OedipusRex··on DoorDash has filed for IPO
I have a feeling these food delivery services are going to fade into obscurity or outright die. They cost way too much already and prices are only going to increase.

OedipusRex··on Fake News Is Still Fooling Facebook’s Fact-Checking Systems
>Should be obvious that it directly interferes with the business model of the company so it's probably never going to happen.

Bingo.

Facebook started out as social media platform for humans, now every local news station, your favorite burger joint, and any "news" website on the web can have a Facebook profile convincing enough to look legit.

Instead of fixing the news on Facebook lets take the news out of Facebook.

Which is almost as impossible as "directly interferes with the business model of the company so it's probably never going to happen."

OedipusRex··on Ask HN: Curious to know if people still use IRC?
I used it up through college and then switched over to Discord/Slack for all my text based conversations outside of texting from my phone. I really do miss the IRC crowd sometimes but the people I want to talk to are on Discord or Slack now.
OedipusRex··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
I said this in another thread about Stadia, the market for Stadia is vanishingly small. The people who have high enough internet speeds that either can't or won't get a "traditional" console or PC is extremely small. Too small to signal to Google that this is worth maintaining (https://killedbygoogle.com/).

For Stadia to survive, Google needs to bring in new "gamers", because existing "gamers" already have their own in-house platforms to play on. OnLive tried streaming games a few years ago (granted, without the Google advertising budget and infrastructure) and it was too unstable to play.

On top of all this, Stadia is going to have to either pony up and pay an existing company to include Stadia players in their online servers (Steam, Epic Games, etc) or silo all the Stadia players together. The first time input lag causes you to lose a fight is the day you cancel your subscription. "Gamers" are not very forgiving.

It's a terrible idea that was built because Google can build it (as stated in article). It may live on with a cult following but I highly doubt it.

OedipusRex··on A copy of your property deed costs $3 – this SoCal firm will do it for $89
Same thing happens to website owners, I get a ton of mail with convincing enough fake bills for scam services.
OedipusRex··on Google Kills Daydream VR
This is basically the same trap they're falling for with Stadia. It's been proven that streaming games is not really worth it. OnLive failed for the same reason's Stadia will. The number of people with fast enough Internet but cannot afford a full-scale gaming machine is very small.

Will Smith is all over YouTube now, he just did a show with the SlowMoGuys. Can't help but feel like YouTube has turned into late night television.
OedipusRex··on Blizzard's Weibo Account Just Posted an Apology To China
This is in the same vein as some other complaints around China's involvement in the gaming industry. There are calls to separate Chinese players from the rest of a game's population because of rampant cheating and unsportman like conduct. PUBG is the poster child for these calls for separation. The Chinese company TenCent has invested VERY heavily in the games industry (https://www.pcgamer.com/every-game-company-that-tencent-has-...) and continues to bank roll games. Due to the nature of business between Chinese companies and the Chinese government, I don't see this problem going away.

OedipusRex··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
"We are writing to request that Facebook does not proceed with its plan to implement end-to-end encryption across its messaging services without ensuring that there is no reduction to user safety."

Isn't the entire point of E2E Encryption for user safety, as in safety from the government reading your message?

OedipusRex··on Parents Thought They Wanted Tech in Every Classroom, Now They’re Not So Sure
I work in the EdTech realm writing software to keep students on track. Technology in the classroom is a means and not and ends, it all depends on usage.

We have two "model" teachers.

The old guard teacher who started their career before computers were in classrooms, those teachers utilize our technology to accomplish a task (block websites, etc)

The other model teacher is someone who welcomes technology into the classroom, they utilize the deeper functionality of our program, and normally have more than one technology of some kind running in the classroom.

Both are great teachers, they just use our product differently.

OedipusRex··on Drinking fluoridated water during pregnancy may lower IQ in sons
In my youth I lived off a well and did not have access to fluoridated water. My parents still live in that house. There are large swaths of people who live off of a well in the United States. We started adding fluoride to water because our knowledge at the time said it was a good idea (and still probably is). The rates of tooth decay falls when fluoride is introduced in drinking water.

https://www.cdc.gov/fluoridation/pdf/natures_way.pdf

But the only places that have fluoride added to the water are metropolitan areas (at least around me in a Midwestern state).

OedipusRex··on Drinking fluoridated water during pregnancy may lower IQ in sons
There are drugs that help with specific complications that are just simply not made because the market for them is too small, they're call orphan drugs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orphan_drug). The drugs that make it to market are not necessarily the best at treating you, they just cover enough of the population (normally more than one ailment per drug) and can be profitable.

OedipusRex··on A Trump-era purge of military scientists at a legendary think tank
ARPNET didn't turn into what it is today because of military usage, and OGAS didn't fail because of it's resource management use. They lived or died because of money. The United States and Soviet Union both had to build all of the precursors and fabric that these systems would run on (telephone lines, computers, etc), which both did. The next logical step was for computers to co-opt existing national infrastructure and create a national network of computers. The Soviet Union faltering elsewhere is why OGAS didn't develop and ARPANET did.
