OrangeMonkey··on The Social Recession: By the Numbers
We arn't friends - at best everyone here are strangers attending a conference where there are 4-5 competing views and barely concealed contempt.

That said, you f'ing matter and you deserve to be friends with people. You can do it too. Just get out, talk to people in the real world, whatever just do something different from what you are doing now.

I'm rooting for you man.

OrangeMonkey··on 27 years ago, Hoover offered free international flights with any £100 purchase
Most "sales promotions" in the 90's were little more than fraud.

Most of us remember the period where almost everything in computer stores were "free after rebate." "Emachine 1997 model FREE AFTER REBATE", "Pack of 50 CDR FREE AFTER REBATE".

The rebate involved you filling out a form with the original proof of purchase, sending it off, and either never hearing from them again or having it denied. "Sorry, wrong receipt, send us the real one" but it was already gone.

Now, I assume anything with a rebate is fraud. The insight from this article is that we were right.

OrangeMonkey··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
Noone is out to get you. The world is not trying to "FUD" their way to your own demise.

Its just... noone wants to hear people hawking their pedo pesos constantly and how "WEB3 (powered by pedo pesos) will help us all!".

Its tiring. I'm over it. Most of us are. We wish you no ill will or harm, heck most of us hope you all wake up, but in the meantime we don't want to hear it.

OrangeMonkey··on Colleges that ditched admission tests find it harder to fairly choose students
Thats not exactly how pendulums swing.

Think about how far we have swung in one direction. Its going the same distance in the other. May god help us.

OrangeMonkey··on The U.S. Just Lost 26 Years' Worth of Progress on Life Expectancy
I think your skepticism here is good and smart. I had the same. Anyone who relies only on self-reported issues has the ability to have general axienty increases cause 'covid associated' behaviors.

That said, neurological covers more than just self-reported concerns like this. Take a look at this paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02001-z

You can ignore a lot of these (and I do) as they are self reported, but some are not. Consider Cerebrovascular disorders or some of the others.

There appears to be an association that is non-subjected non-self-reported between people who got covid and people who did not. The study makes NO statement that can be attributed to people who got covid with/without the vax because the study was started/concluded prior to the vax being in general circulation amongst a high number of the population.

So yes, I think "long covid" has a large amount of general anxiety - but not this much. I think its likely we will find this is 1/2 our brains just making up symptoms and 1/2 actual legit f'ing scary problems. I hope I'm wrong. This study implies I'm not.

Cheers.

OrangeMonkey··on The U.S. Just Lost 26 Years' Worth of Progress on Life Expectancy
You know thats how study analysis in life science studies work don't you?

Check out hazard ratio - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazard_ratio - it covers the increase in likelyhood above base case. You seem to be implying it doesnt matter because the absolute number is low. Thats not how life science studies work. If this causes a 10k% increase in your hair turning orange, even if it affects a low number of people, its still a drastic increase in hazard ratio.

OrangeMonkey··on GitHub Copilot investigation
That makes it easier, at least, in the US.

P2P platforms and those who violate copyright are routinely shut down (or attempt to be shut down) in the US. If co-pilot sits in that same space, it seems the books been written already... we know how it ends.

OrangeMonkey··on GitHub Copilot investigation
I disagree with your statement about ai being an independent behavior.

Suppose we add a button to a visual studio plugin called 'Copy me a function' and when you click it, it 100% grabs some random code from github and plops it as-is into your code base.

I don't have to argue the ethics of if the button is 'thinking for itself'

OrangeMonkey··on Leak: Two-Thirds of New Amazon Employees Leave Within 90 Days
I don't think your attitude is necessarily a wrong one, I think you are misunderstanding Amazon.

The place is a literal cult. In every meeting, no matter how short, you hear people argue not points but leadership principles. "We need to learn and be curious about this ! Lets dive deep!", "Sorry, no, we need to have a bias for action. We've learned enough, lets do this.", two way door / one way door.

You can think you are going to jump into the cats mouth and steal some cheese, but theres a chance that you get changed into a literal cult member by this organization.

