OrvalWintermute··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Throughout history we’ve been able to retell stories, to copy content, to create shallow clones or synthesis

It is only now in human history that we are able to create nearly perfect copies, and we’ve been taxed incredibly for this with overpriced everything.

OrvalWintermute··on Top Pentagon Official Contracted Personal Lawyer to Handle Minerals Deal
There is nothing illegal about using a contractor lawyer for both commercial work and your own business provided you get it reviewed by Ethics & Govt General Counsel. As this was done then I see no issue in it.

There is a potential COI mentioned below, for which Feinberg agreed to donate the profits to charity, if such a settlement happens. The guy is from a Whiteshoe law firm anyways, the allocated funds are tiny, and this seems pretty above board.

Much ado about nothing!

> In a statement to the Prospect, the Department of Defense wrote that the arrangement was aboveboard. “OSC [DOD’s Office of Strategic Capital, which leads the Pentagon’s rare earths investments] maintains a rigorous, multi-layered ethics framework that includes a detailed screening process and operates in full compliance with all federal ethics laws and regulations,” the statement said. The DOD did not comment on whether Waldenberg is involved in other Pentagon activities, or specify its ethics protocols. Waldenberg’s firm, according to the federal government’s public contracting database, has a contract with the DOD worth $1.5 million that runs through August 31, 2026.

> The DOD has said that “any profit [Feinberg] may receive from a potential Ligado settlement will go to a charity to support America’s veterans,” though a spokesperson declined to say which charity would receive the prospective donation. The Capitol Forum recently reported that Ligado is hoping to receive $5 billion from the feds, citing sources familiar with the case. That would surpass the federal government’s 2010 $3.4 billion settlement with Native American tribes, compensating them for the centuries-old confiscation of tribal lands.

The earth is both gaining mass and losing mass at the same time

We are losing gases and energy (hydrogen, helium, radioactive decay)

Concurrently, we are aggregating cosmic dust, micrometeorites, meteoroids, and the occasional larger body

OrvalWintermute··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
I’m happy to see our metrics being improved because much of the economic policy seems to have been based around what was good for boomers.

Not what was good for young people who, for the most part, can’t afford to live in houses and these days are getting ripped off with overly expensive apartments too, so they never have a chance to buy a house and build equity.

OrvalWintermute··on The Anti-Palantir Manifesto
no one is going to conflate a Palantir FDE with an actual pipehitter

Contractors doing IT support aren't "Operators" in the tactical sense, nor agents in the LE sense, nor Officers in the IC sense, nor a Boeing/Lockheed/Leidos/etc type developing weapons.

This is just a new method to scapegoat a company

OrvalWintermute··on The Anti-Palantir Manifesto
The same could be said about Oracle though, that they received the benfits of early investment by the CIA.

However scary Oracle license auditors are though, no one conflates them with the CIA.

We're now in an era where people are actively trying to compare a contractor doing some type of IT support, to a company.

OrvalWintermute··on The Anti-Palantir Manifesto
I think this manifesto conflates Palantir with:

The CIA

The NSA

JSOC

The US Armed Forces

Weapons Contractors

Law Enforcement

Federal Counter-Intelligence

Various dictatorships

Criminal Enterprises

OrvalWintermute··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Seems to be intentionally defamatory

From the Wikipedia article on the Orebro party

“ Split from the left

The initiative to found the Örebro Party was taken in early 2014 by Markus Allard, who is also the first party leader. Allard had previously held positions as substitute member of the Örebro municipal council and district chairman of the Young Left in Örebro; in December 2013 he was expelled from the Left Party and its youth wing Young Left for "liking" the Revolutionary Front, a militant revolutionary socialist and anti-fascist organization, on Facebook and refusing to disavow it when questioned.[6] Allard has stated that the real reason for his expulsion was that he was perceived as a threat to the established party bureaucracy.[7][8]

While Allard has described himself as a Communist,[9] and a Marxist,[8][10] at its founding in March 2014 he defined the Örebro Party as "broad left".[9] At that time the party considered itself a "local party that wants to carry on the labour movement's ideals", and "not interested in administrating the current society".[11]”

OrvalWintermute··on Apple unveils new accessibility features
I want to echo the comments that you just made.

One of my primary methods of interacting with an iPhone is through speech and the state of Apple speech transcription is pretty horrible. It bothers me greatly.

I know some of the workarounds and things but it does feel like it’s in the Stone ages.

I don’t think it’s a microphone issue since iPhone microphones are fairly decent and I don’t think it’s a CPU issue either because Apple Silicon seems to be some of the best on the market. Which leaves us with the software…

Maybe they should put that cash hoard to good use and buy up some of these transcription companies or license their IP so we get truly high-quality transcription.
