O____________O··on Can a city really ban cars from its streets? (2014)
It's like that always - small boats have to give way to large ones for example.

Boats traveling through fluid, controlled by a relatively tiny prop, are in no way comparable to road-going vehicles that enjoy the static friction of rubber on asphalt.

Additionally, all vehicles on the road are held to (virtually) the same legal standards, regardless of size. If anything, laws are more restrictive the larger the vehicle.

Also, this is false:

The vehicles have no priority at all, the people in them do.

There are many parts of the country where it would be illegal to cross a road on foot (jaywalking), but entirely legal to do so within a vehicle.

O____________O··on Britain's housing crisis is a human disaster
in my home of Vancouver the construction of towers has been constant for decades and prices have only skyrocketed in response.

My friends in Vancouver have told me that many of the modern buildings only have something like a 35% year-round occupancy rate, and that they're largely owned by foreigners as summer homes.

O____________O··on Doctors Perform the First Successful Penis Transplant
There's nothing wrong with voluntary, safe circumcision for the purposes of lowering HIV transmission

There is when that's a highly contested claim! And when condom use or strict monogamy overshadow it in effectiveness. The best thing you could do is invent a less annoying condom (go go Bill Gates), not slice bits off men's sex organs.

O____________O··on Ask HN: What should I do if I feel depressed in my job?
I have a family and the job pays the bills.

Sounds like you have a pretty good life!

If we spent more time appreciating the things we do have, and less time lamenting the things we don't (promotions, specific career trajectories), then we'd all find more satisfaction in life.

O____________O··on The new MacBook
Who needs to upgrade to the next device? More likely, you'll upgrade every N devices, where N depends on your personal needs.

This, incidentally, is almost certainly the purchasing behavior of the vast majority of computer owners. RAM and disk upgrades (particularly on laptops) are performed by a fairly tiny minority of consumers. Yet it seems disproportionately cited when shopping, likely due to an illusion of control or the laughable (in computing terms) myth of "future-proofing".

O____________O··on Beware the Pretty People
Why, me and my friends and colleagues, Chinese and South African and Ghanian and Kenyan are on github. I'm very offended you suggested only white people can afford to be on github.

That's not what I said. Go back and reread my comment.

You specifically mentioned "white males".

Go back and reread my comment.

You, sir, are racially biased.

You're a goddamned idiot who can't read.

O____________O··on Beware the Pretty People
There are plenty of non-white people in github.

I'd like to see how you analyzed the race of github contributors. I'd also like to know what "plenty" means. Personally, I strongly suspect that you'll see fairly small set of race/location/income combinations.

All "colours" of people have free time to create projects.

Given that we're not really talking about color, per se, I seriously hope that you don't honestly believe that statement.

O____________O··on Beware the Pretty People
objective and meritocratic nerd hiring practices (e.g. hire-by-github, death by brainteaser)

That selects for adequately privileged (generally) white males with the spare time to create projects on github and a particular interest in brain-teasers.

To my knowledge, hiring in all fields is an utter joke, with essentially zero research ever having been performed. It's entirely based on bias and guided by HR-fueled fears of lawsuits.

O____________O··on How Odd Behavior in Some Young Horses May Reveal a Cause of Autism
This reminded me of the Swedish study that noticed a correlation (they were very clear about this!) between vinyl flooring and autism in their data:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/link-between-autis...

That was way back in 2009, and I never heard anything more about it. Searching for information in later years yields an echo chamber of stupidity, so I wonder if anyone else has heard of actual research into the topic?

O____________O··on Introducing Pebble Time
Not all things are about speed.

Are you kidding me? You just wrote:

The user perceives lag after 300ms, and switches thought in less than a 1000ms. If your screen doesn't engage the user while it's making the switch, you risk them starting something else.

That was the entire premise of your prior comment. Any other points you want to hop to?

O____________O··on FCC Passes Strict Net Neutrality Regulations on 3-2 Vote
I don't know why asking for a counter-argument would get me banned

You didn't do that. You wrote snark about downvotes.

or how you know anything about being banned from HN when you've been a member for 86 days

What, you think they charge for accounts around here, or something? Why in the world would you think I haven't used other accounts before? If you made it to 600 days and haven't heard of the slow-down (whatever it's called) or hell-banning, then you haven't been paying much attention.

O____________O··on FCC Passes Strict Net Neutrality Regulations on 3-2 Vote
What we wanted wasn't for the big telecom duopoly to be forced to either run their business as a tiered service or as a regulated utility.

That's exactly what I wanted. It will lead to more consumer-facing competition.

What we wanted was ... exercise its Anti-Trust capabilities and bust the universally hated ... into a bunch of small companies

That's not at all what I wanted. It would lead to endless localized land-grabbing bureaucracy.

O____________O··on FCC Passes Strict Net Neutrality Regulations on 3-2 Vote
The Affordable Healthcare Act was ... created by morons

Really? I thought it was drafted by very clever, largely self-interested people.

I treat down-votes in the absence of a counter-argument as up-votes.

Good luck with that. Sounds like a great way to eventually find yourself banned.

O____________O··on Google announces Android for Work
Interesting video. It looks like the Chromecast can be used to mirror an Android phone's display, which might help with the HDMI vs USB connectivity trade-off.

https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6059461?hl=en

It also appears that Synergy allows you to control an Android phone using your PC mouse and keyboard (requires rooting).

http://synergyandroid.sourceforge.net/ (looks like it's in early development)

So, with a Chromecast and Synergy, it may be possible to use a spare screen and your existing keyboard/mouse setup, keeping all your personal email and browsing off your work machine. And you'd only have to plug in USB for power.