Avoid at all costs.

OrangeMonkey··on Germany extends lifetime of all 3 remaining nuclear plants
Good.

Germany was facing a cold winter, without energy for heating, and the potential for rolling blackouts. With this change, it does not eliminate the threat but makes it less likely.

Who in their right mind would decom any type of energy that could help stave off pain for their citizenship - especially one that has no carbon footprint.

OrangeMonkey··on Germany extends lifetime of all 3 remaining nuclear plants
Mark Nelson, from Radiant Energy Group, thinks otherwise.

https://twitter.com/energybants/status/1582050941682954240

quote:

> For all those commenting "only until April 2023":

> No utility will decommission a nuclear plant knowing this kind of reversal is possible even with Greens still in government occupying key posts.

> They will not even mothball the plants. They'll just sit and wait for elections.

OrangeMonkey··on Kanye West is buying Parler
To those who espouse the idea that comments should be filtered for the greater good, I say 'You first.'

There was a time period when the left was for free speech and the right was wanting to constrain it. Maybe its just a giant pendulum - there is no right/left difference when it comes to free speech - everyone wants to censor / filter the speech of the opposite side.

If things come in cycles, then I expect the right to take over more and more (see the european shift) and then for them to slowly become in favor of censorship. Maybe then - if we are lucky - the left will remember that censorship is always the enemy even if it helps them currently.

OrangeMonkey··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
Or, alternatively, if this is actually legal.

Congress holds the powers of the purse and this is an executive order by a president a few weeks away from midterm elections. This is going to be litigated.

OrangeMonkey··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
What is your stance on "canceling" mortgage and credit card debt?

Like college debt, it was taken on willingly and its hard to argue that consumers having more money to spend won't drive economic growth.

OrangeMonkey··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
The government isnt providing assistance.

This is transferring debt people willingly took on to get a college degree, to people who did not go to college.

Look, I am not trying to be rude and I am trying to be gentle when I ask this: Where do you think the 'assistance' the government is going to provide comes from?

OrangeMonkey··on Sweden’s incoming cabinet says new nuclear reactors will be built
There exists a group of folks who claim nuclear isn't green and is going to 'kill the planet'.

The alternative to nuclear is to either use fuels with a massive carbon footprint, or introduce a level of energy suffering on the population that is beyond the pale.

You are exactly right - this is the only way.

OrangeMonkey··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
You must have assumed I was against it - I am not sure why.

I am just pointing out that there is no forgiveness, the education expenses incurred by college graduates is now being paid by blue collar workers, and its the most regressive tax we have ever had. That doesn't mean I am against it.

I just want folks to know that the person paying your college off is a guy who wishes he could have gone to college.

OrangeMonkey··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
There is no such thing as forgiveness for loans - its always paid by someone.

This is, in essence, transferring the debt from people who graduated college to people who - on average - did not go to college. The most regressive invisible tax hike we have ever had but sure. . . yay.

OrangeMonkey··on We built voice modulation to mask gender in technical interviews (2016)
You are publicly bragging about using sexism as part of your hiring criteria. You are adding points to women, or inversely taking away points from men, by pure nature of them being men or women. You are then hiring based on that.

You understand that if your information got out, its likely to result in you being unemployable right?

"I don't get it. Why are they confessing?" "They arn't confessing, they are bragging."

OrangeMonkey··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
I think your statement is the issue.

If you have two equally qualified candidates - one anglo saxan male from boston, and one african american female from georgia - at many places, one is going to be consistently chosen.

I agree - that is absolutely bias based on protected characteristics. Do you?

OrangeMonkey··on Show HN: GhostLabel – Start your own coffee product line
What is up with the 'custom coffee brands' that seem to be pushed nonstop the last 6 months?

It seems like every youtuber that I watch now has their own coffee brand that they ask you to buy. Heck - a vtuber rabbit was pushing their coffee brand too. Did I just miss the memo?

OrangeMonkey··on A streamer broke her back in two places after jumping in a foam pit at TwitchCon
A human falling is a lot of energy. Energy has to go somewhere.

