China has many people: a large number of tourists for Cambridge MA, but only a few percent of Chinese citizens knowing about MIT are compatible facts.

This seems to be an argument that one scheduling system is worse than the previous. However, one of the major objectives of a scheduling system is to reduce cost, which this seems to have done. What is the downside?

>> they’re Japanese so they’re good at building infrastructure

This argument strays into racism, or a circular argument. Either the Japanese are uniquely genetically capable of building public goods cheaply, or their continued success is a result of how they have structured their society.

If it isn’t genetic (how could it be?), this is an argument for emulating the uniquely Japanese cultural aspects that led to the success.

Because the services offered after getting onto the public cloud are better than the internal ones, more transparently priced, and cheaper.

And you also get some benefits: enough internal bandwidth to allow every input port to cut through at line rate, and a single buffer to prevent starvation (the tomahawk chip has 4 groups of ports, each with a separate buffer).

Also, you can run cumulus on the switch, which is pretty awesome.

I don't understand why you went back to using a scooter, if you were so clearly able to diagnose the dangers, and had one fairly severe injury. Why not switch to a commuter bike (the ~1 ft wheel foldable ones)?

Also, separate question, my understanding is that potholes are mainly formed by freeze/thaw cycles -- weather not typically found in SF. Have you lived in Chicago or NYC? Can you contrast the pothole density between those three cities?

OldManAndTheCpp··on The World, Built by China
I’m a believer in China dominance in the coming decades.

However, painting the West’s ability to heap “unequal treaties” on China cannot reasonably be described as a function of finding and conquering the new word. Firstly: the major conquest of the new world came through Spain, which had little to no involvement in the humiliation of the Middle Kingdom. Second, colonies in North America did not give the British gunboats capable of demolishing the Chinese fleets.

The reasonable conclusion is that the Enlightenment and the scientific advances eminating from that allowed the West to go from isolated, low population minor powers into worldwide empires.

The US did acknowledge this: the Marshall Plan was clearly an effort by the US to dually resore the homeland of many Americans and to bind the broken or beaten powers closely to the US.

The term “Greatest Generation” is a bit passé, but the USA immediately after WWII was legitimately great.

OldManAndTheCpp··on GM closing all operations in Oshawa, Ontario: sources
In order to show that the engines are wastefully large, you first have to show how a smaller engine provides better fuel efficiency over the 95% range, and then show how the remaining 5% is unimportant. For example, if the big engine is 5% less efficient over the power range of the little engine, but the increased max power it provides allows you to accelerate out of getting stuck in the snow, or travel at safe speeds up mountain roads, reasonable people might decide that the trade offs are acceptable.

NileRed mentions this as a shout out to AvE.

I recommend both: AvE has a fantastically interesting folksy veneer hiding deep experience (a joy to watch).

NileRed has a much more polished style, although both are working out of garages.

To see a crossover is greatly appreciated: the core dream of internet mixing and remixing remains alive!

OldManAndTheCpp··on SQLite Code of Conduct
It is not obvious that this is satire. Mr Hipp (main contributor) links his homepage at http://www.hwaci.com/drh/. From that page, he links his wife (Mrs. Wyrick): http://www.hwaci.com/ggw/index.html. She has among her interests: http://www.hwaci.com/ggw/allerton.pdf "Church Music Resources".

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread: SQLite is "Open-Source, not Open-Contribution". In that context, an openly religious CoC does not seem out of the question.