O____________O··on Introducing Pebble Time
The user perceives lag after 300ms

So write efficient, responsive software.

If your screen doesn't engage the user while it's making the switch

There are many ways to "engage the user" without wasting cycles on animation. If your software performs so slowly, why exacerbate things by burning cycles on animations?

O____________O··on Introducing Pebble Time
Yes, I misread. So now I'm not really impressed with anything about the product. ;-)
O____________O··on Introducing Pebble Time
Do you just desire UI to not be animated at all?

In general, yes.

Here are some examples: MS Word (2013? I honestly have no idea what version I have installed what with the new UI) does a horizontal page-turn animation when viewing documents. It literally makes me nauseous, and I don't see any way to turn it off without entering document edit mode. Android's Camera app now starts up, shows the control buttons (video, camera), then animates them off the screen. They're not shown long enough for you to press one unless you're gunning for it, and you can't pull them back on screen until the animation finishes. Lollipop in general has a bunch of animations which exist solely for the sake of animations. If I pull a menu out, I want to immediately start using it, not wait for the slick, deceleration of the animation to finish before I can begin interacting.

It all reminds me of Vista's Aero interface. MS saw OS X, wanted translucency and drop-shadows, and implemented it in a completely useless manner that degraded usability.

O____________O··on Introducing Pebble Time
I think animated transitions are the skeuomorphism of 2015.

Mind you, I'm technically impressed that an E-Ink display can now be animated, but I can't wait for the end of the animated UI boom.

in order to pick the "right" value of N, you have to know what value of N will maximize the greater good.

What? No. The comment said nothing whatsoever about 'N'. GP's comment was exactly this, and nothing more:

How would you even start to define a term like "the greater good" in a way that a law like this could event begin to make sense?

O____________O··on Why Rockstar Developers Don't Ask for Help
I distinctly remember the day at my first job out of college when my boss realized that I didn't know how to effectively use a debugger. He proceeded to sit down with me and demonstrate proper use of breakpoints, conditional breakpoints, etc. I didn't know how much I didn't know. There were many other interactions with coworkers along these lines. I was great at what I'd done, but had no idea how much existed outside my narrow range of experience.

For the next click-baity title, I suggest something along the lines of "Rockstar Developers Collaborate More Than They Question".

O____________O··on Your App Is Not Better than an Open Protocol
Not my problem. I'm only pointing out that the parent comment asked a question that implied a misunderstanding of GP.

Come up with analytics to support your findings

Analytics are irrelevant when you're writing some huge internal service for a company whose conservative upgrade policy dictates that only one older browser will be installed and used company-wide until God-knows-when.

By the way, glancing at a few browser market share websites, it looks like IE8 and IE9 are alive and well, totaling around the same as IE11.

O____________O··on Your App Is Not Better than an Open Protocol
He indicated that the law would limit a company to N employees. The stated goal was to benefit the greater good, but the metric was simply a number.

They probably tasked a junior programmer with working around SSL

I don't think I've seen a junior anything who was informed and insightful enough to write a network proxy, including SSL support, and the necessary certificate work.

O____________O··on My Love-Hate Relationship with Stack Overflow

Usually closed as non-constructive (I think that's S.O.'s wording).

Working on a tourist visa is illegal in most countries I've been to.

It was just discussed the other day that Thailand now allows remote work on a tourist visa. You've provided a pretty good example of why such a site would have value in disseminating information.

I don't see a point of working in a coworking space.

Uh. Okay? How is that relevant to the discussion in any way? And what makes you think that cafes would somehow be excluded from consideration? You wouldn't find value in knowing what connectivity a cafe offers before traveling there?

Everything in your final paragraph just further supports the need for sites dedicated to providing information on these topics.

O____________O··on My Love-Hate Relationship with Stack Overflow
Every time I work on a project dealing with unusual C++/Windows/COM topics, I end up hitting a high percentage of highly relevant, closed questions. The worst are the ones where I figure out the convoluted solution, but I can't answer the existing question because it's closed. So, anyone after me will suffer the same aggravation or simply give up.

The worst are the ones where some new mod has trolled through four-year-old questions closing them whenever possible. Makes me wonder how much great information has simply been deleted to give a new mod, what, a feeling of power? More history (ironically)? It's also darkly funny when a mod clearly doesn't understand the technology involved, and thus doesn't understand that it is, in fact, valid and properly worded.

I suppose it's no different than the rest of the tech community, "blogosphere", social coding sites, etc., where it's a self-promotion-centric approach that dominates. You'll get further working on the latest and greatest stack than you will solving hard problems with an older tech stack.

O____________O··on Show HN: NomadHouse – A network of houses around the world for nomads
The fact that you work online while travelling to a foreign country?

That alone represents a huge swath of possibilities. Which countries have no problem with foreign workers on tourist visas? Where are co-working locations? Who's a good, affordable tax accountant who can deal with the intricacies of money earned while outside the country? Where are the best locations for connectivity vs. price?

You'll find heavily trafficked websites for all sorts of foreign working and expat situations (e.g. retirees in Thailand, teachers in Japan), so surely the "nomadic" tech workers would have a lot to talk about.

but I'm a bit older (late 30s), I don't want to do the "hostel" thing

Assuming you haven't done much traveling, you'd be surprised at who shows up at hostels. It varies greatly by area, but it's not all the partying, early 20's kids that you might imagine.

Also, there are many things besides classic hostels that sort of fall into the hostel category. For example, I stayed in a very nice guest house in Thailand, and in a great dormitory-style apartment in Tokyo.
