That's great that whoever makes your device(assuming Apple) has stores where they can do repairs. Having a repairable device doesn't mean you have to repair it yourself, it just means you can.

Quick aside: This should have a (2020) tag.

The keyboard and mousepad on my Thinkpad have died twice. I've replaced it twice for 30 dollars each time. I would have had to buy a new laptop if I had something else. The conclusion about this being a hack and not a new economic model is why I'm hoping Framework seems success. Unfortunately I think my Thinkpad is on the way out for good and I plan to replace it with the Framework 16 when it is available, which I hope will last me just as long as my Thinkpad

You not reading the thread is problematic. Meta is pledging 3 years of engineer time not money.

This is what I'm referring to for the most part. There are other things like Disney+ carrying pro wrestling in other countries like Indonesia.

Disney+ is a different animal in countries that aren't the US.

I enjoy them. It's a paragraph or so of easily digestible information. Not everyone has read something like Atomic Habits so the value is relative. Worst case scenario it acts as an excuse to kick off discussion.

Why is it geographically infeasible to expand bus service in a city? Most medium to large US cities are designed with a grid system which would fit more buses perfectly. My city recently expanded one of the main roads to 6 lanes when they could easily done a BRT instead.

The amount of hoop jumping people go through to avoid saying we should invest more in public transit is insane. You see it on HN every time someone mentions density or transit. No one is saying you can't have a car or should live in a downtown apartment, we just shouldn't build everything around having a car.

The idea behind the phrase is that cops are either bastards or they sit by and let other cops be bastards and are themselves bastards. Any cop who doesn't sit by and let other cops abuse citizens isn't a cop for very long.

When you find out let me know. Almost 10 years in and I don't know what I'm doing most the time.

Didn't know this extension existed, thank you. I don't actually subscribe to any Youtube channels and mainly search for what I want at the time but this may be a healthier way to use Youtube.

I use the extension BlockTube to filter out videos by channel and I think it works pretty well since I only need to right click on a video and can block the entire channel. That means you have to trust another extension.

That being said, it is an understatement to say I can't tolerate the internet without uBlock Origin. I get so much value out of this project I would donate 10-20% of my salary to the project if they allowed donations.

Can you create a category just for Delta Chat messages? I've never used Delta Chat but in Gmail you can create categories and tabs so I would be able to create a category just for Delta Chat messages. Is there some sort of thing like that in Thunderbird or whatever email provider you use?

I think you're equating teacher with lecturer because of how classes are taught in school. They are not the same thing. A teacher can just be someone that gives you feedback and corrects you when you make missteps. If I recall correctly, this way of teaching is the idea behind Montessori schools.

You can learn most things on your own and be "fine." But having a teacher accelerates your rate of learning beyond that.

Everyone learns better with a teacher because no matter how you think you learn best, getting feedback from someone who actually knows what they are talking about is required.

The artist you enjoy might not be but the streaming service you use to listen to them absolutely is.

Everything plays into attention economics and thinking otherwise is naive. Video games are optimized for play time and content, video streaming services try to keep you watching for as long as possible, music streaming services want you listening all day.

Not the person you are responding to but I also believe Power of Habit is better than Atomic Habits.

I wouldn't trust most tech workers to pick roses let alone pick government policy.

"Original value Canadians" sounds like a dog whistle to me but ignoring that, I grew up in a melting pot city and all of the different cultures intertwining ends up creating a unique culture in itself. LA is different from NYC. Seattle is different from Toronto. All of these cities have many different types of immigrants co-mingling but none of them are the same.

> ...the cost of tracing with a SaaS vendor is also very small. Far smaller than the developer time needed to set up something else.

I'm mainly responding to this point regarding developer time outweighing the cost of just going with SaaS vendor that provides that capability. I don't think we disagree with each other though

Depends on how much you value not being vendor locked in. I'll spend a week of dev time in order to save a month or two in migration pain later down the line when my vendor jacks up cost. See Datadog as an example.

Thanks! I have an Android device so I'll start by looking at some apps I use daily.

Would love to learn more about this type of reverse engineering. Do you have any resources or tips on getting started?

What trade-off specifically?

You're right in that assumption but not because you putting words in my mouth. I said companies that don't do take-homes get lower priority during scheduling.

> ... if it’s your first time with the specified framework, build tool or CSS library.

Depending on the position they may been testing specifically to filter people out who are using a tool for the first time. If I'm hiring a Senior Flutter Developer then it better not be their first time using Flutter.

To give a different opinion, any company that doesn't do a take-home gets lower priority during my job search. My favorite interview was HR screen -> 30 minute chat with another programmer -> take-home -> final interview that included a take-home review.

I didn't end up getting the job but it was easily the best and least anxiety inducing interview I've ever been through.

Seems like it needs to be replaced every 4-5 months which is longer than my Brita which needs to be replaced every 3 months
