all day long.
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Linux Desktop Market Share Surpasses 10% in North America
We developed Linux with 1st class support for our desktop app. It was extremely painful due to missing some Webview functionality that is available for both MacOS and Windows, so we're maintaining an entire 2nd branch of UI code to run CEF instead. One of our developers is 24/7 on Linux and basically just fixes Linux bugs, and even they need a couple VMs to try out random (especially old) distros and DEs to make sure it all works.

Anyways, I'm saying this because we expected ~1% Linux users, but we needed something to stand out against our competitors. I just pulled our latest data, and 7.5% of our paying users are on Linux.

OsrsNeedsf2P··on OpenAI's claimed disproof of Connes' Rigidity Conjecture is invalid [pdf]
Genuine question - this is so hard for me to follow. Not that I could follow the original disproof anyways. But how is "truth" determined when the effort required to validate is so high?
OsrsNeedsf2P··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
Great to see the Consumer Rights wiki has been picking up steam. Lots of passionate people behind the project
OsrsNeedsf2P··on YC Startup Guaranteed Job Interviews for People Getting Company Logo Tattoo
Is it messed up? Yes, yes it is. Is it also really awesome for people who like that type of culture? Absolutely.

(That said, it would be a lot cooler if it wasn't just YC companies trying to imitate Corgi..)

OsrsNeedsf2P··on Do newer coding models end up training on the AI slop generated by older models?
Yes, that's why good datasets are important. But usually the difference between model generations is architectural improvements
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
거지맵 meaning beggar is a generous translation of the word
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
I really wanted to like Keychron, but after spending 200$ on one of their high end keyboards, certain keys weren't detecting presses less than a month later. I couldn't end up fixing it so I tossed it out. Felt like a waste
OsrsNeedsf2P··on More AUR Malware
As someone who loves the AUR, I think it's days are numbered. The ROI of infecting Linux users is now there. Flathub's model is slightly better, but I think we're just gonna need more maintainers and an official repo for proprietary binaries
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Multiple Mouse Cursors in Wayland
This is actually something I've always wanted, but people told me it's dumb. I want two cursors and two keyboards, with two "focused window" panes. If Mouse A clicks Pane1, keyboard A presses should go into Pane1. I think this would be so fun for multiplayer games on the same computer for example (think two Minecraft instances running).
OsrsNeedsf2P··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
Oh something I can comment on!

A friend of mine was facing a mountain of criminal charges. Photo evidence proved the cops lied. We needed an expert testimony explaining the camera angle and why the photo explained how the cops lied.

I think we called every service qualified for providing such a testimony in Ontario, and a good portion of them across all of Canada. Some were even happy to work with us, until they found out we were testifying against the police. We ended up going international but without luck, and ended up with no expert testimony

OsrsNeedsf2P··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
If you have access to the SSD, you can just see the partitions anyway. I assume the threat model here is simply safely showing the agents "your phone"
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
I'm so done with Android and iOS. I already carry around 2 phones because neither will give me exactly what I want, maybe it's time for a 3rd running Linux..?
OsrsNeedsf2P··on 98.css
I really want to make one of my websites use this.. I just can't think of one that would fit.

Also shout out XFCE-winxp-tc, which makes your Linux look like Windows XP. Lots of people know about Chicago95, but this project is excellent for that 2004 vibe

OsrsNeedsf2P··on EU fines Google €890M for competition breaches over search and apps
I work in this space (not for Google). These fines are 100% a tax, and would be levied for any reason whatsoever
OsrsNeedsf2P··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
Younger generation get this connection out of live streaming
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Over 400 Linux CVEs published in the last 24 hours alone
Amazing how people think this means anything
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Flock Credibility Lost as It Repeatedly Lies to City Councils, Police, & Public
I spent 3 years in Korea, and that's probably where I will go back to retire after I exit. Crime there is extremely low - partially because of the cameras, but mainly because they're on top of it. They're able to spend time on every criminal, which deters anyone from breaking the law.

Contrary to SF, where I've called the police and provided evidence for an open and shut case, and the cops shrugged their shoulders. Flock cameras won't fix that.

OsrsNeedsf2P··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
We're porting our electron app to it as we speak
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Kimi Work
Gotta generate that FOMO
OsrsNeedsf2P··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
I would much rather follow these steps than spend days tinkering with a Linux distro
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
It's incredible Simon still believes pelicans on bikes aren't part of the training set, despite hundreds of them on blogs, forums, and Github. Stuff we put in our company blog shows up known by LLMs 6 months later, and we have 1000x less traffic than Simon's own website
OsrsNeedsf2P··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Just open your favorite browser MCP and ask it to beat the captcha
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Kimi K3 is ranked 3rd on artificial analysis, only 2 points behind Sol
Honestly I hate to be "that guy", but even Kimi 2.7 has been amazing for me. I have the 200$ Anthropic and OpenAI accounts, but for one of my reverse engineering projects, Kimi was doing better than both Fable and Sol in terms of progress per day. Excited to try K3 and see if it's even better
OsrsNeedsf2P··on 'We used acid to sabotage Microsoft hyperscale data centre construction'
I expect this article to top the HN page, since both people aghast and supportive of the sabotage will upvote
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Decoy Font
Is it useful? No. Does it stop AI from reading it? Also no. But is it cool? Yes, it is very cool.
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Grok Build is open source
While I'm sure most of them will die, there will certainly be 1 or 2 that the community rallies behind
OsrsNeedsf2P··on Why I Left Google DeepMind
I don't hold it against people for only caring about one or two issues. In addition to many plausible explanations, people like OP who take a stand are already doing so much.
