O_H_E··on Memory Safe Languages in Android 13
just fyi, you can still write all the Java/Kotlin you want to stay relevant.

this post have nothing to do with writing apps for android. They are talking about developing the android system itself. They are writing new system code in Rust instead of C++. Userspace code is still enoraged to be written in Kotlin.

O_H_E··on ISO Advice from Bioinformaticians
Good job about asking about concrete pieces of advice, keep doing that and don't shy away from reaching out to people who expressed interest to help. I wasted tons of time trying to figure things out alone from the internet.

I can't directly help you but there were there 2 relevant threads recently.

O_H_E··on Show HN: A native macOS client for Apache Kafka
FWIW I don't think the macOS + Kafka (professional) userbase needs the shareware model. (I'm in neither groups)
O_H_E··on Mold linker may not switch to a source-available license
> I think you may need to enforce it once or twice to have teeth

I really don't think that is the point. This seem to be targeted at scaring legal departments to ease over the process of having corps fork over the money for something they might think could be obtained for free.

O_H_E··on Sapling: A new source control system with Git-compatible client
That is this post. Sapling.

GP was probably talking about a time when they used it internally but maybe it didn't have a name by then.

O_H_E··on Semgrep: Writing quick rules to verify ideas
>> Their docs and website try very hard to suggest you should use it for some kind of CI process...

Just a piece of feedback for the record: I have been stuck in exactly the same place the few times I was interested in trying out a ripgrep alternative that understood semantics, but didn't have such an urgent need to actually understand how to get things going.

O_H_E··on Our screwdriver took three years [video]
Just for people who didn't watch the video. They could only fit 12 bits in that they determined to be "optimal size" handle by making them half-size. But they disliked the idea of locking people into their bits, and changed the design so that a little rotation can adapt the storage area to 6 standard-sized bits.

O_H_E··on Ask HN: Recommendation for the mom of a near-college-aged “tech geared” student?
Yes!, it is a really good idea. If she is still just "inclined" and not "off-to-the-races" yet and you have a good relationship (which sounds like you do) this could be so much fun.
O_H_E··on Ask HN: Recommendation for the mom of a near-college-aged “tech geared” student?
just as another point of view from someone who was recently close to your daughter's age I generally agree with ilaksh, but I don't think this is what you are doing (or that you are taking it far[1]). It is very frustrating when one build a new thing, learn something exiting, or be really hyped about a new development in the field and not be able to share that with their parents. or them not really "getting" it and being disproportionately proud.

Hilariously, I usually had the opposite problem where I'd slap something together haphazardly by following an internet tutorial (with 0 actually understanding of what is going on) and my dad would be visibly proud and happy with the cool demo even when I tell him that I just downloaded X and copy-pasted Y and Z.

[1] unless you really want to answer the "what is the best language?" question as most of us view (Learn these top 5 X_technologies in 2022) articles as superficial bs. I see from your other comments that this might not be what you really meant. Which is fine. It is just funny seeing people triggered by it lool (I guess I also kinda was). I just wanted to elaborate that we have our own hypes, trends, and tabloid-like articles that answer questions akin to "You need to know about these top 5 hospitals in NY" or "Surgeons who use x-surgical-tool are paid the highest"

O_H_E··on Ask HN: Recommendation for the mom of a near-college-aged “tech geared” student?
Although I agree with most of the answers here, I'm gonna go against the grain a little bit and recommend a book. Not a programming book. But one that is written with the explicit intent to give an "Understanding of the Digital World. it explains how computer hardware, software, and networks work. Topics include how computers are built and how they compute; what programming is; how the Internet and web operate; and how all of these affect security, privacy, property, and other important social, political, and economic issues."

I'd suggest the second edition that was published in 2021 as it apparently adds a few sections about more recent "buzzwords/booming-industries".

Disclaimer: I have not read it my self, but I have heard that it is well written and the author Brian Kernighan is a small-celebrity in our world. I have watched a few youtube explained by him on technical topics which was very good.

Edit: heh wow actually after reading the table of content, I think I actually convinced myself to buy it for a close relative myself.

What the hell is this islamophobic crap.

Just fyi for other readers, that has nothing to do with Islam beliefs.

O_H_E··on Uncertain Future for Marginalia Search
This might be intentional on your part, but I couldn't find your Patreon linked anywhere from the blog.

This might be a good time to start linking that in obvious places.

Fwiw it was very easy to find it through Google, but ironically not through marginalia.

I hope you the best in your endeavors.

O_H_E··on 2022 Mac Studio (20-core M1 Ultra) Review

O_H_E··on It is physically impossible to exceed the weight limit for a Small Flat Rate Box
Oh wow, that linked comment is gold.

I usually cringe when people show me mainstream news titles (I attributed it to a good literature teacher who taught me to read someone's agenda and bias), but it might also be getting used to that calmed "bookish as PG said' tone here.

O_H_E··on Core i9-12900KS World Record: How I Hit 7.8 GHz on 8 Cores
If you are asking a general question about single threaded performance, then YES. Modern CPU performance is about so much more than clock speeds, and the TLDR is that there are many non-orthogonal factors that sometimes the only trustworthy quantifier is workload benchmarking.

If you're asking whether that 5Ghz is different than this 5Ghz, the main easy answer IPC (instructions per clock). Unfortunately there are no official IPC numbers, but every new release comes with vague unlabeled slides showing %increase, and then reviewres do their pinning the CPU at a specific clock and measure single-threaded performance to estimate relative IPC improvements (like this https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/core-i9-12900k-review,...)

If we go into multi-threaded workloads like compilation, then of course the new one completely throws the 8700k out of the water.

But please don't feel pressured to get on the latest and greatest bandwagon, I'm right here running around with a Thinkpad T460s (with a little bit of a need to upgrade).

_Usually_, if you are not waiting for your computer while CPU is on +90% utilization, there should be little gained from a CPU upgrade. (Workloads that depend heavily on cache size or memory latency are counter-examples)

I'm too young for what you guys are talking about, but I've always have trouble articulating how I got [sucked] into computing. It feels like I did a similar thing with HN and the internet in general.

I think osmosis is one of my new favorite ways to put it hehe.

O_H_E··on What Artists Notice
Ooooh DAMN. Interesting idea. That part that pisses me off is that I was very familiar with all the concepts that you used, but I doubt I ever came close to the conclusion.

Ok, I concur, I was probably not aware that color mixing is a human physiology thing and not a physics thing.

So to clarify, when we mix red and green playdough as kids, what happens is all the little particulates/molecules interweave together, but each is reflecting a different signal. And when that variation/entropy back-and-forth between red and green is too high, the brain just melds them to yellow?
