OnWriting··on Notability app shifts to a subscription model
This completely goes against Apple's guidelines 3.1.2(a):

If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for. For example, let customers who have already purchased a “full game unlock” continue to access the full game after you introduce a subscription model for new customers.

I wonder if there will be any repercussions. I doubt it.

OnWriting··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
My entire Meet call just got dropped and can no longer connect. Lots of 502's.

The good news is that it happened on a Friday -- see you all next week!

OnWriting··on PayPal is currently blocking all transactions containing the word “tardigrade”
Anyone care to guess as to why? At face value it seems like a very odd word to censor, I have absolutely no clue what the motivation might be.
OnWriting··on Read Fewer Books

  > ...answer to the question of why we read, there is only one response that will ever be encompassing and ambitious enough: we read in order to know everything
Anecdotally, there's a large amount of people who will read a book wholly for the purpose of being able to say they've read it. Whether it's a sense of elitism, vanity or bits of both -- it's strikingly obvious when you ask deeper questions about a book and they can only respond with basic one sentences you could infer from the synopsis.

I believe the above has been amplified due to the false dichotomy of information technology vs good ol' books.

OnWriting··on Toggl Track
I'm genuinely surprised they went with a pink/purple/light brown colour scheme, and didn't present any alternatives.

It seems very strange not to have selectable colour schemes - even a light/dark mode equivalent of their chosen palette would do wonders. Is this not standard now?

OnWriting··on Gmail and Google Drive Outage
My email drafts can't even save. A popup saying "Oops, something went wrong. Recent changes may not have been saved."

No images either!

OnWriting··on Gmail and Google Drive Outage
Gmail is practically unusable at the moment. It's been going on for a while too, so I'm interested in the post mortem for this.

I'm in Sydney, Australia.

OnWriting··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I'm in a similar situation where I'm in Australia, but I work with many colleagues in the UK. This means late night meetings and work commitments that fall outside of the usual 9-5.

How do you stop it from going 9-9? Block out times in the middle of the day for leisure?
