OnionBlender··on Spending on AI Is Becoming Almost Impossible for Businesses to Budget
What doe striking gold here mean? What "speculative explorations" are you having the agents do?
OnionBlender··on Solving Factorio Quality
This is why I got bored of Dyson Sphere Program. Once you travel to other solar systems, all you get are resources that let you skip certain production chains. The proliferator spray then made direct insertion inefficient.

The planets in Factorio have new buildings, new mechanics, and certain resources are cheap while others are more scarce.

OnionBlender··on Ask HN: How can I browse HN in dark mode?
https://hcker.news has multiple dark mode themes.
OnionBlender··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
Were these take home assignments or live coding? It sounds weird to interview someone just to watching them use an AI agent.
OnionBlender··on Deus Ex creator Warren Spector is retiring from game development
Spector has acknowledged that. Reminds me of this funny opening line.

> "There's a tendency among the press to attribute the creation of a game to a single person," says Warren Spector, creator of Thief and Deus Ex.

There's a kickstarter for "MemoMind One". Glasses with display and no camera.

OnionBlender··on Severance
I know this is a joke, but this is why my coworkers and I were muted during the meeting we were laid off.

I received a meeting invite the night before for 9am with two HR people and some middle manager above me that I never met. It was obvious what the meeting was going to be.

OnionBlender··on Ask HN: Another "Hacker News" with less AI and more human-focused hacking news?
Did you enable to filter? Here is a link with AI excluded.

OnionBlender··on Ask HN: Another "Hacker News" with less AI and more human-focused hacking news?
https://hcker.news has an optional AI filter. I don't know how accurate it is.
OnionBlender··on Factorio 2.1 Experimental Release
My main gripe was fixed in this patch. Planting and harvesting with the agricultural tower can now be controlled with separate conditions. So now there is a better way to avoid wasting so much fruit and therefore, reduce spore pollution.
OnionBlender··on The 'papers, please' era of the internet will decimate your privacy
How is hitting the library an act of rebellious defiance? Getting a library card requires an ID and proof of address. The library then tracks which books you've signed out. Unless you're reading the books inside the library without signing them out.
OnionBlender··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
If you haven't already, you should read John Romero's autobiography "Doom Guy: Life in First Person". There are some details from "Masters of Doom" that Romero disputes.
OnionBlender··on It is an amazing time for programmers
This is my life. I drive to the office 5 days per week to sit in a tiny windowless room. I have meetings with Europe in the morning and meetings with India in the evening. The rare time I need to talk to someone in the US, they are in a different building so we talk through Teams.
OnionBlender··on I am retiring from tech to live offline
What niche market? I work for a hardware company writing C++ code and my company literally has a dashboard for managers that shows employee's token usage. My manager warned me that my low usage will reflect poorly on me during performance reviews later this year.

OnionBlender··on Microsoft Drops Claude Code After Budget Overrun
I had thought about creating something like that for finding comments for articles. For a given article, display links to comments for HN, lobsters, reddit, etc. However, I feel I already waste too much time reading comments. I shouldn't make it easier and more tempting.

OnionBlender··on Ask HN: Is anyone seriously considering a career change?
Go back to school for what though?

I'm 43 and I've been thinking I might just retire if I get laid off and can't find something new. I'm frugal and have enough saved up that I could make it work if I leave my high cost of living area.

I'm not worried about engineering jobs being eliminated. I'm more worried that companies are going to expect insane velocity because of these tools and I'm not going to be able to keep up in part because I care about quality. At my company, the people that use AI to generate the most code seem to get the most recognition.

OnionBlender··on Zed 1.0
I found it funny when an American customer support person I was talking to over the phone had no idea what "zed" meant. I was reciting some code and they asked, "what is zed"? I said, "uh, the last letter of the alphabet".
OnionBlender··on There's yet another study about how bad AI is for our brains
How are they measuring it? My boss gave me a hard time because I wasn't using enough of my token budget. How do they know what percentage of your pull request was AI written?
OnionBlender··on "The new Copilot app for Windows 11 is really just Microsoft Edge"
I'm forced to use Copilot at work. I can't resize the font size and there is usually a delay when typing in it for the first time. In Outlook, it often opens the side panel on its own.
OnionBlender··on Swift 6.3
It is a markdown thing. It removes the "copy" button from the code block when the markdown is rendered. Search for "nocopy" on this page.

OnionBlender··on Silicon Valley's "Pronatalists" Killed WFH. The Strait of Hormuz Brought It Back
When I worked at BlackBerry, it pissed me off when CEO John Chen sent out an email telling employees that they need to be fully focused on their BlackBerry job. Meanwhile, he was on the board of directors of Disney and Wells Fargo while BlackBerry was failing badly.

OnionBlender··on We might have been slower to abandon StackOverflow if it wasn't a toxic hellhole
The Android filesystem APIs are a perfect example of this. The old answers no longer work because Google keeps restricting what apps can do. If you're lucky, someone might post a comment or a new (non-accepted) answer.
OnionBlender··on Engineers: Stop trying to win other people's game
I assume they thought the person on top of the mountain is a man instead of the same woman with her hair tied back.
