OOPMan··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
No, if you've read the Garth Ennis run of The Punisher then you would know that cops wearing punisher shirts is completely misunderstanding the character.

Like a lot of people, you have an idea of the character which is not the definitive version of the character.

If you read the Punisher and you come away from it thinking that vigilantism, murder and so forth is good then there is probably something very wrong with you.

OOPMan··on Postgres WASM
This seems a step closer to the embeddable postgres I've wanted for ages.
OOPMan··on Mandated diversity statement drives Jonathan Haidt to quit academic society
I would like to point out that one of the important reasons South African didn't descend into a race war at the end of the apartheid was the formation of the Truth & Reconciliation Committee for precisely this reason: to forgive and reconcile.
OOPMan··on Mandated diversity statement drives Jonathan Haidt to quit academic society
As a South African it's wild to me that just over 30 years ago Mandela warned of the dangers of this way of thinking and yet here we are...
OOPMan··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
Things are always about to go nuts and yet mostly they don't seem to...
OOPMan··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
Ah yes, just what the world needs, more soul-less art
OOPMan··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Imagine trying to promote reproductive rates while censoring sexual activity...
OOPMan··on A dad took photos of his toddler for a doctor – Google flagged him as a criminal
Ah yes, a bunch of rather totalitarian societies as the model to strive for, great jumping off point.
OOPMan··on GraphQL kinda sucks
GraphQL was something I disliked on sight.
OOPMan··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
Nice way to get on HN.

Post a daft hot take.

OOPMan··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
Ah yes, functional programming is indeed so much simpler.

I'll just use a Kleisli

XD

OOPMan··on GitHub user sends notification to 400k users
Innocent or not I woke up this morning after the last one died down to see a new fake MR on the same repo.

It's trolling and childish trolling at that.

OOPMan··on Symbian Source Code
I've run into the import issue as well, it's especially painful if something imported is doing work using a slow library (e.g. a config module loading a HOCON config using pyhocon a.k.a slowasmolasseshocon)
OOPMan··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
This seems like a lot of effort for little value.
OOPMan··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
I think there is a pretty key difference which is pretty obvious.

Said obvious difference being the near real-time interactive nature of social media.

OOPMan··on Coinbase warns that bankruptcy could wipe out user funds
And yet if a hundred million people tried to use it the way you do, the whole system would implode.

A monetary system that only works if a small number of people use it is...not useful.

OOPMan··on No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me
I must confess I haven't noticed a huge difference... although that's mostly because I tend to watch from the channels I'm subbed to a not much else.
OOPMan··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
Cool technical marketing blog story bro
OOPMan··on We think this cool study we found is flawed. Help us reproduce it
This reminded me of a video I watched recently about the most common form of cheating in Magic: The Gathering: stacking the deck.

The video, by NuxTaku, did a great job of explaining how this method of randomizing the deck actually leads to a distribution which is uniform rather than random and which in turn is effectively cheating.

I haven't played MTG since the early 2000s but the video struck a chord with me because I remembered using this method and not even thinking about it (in my defence, I was a teenager) as being a problem.

So yeah, reading this article I was instantly like "er....yeah...don't ask people to make random sequences because they often have an incorrect idea of what that actually means".

OOPMan··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
Sounds more like a good way to get your product banned from a lot of workplaces.
OOPMan··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Shiny gold also has the benefit of being something you can stuff in a sock and hit clobber cryptobros with ;-)

Try that trick with some digital currency :-)

OOPMan··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Indeed. I've come across a dead letter application that has been around for ages and I'm pretty sure it doesn't use crypto.

Honestly, using crypto for something like seems a bit nuts, like using a jackhammer to destroy a cardboard box.

OOPMan··on Israel passes law denying naturalization to Palestinian spouses
As someone born and raised in South Africa that lived there until the end of 2019 I really wish people would stop comparing Israel to the old government in ZA.

The Israeli government definitely does a ton of problematic stuff that is objectively awful but it's just not quite the same as what the old government in my country used to do.

I am sure I will get downvoted for this, but the situation with Israel/Palestine is not quite the same as what existed in South Africa for a significant chunk of the 20th century. That doesn't mean it's a nice situation but really, I just would prefer it if people would stop trying to weld one shitty piece of history to another one to try and create this weird equivalency between the two.

OOPMan··on Apple M1 Ultra
Your 4k monitor?
OOPMan··on Apple M1 Ultra
That would not help. The reason proton works so well is because Linux on x86 and Windows on x86....are both on x86.

Proton on ARM Mac's would involve Rosetta and while that does a surprisingly good job of running x86 on ARM I'm not sure it's up to the job of running games at high speed...

OOPMan··on I shaved 187MB off United Airlines' 439MB iOS app
Android apps are also hideously bloated.

It's kinda disgusting really.

OOPMan··on White hat hacker awarded $2M for fixing ETH-creation bug
Did he get paid in real money or monopoly money?
OOPMan··on Discord is a black hole for information
I'm 38 and on something like 50 discord servers.

I'm only really super active on two or three of them though.

You don't need to absorb everything on every server and their are plenty of ways to control what notifications you get.

I don't think making a vague claim that it's for young people only is useful.

OOPMan··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Man...I wish I had $500k in savings.

Kinda amusing to see someone complaining about not having achieved anything despite this.
