OnlineCourage··on Operations for Effective CEOs
Sounds like something Adam Nuemann would say.
OnlineCourage··on The size of the moon, relative to the Australian mainland
I think you mean Australias diameter is roughly equal to Moons radius. Which is wrong by 10%, Simple Australias radius = 0.4(Moon Radius). Remember maps have projections and Australia is uneven. Unless you are counting part of the ocean as Australia.
OnlineCourage··on Ask HN: Why do so many startups claim machine learning is their long game?
Because rule based software is now a commodity, and therefore has lower margin. ML is more risky to achieve, may not work on a given dataset, and requires scarce specialized thinking, therefore is worth betting capital on. ML is the new stock while software is the new bond.
OnlineCourage··on The lean startup is not for creating radically new products and markets
The Lean Startup was never written to help startups, it was written to bolster Eric Ries's enterprise consulting.
OnlineCourage··on Elon Musk will go to trial over “pedo guy” tweets, judge rules
Elon Musk is a horrible person. People who don't see this are blinded by money.
OnlineCourage··on Early-Career Setbacks Can Set You Up for Success
So not being a billionaire is failure? Wow.
OnlineCourage··on Early-Career Setbacks Can Set You Up for Success
Failure is not a binary 1 or 0 thing. There are at least 256 levels. If your failure was down to 193 in the first decade of your career, you may be better off over three decades than soneone who was consistently at 240 in the first decade and later went down to 170 in the second decade, because you may have greater information exposure, it all depends on what happened.

Also...please define failure?

OnlineCourage··on Early-Career Setbacks Can Set You Up for Success
"If everything did not go perfect at the start, you're hosed for good." Sounds like a real winning mentality.
OnlineCourage··on Andrew Yang Is Full of It
> live off grid and grow organic crops

Great idea! I will start right after we have millions of people doing this and not starving.

OnlineCourage··on Why Are Mountains So High? Mysterious Anomaly Exposes Limits of Theory
Probably not correct since the earth is pear shaped not spherical, and the size of mountains are quite small relative to the earth's curvature. However from the article erosion of mountains seems to be impacted by water, limiting height, so on a smaller similar planet by material and water composition it would stand to reason that force of water given the same mass would be less so perhaps mountains would erode more slowly relative to continental drift and therefore be higher.
OnlineCourage··on An erroneous paper on religion and generosity is retracted
Those sciences not developed at Edinburgh are not developed by a true scottsman, either.

OnlineCourage··on Amazon Is a Monopoly
I have actually started adopting other online vendors because Amazon's quality control and customer support is so atrocious. I think Amazon will end up digging its own grave by building this huge adoption for online buyong, training competition how to do online retail right, and then die from a million cuts as thousands of specialty vendors step in. Their search sucks too...you just get fed paid advertisements for crap. AWS is amazing but I no longer trust Amazon as a place to buy physical items.
OnlineCourage··on Another death on trail to 'Magic Bus' from Into The Wild won't stop adventurers
I like how your proposed alert notification is in capitalized letters and post hoc. "DUE TO RECENT LEGISLATION RESTRICTIONS ON CELL TOWER PERMITS IN WILDLIFE AREAS, AT&T HAS DETECTED THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER WITHIN OUR PLATINUM CELL TOWER COVERAGE AREA. YOU ARE NOW IN THE IMPENDING DEATH NO EMERGENCY SERVICE ZONE, GOODBYE."
OnlineCourage··on The Invention of Money

OnlineCourage··on Trump proposes forcing hospitals to disclose discount rates with insurers
> surgeon scorecards while we're at it.

Yelp reviews for cardiologists, I can see it now: "Well, I'm still alive, so that's a plus, but he told me very rudly to cut down on salt! One star!"

OnlineCourage··on The Golden Girls Would Violate Zoning Laws
1) Let's let the number of street parking spots in a city be equal to 10. Currently your new duplex would keep that number 10, assuming 2 cars per household. Under your plan, that would reduce the number of street parking spots to 8, assuming the same number of cars per household. Of course now that the law has been changed, more people want to build duplexes, to take advantage of thier property. 4 more duplexes are built in the city. Now you have zero street parking spaces remaining. So where do new vehicle owners park? They have to pay. So your new rule has transferred what was previously a public expense to a private expense. Basically upping expenses on vehicles for others is ownership infringement. It would be similar if someone built a factory next to your house which used up 99% of the water in the city and then said..."how am I infringing on water usage? I paid for it." Well, yes but no one else can use water now, or you have upped the cost of water for the neighborhood.

2) People often use cars to generate income through being able to drive to work.

> housands of sightings that continue to occur every year across the USA.

Amazingly not a single one by people with phones to take pictures with. Huh.

OnlineCourage··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
I actually stumbled upon a dead bear in Wisconsin a month ago, invalidating your thesis. I have pictures.
OnlineCourage··on California law banning bots from pretending to be real people without disclosure
> Precedent is foundational to western law.

No, precedent is foundational to common law, not western law as a whole. There are two main forms of western law.

OnlineCourage··on One reason for the high cost of housing in California is overregulation
Absolutely not. Some regions have different weather, flood and earthquake liklihood than others.
OnlineCourage··on The ‘cliff effect’: Getting poorer while working harder
Those numbers hide important truths underneath. Cheap housing in China does not meet health and safety standards available in the US, so Chinese are "paying" more in the form of risk. Likewise with food - not sure I agree with your statistic at all, as food can be incredibly cheap in China, but not safe. Developed countries are incredibly rich, if you take into account what is available in terms of basic public services and quality. You may not be able to afford restaurant food in Iceland, for example, but you can be confident that you wont be robbed.
OnlineCourage··on Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019
Please read the above comment thread so you don't end up taking things out of context. The original comment claimed there is no functioning government. Your new claim seems to be that even though the government is functioning, it is not because of bribery and corruption.
OnlineCourage··on Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019
What is a "swath"? What is "just cartels?" Are cartels providing road and highway construction? Are cartels operating the national healthcare service? Do they do water permitting? Collect taxes? Regulate commerce? Look at my passport when I enter the country? No - none of the above. Your claim is false. They influence parts of the government, not substitute it. You are describing a place more like soithern Somalia.
OnlineCourage··on Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019
Cartels do not only sell drugs, they are systems of diversified private security corporations and paramilitary groups which have emerged out of the previous iterations of violence and loss of governmental order which was a symptom of national narcotrafficking disputes in the previous decade. Basically a large portion of the Mexican Government effectively is infiltrated by cartels which also function with public support, hence the mudering of journalists and politicians...cant have people speak out and show that cartels are bad now can we?

If you had a time machine and could boycott drugs in the 1980s then it would have had an impact...now not as much.

OnlineCourage··on Kickstarter Senior Staffers Are Pushing Back Against Colleagues' Union Efforts
Kickstarter could probably benefit from more slowness and processes. There have been loads of scams on that platform. Unionized workforces can either help or hinder a particular company's business model for a particular duration, you are making wide sweeping generalizations across all businesses. You are also "West Coastal" signaling as though everything on the West Coast is a Utopia while the Midwest is backward, which...what is the Midwest anyway? Which states constitute the Midwest and why are we to assume that invalidates companies there, are there zero successful companies in the midwest with unions? You also mention police being mostly white attributable to unions only...what is the connection there?
