OptCohTomo··on Why do AI chatbots have such a hard time admitting 'I don't know'?
Dunning-Kruger effect.
OptCohTomo··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
A little off topic, but on the subject of E-Ink, here is an analysis of a Kindle display with optical coherence tomography images: https://arxiv.org/abs/1605.05174

"Optical teardown of a Kindle Paperwhite display by OCT": https://arxiv.org/abs/1605.05174 OCT = Optical Coherence Tomography This paper shows what is going on inside the display.

Where does the data come from for this? The Gaia satellite database?
OptCohTomo··on I also hacked my car
A little off-topic, but https://www.scanmytesla.com/ is a great automotive hack. Here is some data I collected with it: https://bartev.org/ and some data from a drag race with my Model 3: https://bartev.org/tesla-drag-race/

On a similar subject: Reverse engineering of a Kindle e-Ink display. https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1605/1605.05174.pdf
OptCohTomo··on E-ink is so Retropunk
E-ink is a fascinating display technology. Here is an account of a non-destructive “teardown” of an E-ink display by optical coherence tomography (OCT): https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1605/1605.05174.pdf
OptCohTomo··on John Carmack on shorter work weeks (2016)
Here's what Richard Hamming has to say on the subject:

https://www.cs.virginia.edu/~robins/YouAndYourResearch.html

"Knowledge and productivity are like compound interest. Given two people of approximately the same ability and one person who works ten percent more than the other, the latter will more than twice outproduce the former. The more you know, the more you learn; the more you learn, the more you can do; the more you can do, the more the opportunity - it is very much like compound interest."

The payoff of working more is not linear.

OptCohTomo··on Researchers treat depression by reversing brain signals traveling the wrong way
That is what depression felt like to me as well. I’ve written a book about it, Can’t Be Trusted. It is a memoir about engineering, mental health, and aviation. Here is more information about me and my book: https://cantbetrusted.org/?page_id=262 As a laser engineer with an interest in computing, I think this book would be of interest to the tech community.
OptCohTomo··on Tesla Model 3 performance data
Experiments with my Model 3 using the "scan my tesla" cellphone application to capture performance data.

OptCohTomo··on How are mentally ill pilots kept out of the air?
How are mentally ill pilots kept out of the air? My book, Can’t Be Trusted, provides one example in answer to that question.

It is a memoir about engineering, aviation, and mental health. I provide details of my upbringing and accomplishments in life to try to persuade readers that I do not have schizophrenia as claimed by the FAA. It is a book where engineering is a grand endeavor and the nerds are the heroes. It is also about aeromedicine and psychiatry. Computer scientists, engineers, physicists, and psychiatrists might be interested in such a read.

The interchanges with the aeromedical authorities and a concurring opinion written on the Yale University letterhead are printed in an appendix. One issue was the free mixing of pre- and post-DSM-III terminology without ever acknowledging the existence of the DSM. Yale defended the practice.

The details of my mental health history are covered frankly in the book. I do not claim a perfect record and some people I know feel I should not be flying. Readers can decide for themselves. I am not an emotional cripple. I am happily married with two adult children and I am a successful laser engineer with a Ph.D. from MIT.

More information is contained at the link, including a 10-minute video introduction to the book.
