OOPMan··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
The difference between baseball cards and NFTs is that if I'm cold I can make a bonfire from baseball cards, whereas I certainly can't do the same with NFTs.

At this point, of you say crypto is involved with some new fad it's just a clear indicator that silicon snake oil is the real product.

OOPMan··on Simula One: an office-focused, standalone VR headset built on top of Linux
I guess I must be the odd one out, I don't find adding more screens does a ton to help my productivity, it just means more context switching.

Maybe if I needed to more stuff where I compared things side-by-side...

OOPMan··on What it's like to spend 40-50 hours in VR every week
I can't wait for the n-gate take on this...
OOPMan··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
I have never ever encountered anyone that took it as anything other than a joke.

Congratulations on your award.

OOPMan··on uBlock Origin review
I prefer Vanced YouTube
OOPMan··on Delays aren’t good enough – Apple must abandon its surveillance plans
I feel like people in the US have a warped viewpoint on this because Apple hardware is so common there.

Outside of the US, especially in poorer countries, Apple hardware is vastly less prevalent, both at universities and in general.

You folks are victims of your own financial success :-)

OOPMan··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
Modern games is a bit of a blanket statement.

There are tons of modern games (arguably the majority when you consider the size of the market) that are not skinner boxes.

If all you're looking at is AAA games and mobile crap, then sure. But there's more to games than that stuff.

OOPMan··on Psst: Fast Spotify client with native GUI, without Electron, built in Rust
You're comparing a person's side project to years of work on this in Chromium.

Seems rather like comparing someone's homemade bottle rocket to a Saturn V...

OOPMan··on A future for SQL on the web
And here I thought the most popular way to use SQL on the web was with a backend API. Shows what I know...

On a similar note, have this nagging feeling that we used to have this ability to use SQL in client-side applications. I just can't recall how?

OOPMan··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
Indeed. And, amusingly enough, most of the open standards stuff still exists too.
OOPMan··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
My profile on LinkedIn for the longest time stated "No PHP jobs please" as a way to weed out recruiters that would send me job offers for PHP roles on the basis that I once did some PHP.

I've updated the profile to include "No FAANG companies" because I'm pretty sure I would not be a good fit for them but that didn't stop their recruiters from pestering me.

OOPMan··on Papers every developer should read at least twice (2009)
Oh hey, another BBOM fan :-)
OOPMan··on Papers every developer should read at least twice (2009)
I like to recommend the Big Ball Of Mud paper.

By and large most software projects still seem to fall into the pits described in this paper.

OOPMan··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
Second that
OOPMan··on No More Movies
I struggle to understand why some random individuals realisation he's not that into movies any more is worthy of any attention at all?

Interests and tastes come and go with age.

Truly we live in the most narcissistic of times that people even feel the need to discuss something like this as if it were of any interest to any besides to author.

OOPMan··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
Brave seems strictly worse than Vivaldi to me...
OOPMan··on Poor in Tech
Expecting HN commenters not to behave like the vapid nuts they're they're mocked as on n-gate is a big ask ;-)
OOPMan··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
Are you being intentionally daft?

Or do you genuinely fail to realise thay there is a difference between you and small number of other people relative to the global population using cryptocurrency as money as compared to everyone on the planet doing so?

OOPMan··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
There is a good reason n-gate exists and endlessly mocks the HN comments
OOPMan··on Observing my cellphone switch towers
It's quite hilarious seeing the term "skilled and intelligent hacker" being used to describe HN users
OOPMan··on Scala 3.0
Let's not talk about the thing Java calls pattern matching
OOPMan··on Scala 3.0
That's an interesting take, as someone that's used Scala for a while I feel like there actually isn't that much syntax.

I guess my perception is warped :-)

OOPMan··on Show HN: I wrote my own RTS game engine in C
Why the engine internals exposed using Python 2.7 rather than Python 3?

Regardless of how you feel about Python 2 vs Python 3...one is officially EOL and the other isn't...

OOPMan··on Why I Work on Ads
People will say anything to feel like they're not doing a dirty job...
OOPMan··on Hosting SQLite databases on GitHub Pages or any static file hoster
Since it's a static database and the queries against it are most likely going to be static, just pre-run the queries and store the results statically in a more space-efficient format. When you're on a dogshit internet connection in a 3rd world country 50kb can actually be pretty unpleasant. Try rate limiting your internet to EDGE rated to see what I mean.

I'm not saying the whole thing isn't impressive, just that the concept itself is one of those "because I can" rather "because I should" things, which kinda devalues it a whole lot.

OOPMan··on Hosting SQLite databases on GitHub Pages or any static file hoster
It's impressive on one hand.

On the other it's still a lot of overhead.

OOPMan··on Programming is hard
An actual decent piece of content posted on HN for once, what is the world coming to?!
OOPMan··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Tarring
OOPMan··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Sounds like the usual post-modern rubbish to me...
OOPMan··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Most things people say that try to conflate atheism with theism are insulting, intellectually dishonest and useless