Either the foam will compress, or it won't compress and the energy will 'dissipate' in the human body.

In this case, we had foam that appeared non-compressable with sharp points that hit on the back. This feels like a level of stupid that it takes an MBA to come up with.

OrangeMonkey··on Virtual Society, Blockchains, and the Metaverse
... yet another case where 'the blockchain' can help us solve the world ...

Who in the world believes this utter tripe.

"In many ways, the challenges M² aims to address — how to get a bunch of disparate users to agree on a shared notion of temporality — is also a core challenge that blockchains solve for." - oh come on.

OrangeMonkey··on A streamer broke her back in two places after jumping in a foam pit at TwitchCon
That "foam pit" looks crazy to me. Sharp angled firm blocks that do not appear to have much give (see the video linked from @rurban).

This feels like a case where having this 'foam pit' may be more dangerous than not having anything. Something like bike helmets positively correlated with more dangerous behavior / more accidents.

OrangeMonkey··on Show HN: Nomad, a no fee Airbnb competitor. Any investors here?
I like people who start companies. It shows a level of drive/passion that I think makes the world a better place. So thanks!

In this particular case, airbnb is having issues as people are starting to run away from them. Having a pitch that is 'basically airbnb but we dont charge money' during a macro-event where companies are trying to focus less on growth and more on maximizing cash flow... this is going to be a hard sell. I wish you luck, but the response you will get today may be very different than 2 years ago.

OrangeMonkey··on The Lost Civilization of Dial-Up Bulletin Board Systems
BBS's are a pretty big nostalgia trap for me.

I spent my childhood using an old 8088 dialing up boards / exploring our local areas bbs scene. Hell, I met my wife on a BBS originally - we were chatting later at a party and it came up and we realized we had spoken a few times before.

The BBS period reminds me of freedom, exploration, and a time when everything wasnt monetized by ultra corps. Its that memory that worries me. I sometimes wish I could go back to that time but you can never swim in the same river twice. Its moved on. We need to also.

Its a trap. One I fall into every once in a while.

OrangeMonkey··on Mastodon.technology Shutdown
I am sad that they are shutting down but we have more options in the Fediverse still.

Its the rebirth of the promise of a censorship free internet. A lot of people have decided that its time we shut peoples mouths and stop them from talking 'for the greater good' - this is a pushback against it.

One day we will all remember why we should support free speech - god help us on that day.

OrangeMonkey··on Theater of Shame – The rise of online humiliation
I think you are arguing against something I didn't state - or maybe you replied to the wrong comment. My statement, backed by papers, is that puberty blockers given to older children and younger teens has a negative impact on fertility that needs to be known.

I make literally no statement on what is worst (trans suicides are a thing, and infertility is a thing also). Its a tough place for parents to be to help their children.

What does not help anyone - including yourself - is making up statements that you then get hot and yell about. If you scream about dog whistles / terfs / transphobes it has the impact of shutting down conversation.

Lets be better and lets trust the science.

OrangeMonkey··on Theater of Shame – The rise of online humiliation
Regarding puberty blockers, I think the impact is a bit stronger than you have been made aware of.

From Nature - affects fertility in both boys and girls treated in early adolescence: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41585-020-0372-2

From Lancet - importance of informed fertility counseling for trans young people: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4...

While some may claim the resulting infertility condition that impacts young people given puberty blockers is the price worth being paid due to trans suicide rates, it is worth stating: it is not benign and it is not reversible.

The treatment side effects are permanent and are life altering for most people. Imagine a person finding out at 26 that they are infertile - it is a life impacting event that causes mental anguish, divorce in some cases, and even suicide.

Lets trust the science here.

OrangeMonkey··on I spent $3k on a Samsung Smart TV and all I got were ads and unwanted content
Bought a samsung and a roku tv. I don't know which one it was - but, for one of them, I refused to install internet. And it had a red light that flashed like every 30-60 seconds. I looked up why? "Its the no internet" light and it couldnt be disabled.

I had to cover it up with a sticky note on my nice tv until I finally gave up.

Anti consumer patterns.
