Oddskar··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
> I don't think it takes your full attention to listen to someone

I disagree to this with every fiber of my being. If you're multitasking doing something that requires anything beyond mechanical tasks then you're not really listening.

I challenge you to actually try and listen to a person with a completely silenced mind. It's surprisingly hard.

Oddskar··on Down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole
One can re-learn in a matter of weeks. The smaller the keyboard the less the fingers have to travel. I still have a full numpad setup with 44 keys and it’s a lot more comfortable to use than a normal keyboard.

US layout is definitely better than most EU layouts. It is still terrible compared to a custom setup however. So many bad contortions the fingers have to do compared to just having a sensible symbol-layer.

Why is it condescending to state that certain wisdom comes with age?
Oddskar··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
I think for many people NextJS or Nuxt should really be the first choice rather than going for e.g. Create-React-App or some generic boilerplate.

I guess your point is that this would change constantly, which isn't really the case.

Yarn and NPM has been around for a long time. Yarn 1 used to be the better choice since NPM stagnated, now they're a bit more equal.

Typescript has been around for a long time. So has ES6 modules. Same for Jest and Mocha.

The only thing that is changing somewhat are the bundlers and build tools (thankfully, they've been the weakest part of FE dev for a long time).

I've kept up with frontend for many years. There really isn't all that much "fatigue" if one actually understands what the tools do and the niches they fill.

> React is great until you have non-trivial state management then life starts to suck again.

I agree. This is a bit where the lack of frontend seniority tend to show it's colors in my opinion. People try to fit every use case onto e.g. Redux (or the even less competent useState) and then try to throw middleware at it to solve all of the complexity they're drowning in.

Frontend really should utilize more powerful state management tools (when necessary of course), e.g. Observables or Finite State Machines. We're using hammers to solve problems that require screwdrivers.

React is a client side framework (no, it's not a library even if they say it is), not an "app".

> And it should only be getting more performant as they put more working into optimizing it.

You say this like it's not an 8 year old framework. I wouldn't have such high hopes for it rising significantly.

I think in general it's a very tall order to compete with the documentation of Django. It's pretty much world class. I wish more projects had such good documentation.

The answers to this in 2022:

1. Doesn't matter so much as long as you're using newest versions of either one. Newest yarn has plugin support which is neat. Npm has more stable backing and an open roadmap. Could be some considerations regarding monorepo support, but otherwise either is fine.

2. Yes

3. Use ES6 modules

4. Jest + Cypress

5. Vite

I think almost all modern SPA routers took a lot of lessons from the Ember router to be fair.

I share the same opinion. While perhaps more brittle, it’s also immediately apparent

I find this PR an interesting opportunity to discuss different types of documentation.

I've internalized that there's a difference between the PR description, commit messages, and code comments. For me there's different intended audiences for all three, and their contents should thus be shaped accordingly. This PR basically combines all three into one and uses that as the commit message, and I'm not sure of what to make of it. Is this good practice?

Personally I find the contents of the "#### Summary of Changes" list to be super-neat and helpful. But should these not be more helpful as comments inside the code? On the other hand, it does explain what the code is doing at this snapshot in time: which makes it more precise than comments in the code -- since future changes might eventually make those comments incorrect.

What's your take?

Oddskar··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
Right. Which speaks to that "European city" is perhaps a bit of an overly broad concept for it to be useful.
Oddskar··on Keyboards and Open-Source
A lot of people seem to be using low profile switches nowadays actually. But you do you; everyone has their own taste. Personally I love my mechanical ergo keyboard.
Oddskar··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
Not true at all. I know plenty of people that live in nice houses and apartments in major European cities.
Oddskar··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
> (..) if you took a vacation. it was actually expected.

It goes even further than this. It’s a problem for the employer if the employer doesn’t use their vacation time.

Oddskar··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
> having a car is much easier and more convenient.

Ah, I see you didn’t live in Germany.

Oddskar··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
I’ve found Germans to be very humble and accommodating to people that try to speak the language. I would know; I’m still terrible at it. But might be different depending on city etc.
Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
Interesting anecdote. I feel like this is probably the area of boardgame that has progressed the least. In some sense the YouTube channels that do full rule explanations is a way of remedying this, sure, but that also feels quite.. odd to break out the iPad during a social gathering.
Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
Can you elaborate on the coup vs resistance thing? Sounds interesting.
Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
Maybe that's because everyone that's played any other boardgame made the last 10 years has abandoned monopoly completely since it's not a great game.

I also disagree that one cannot fix some of its many, many flaws with house rules. Remember that the spirit of the original rules was a game made as an anti-capitalist statement, not to be a fun experience.

Oddskar··on Malloy – A Better SQL, from Looker
I think they were talking about the comparison, not Coffeescript itself.
Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
The more amateur reviews I've read on BGG the less I pay attention to them, honestly.

A big difference between movies and boardgames is that it's (for the most part) a group activity. And to make matters even more inconsistent, whether a group will take to a game or not will also depend a lot on who actually teaches them the game and how that person goes about it.

Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
Speaking from experience the span of playable boardgames ratings is pretty much 65-100, I would be very sceptical of anything below that.
Oddskar··on Diving into BoardGameGeek
And you probably play using your own house rules to make it palatable: the hallmark of an at best mediocre game.

Why would a newspaper article that regurgitates the Twitter thread be any better?

If the source is Twitter then I much prefer a link to Twitter.

That is certainly a very convenient way of dismissing something you find uncomfortable.
