OhHeyItsE··on Shedding light on the dark web
> From a public health perspective, Prohibition was a success.

Do you count skyrocketing murder rate and gov't-poisoned hooch in your metric for success?

OhHeyItsE··on Trump
Ah I see. While you're at it, could I trouble to explain the differences between a "Certificate of Live Birth" and a "Birth Certificate"?
OhHeyItsE··on Samsung Acquires Joyent
Can anyone shed some light (speculate, perhaps) on Samsung's strategy here? Just seems like an odd pairing to me.

> However, I created ebay feedback software by myself that’s kept me self-employed for the last four years

Commendable. But this seems to be what investors often call a "lifestyle business". Not the kind of thing that needs a team to grow.

OhHeyItsE··on Dropbox says it is cash flow positive, in no rush to IPO
What makes this newsworthy is that they are venture-backed. Investors don't get paid (generally) until there is a liquidation event.

A company that can "make a profit and stand on its own" is of no interest to a venture capitalist.

What I find amazing is that they even need to process leads this way. That is, their TAM (companies shipping over 500 containers a year) is not something that isn't already well-defined and readily available. Possibly even contained entirely within the head of an experienced salesperson in that space.
OhHeyItsE··on World’s Biggest Indoor Vertical Farm Near NYC to Use 95% Less Water
"Near NYC" :(

C'mon - throw Newark a bone already!

OhHeyItsE··on Salary Negotiation
To clarify my original comment - I was talking about in-house recruiters. Ones that have a vested interest in negotiating you down.

3rd-party recruiters? They just want you to take the first offer you get so they get paid. Tell them whatever you want.

OhHeyItsE··on Salary Negotiation
I've had multiple situations where I did answer (honestly, too - before I knew any better) the "dreaded" question up front and had the recruiter tell me: "Wow. You must work for a really great company! We can't even come close to matching that." Process ended right there, countless time saved. So, as with all things, YMMV.
OhHeyItsE··on Is Facebook eavesdropping on phone conversations?
My guess: either common wifi networks or IP addresses.
OhHeyItsE··on LinkedIn password leak
Yeah but isn't this method just a giant rainbow table whose source is crawlable web content?

>It would have been impossible to use a brute-force attack or even a combined dictionary to crack a phrase of that length. But because the phrase was contained in this Wikipedia article, it wound up in a word list that allowed Chrysannthou to crack the phrase in a matter of minutes.

OhHeyItsE··on LinkedIn password leak
Aren't cracks of this nature thwarted by salting?
OhHeyItsE··on Scala Native
Incidental? It's pretty well known that Scala was heavily influenced by Haskell. In particular, do notation (for comprehensions), pattern matching, lots of standard lib classes (ex Maybe (Option)), many of the methods in the collections library (map, fold, take, etc)

Anyway, I wasn't trying to disparage either of them (or this project). Just poking fun at the seemingly common "I want to use Haskell but I'm forced to deploy on the JVM" use case for Scala.

OhHeyItsE··on Scala Native
Otherwise known as "Haskell"?
OhHeyItsE··on After reading “Rails is yesterday’s software”, I need to reply
This kind of thinking is how you end up with 8 zillion job-securing lines of custom frameworks-within-frameworks and stuff like:

  def isTrue(x):
    if x:
      return true
    else:
      return false
Code is debt: https://blog.codinghorror.com/the-best-code-is-no-code-at-al...

Reviewing vendor libraries always a good idea, but you aren't going to make it very far as a "Senior/Lead dev" if you are constantly using someone's money to reinvent the wheel.

OhHeyItsE··on Kofi Annan on Why It's Time to Legalize Drugs
Have you considered that perhaps being fed a lifetime of propaganda has lead you to the conclusion that "drug"[1] use is somehow incompatible (if not actually assistive) to being of "sound mind, body, and spirit"?

[1] (that is, whatever we decide to lump together under that ridiculous umbrella term)

OhHeyItsE··on List of failed and over-budget custom software projects
Would have been much easier to create a list of projects that were completed within budget (assuming that's ever actually happened).
OhHeyItsE··on Leading Android scientific calculator now requires Caller ID
Don't need any of that if you have marshmallow. Can now restrict or allow perms on a per-app basis.

OhHeyItsE··on How Google killed my startup

OhHeyItsE··on Microsoft Expands Its Parental Leave, Bolsters Paid Time Off And 401k Matching
> it seems like people who choose not to have kids should receive similar benefits

This always comes up when this topic is being discussed. I don't understand what it is about the American psyche that makes us get so worked up about someone else (often in demonstrable need) receiving some sort of help.

I realize I'm stretching a bit here, but your opinion lives in the same realm as some other doozies we often hear:

"Why do women get special tech recruiting events??? Nobody set up a special event to recruit ME. I had to network all on my own"

"Why should my tax dollars pay for a transit system I don't use???"

"Why should inner city schools get subsidized lunches? I had to bring mine every day!"

This is why we can't (and don't) have nice things.
